-I moved to Ubuntu from Windows about seven years ago and I always regret that I did not start sooner. So, I installed Ubuntu in dual-boot beside Windows. At first, I was still dependent on Windows and frequently switched between Windows and Ubuntu since it was difficult to become adapted to the new software and environment. In other words, I created the habit of using Open Source applications in Windows, instead of moving to Linux suddenly – which might cause me to become disappointed; that’s what causes hardship for newbies – working in a new environment, and its first complex appearance.

Pour mes besoins de courrier, j'ai commencé à travailler avec Thunderbird plutôt qu'Outlook, que je trouvais très pénible. En d'autres termes, je me suis habitué à l'utilisation d'applications Open Source sous Windows au lieu de migrer vers Linux tout d'un coup. Cela aurait pu me décevoir ; ce qui est difficile pour les débutants est de travailler dans un nouvel environnement avec une apparence complexe, du moins au départ.

 After a period of working with Ubuntu, which applied Unity as their desktop, I transferred to Linux Mint with the pretty Cinnamon desktop. I tried KDE but found it too ‘fantasy’ for my activities.

-From the scientific point of view, as I work in the world of High Performance Computing (HPC), Image Processing, and Data Mining, I found the Linux very profound and attractive in these areas. My first HPC system was a combination of a real Ubuntu, installed on my laptop, and a virtual Ubuntu installed on an Oracle VirtualBox machine. Utilizing this, I could install HPC packages and test some applications which taught me HPC for the least price. For data mining applications, there is the Hadoop platform for Linux which I am also able to install on Ubuntu
+Après plusieurs mois, je me suis soudainement retrouvé à passer la journée entière, travaillant et faisant des recherches avec des logiciels qui sont disponibles aussi bien pour Windows que pour Ubuntu ; ainsi, j'étais prêt à migrer facilement vers Ubuntu sans douleur supplémentaire. Un jour est devenu une semaine, puis un mois et, finalement, je faisais toutes mes activités dans un environnement Linux. Il m'est devenu plus difficile de travailler sous Windows que sous Linux. Je n'ai pas travaillé avec Windows 8 ou 8.1 et je ne connaissais même pas leurs différences, car je me sentais pas concerné. J'ai également très peu d'expérience avec Windows 10 dont je n'ai pas un besoin critique. J'ai déjà trouvé la plateforme que je préfère.

 My whole master thesis was done in Ubuntu using MATLAB, and some some parts of it using Octave and Scilab. My thesis text also is written and edited in LibreOffice Writer. Actually, I forced myself to do my writings in LibreOffice to kill two birds with one stone: first, obviously doing my job, and second, become a master in LibreOffice writer which I appreciate very much. As my master thesis was related to image processing, the images were prepared for papers and documents using Gimp and Draw.

+D'un point de vue scientifique, car je travaille dans le monde du High Performance Computing (HPC, le calcul de haute performance), Image Processing (le traitement des images) et Data Mining (l'extraction de données), je trouvais Linux très approfondi et attrayant dans ces domaines. Mon premier système HPC était une combinaison d'un vrai Ubuntu, installé sur mon ordinateur portable, et un Ubuntu virtuel installé sur une machine VirtualBox. En utilisant cette configuration, je pouvais installer des paquets HPC et tester des applications ; j'ai ainsi appris HPC à moindre coût. Pour les applications d'extraction de données, il y a la plateforme Hadoop pour Linux qui j'ai pu installer sur Ubuntu.

 Currently, I teach courses such as Operating System (Laboratory) and Programming Languages at university, and always encourage students to use Linux as their main operating system if they want to gain a better understanding of how a computer works and what are the main concepts of a computer. They should do their assignments in Linux, and on the most convenient distro – which I think is Ubuntu or the distros that are based on it such as Mint.
-In conclusion, I think it is a good idea to move from Windows steadily and patiently towards Linux, and to use an attractive distro such as Ubuntu or Mint rather than rushing in the switching process. This approach reduces the stress of a new environment, and also makes you learn so many things about operating systems as well as several applications.

+Maintenant, pour le traitement d'images, j'utilise les bibliothèques OpenCV pour C/C++, Python et Java, le tout sur mon système d'exploitation Mint. Je pense même que leur processus d'installation est plus simple sous Linux que sous Windows.
+Actuellement, je donne des cours, comme Systèmes d'exploitation (Laboratoire) et Langages de programmation à l'université ; j'incite toujours les étudiants à utiliser Linux comme système d'exploitation principal s'ils veulent mieux comprendre le fonctionnement des ordinateurs et de leurs concepts principaux. Ils doivent faire leurs devoirs sous Linux avec la distrib. offrant la plus de commodités - je pense qu'il s'agit d'Ubuntu ou des distrib. basées dessus comme Mint.

Une autre serait d'utiliser une distrib. attrayante comme Ubuntu ou Mint, plutôt que de hâter le processus de migration. Cette approche diminue le stress dans nouvel environnement et vous apprend beaucoup de choses concernant les systèmes d'exploitations ainsi que plusieurs applications.
