There are numerous non-profits in free software. Some of them we know by heart, such as the Free Software Foundation. When I was reviewing the OpenZFS Foundation, I came across another foundation named Software in the Public Interest. Interesting enough the Debian Project created the Software in the Public Interest, after the Free Software Foundation stopped supporting it. This non-profit started in New York, United States of America in the year of 1997. Their mission is to overtake the non-technical, legal aspects of important projects.

Pendant que je parlais de la OpenZFS Foundation, j’ai découvert une autre fondation nommée Software in the Public Interest. C’est assez intéressant de savoir que le projet Debian a créé Software in the Public Interest après que la Free Software Foundation a terminé son support. Cette entité à but non lucratif a démarré à New York aux États-Unis d’Amérique en 1997. Leur mission est de gérer les aspects non techniques et légaux de projets importants.
There are currently 40 projects sponsored by Software in the Public Interest. Some of these projects range from games to Arch based distros. In order for a project to be sponsored, it has to be approved by the Foundation’s Board. The projects can be hardware or software in nature, as long as it follows the open source mantra. The major work stream is holding or distributing funds, holding substantial funds, holding intangible assets, signing contracts, legal assistance, and technical services. If there is a special request above their standard service, the board might review it to see how reasonable it is.
Actuellement, 40 projets sont parrainés par Software in the Public Interest. Certains de ces projets vont des jeux aux distrib. basées sur Arch. Pour qu’un projet soit parrainé, il doit être approuvé par le Conseil de la fondation. Les projets peuvent traiter du matériel ou des logiciels, du moment qu’ils sont Open Source.
Les champs de travail les plus importants sont la tenue ou la distribution de fonds, la tenue de fonds importants, la tenue d’actifs incorporels, la signature de contrats, l’aide légale et les services techniques.
Si une demande précise d’aide au-delà de leur service standard est présentée, le conseil peut l’étudier pour voir à quel point elle est raisonnable.
Membership to Software in the Public Interest offers two membership levels: contributing and non-contributing. The non-contributing members are those that live in the spirit of using free and open software. Contributing members are defined as those who actively participate in the free and open software. In other words, typically users of Linux qualify as the non-contributing members. It is interesting to see the dedicated purpose of helping software developers with the non-coding side to open software projects. I just wonder how many projects would still be operating if they utilized these services. Until next month…I still have to find a topic for next month.
Il y a deux niveaux d’appartenance à Software in the Public Interest : la participation et la non-participation. Les membres qui ne contribuent pas sont ceux qui vivent dans l’esprit de l’utilisation de logiciels gratuits et open. Les membres qui participent sont actifs dans la création de logiciels gratuits et open. En d’autres termes, les utilisateurs de Linux typiquement sont qualifiés de membres non-participants.
Il est intéressant de voir l’objectif dédié d’aider des développeurs de logiciels pour le côté non-codage des projets de logiciels Open Source. Je ne peux que me demander combien de projets seraient encore existants s’ils avaient utilisé ces services.
