 It started with Windows 3.1 – I was amazed at what I could draw (cartoons) with MS Paint. My son was 3 years old when I introduced him to computers using a custom desktop program called Kid Desk. It was a way to introduce him to working with computers, while keeping my install safe from him. Windows 3.1 used, I think, 3 diskettes, but even a video resolution change could destroy the installation. That would require me to install DOS first (6 floppies, I think).

 I waited in line for the next release, Windows XP. I had heard how much better this OS was over ME. I used XP until Vista came out, and yes, I was Microsoft blind and bought that for around $250. It was horrible! All my old programs failed to run, and I was forced to buy another version of MS Office at around $400. This was SERIOUS money.

+J'ai fini par acheté Windows 98 et ce système d'exploitation m'a ébloui. Comparé à Windows 95, c'était tout bonnement élégant. J'ai gardé Windows 98, en sautant la version SE. La mise à niveau suivante était vers Windows ME, pour lequel j'ai payé à nouveau à peu près 200 $. Le rendu des icônes était meilleur, mais je ne me souviens pas d'autres différences, alors il n'y en avait sans doute pas.

J'utilisais Windows 7 jusqu'au jour où j'ai décidé que j'avais dépensé assez de cash pour des produits de Microsoft. J'avais entendu parler de Linux avant, mais j'en avais abandonné l'idée, car je pensais que je ne connaissais pas assez l'informatique pour l'utiliser. Un ami a mentionné Ubuntu. Il m'a montré son ordinateur portable et ça m'a intrigué. Comme moi, il n'était pas un crack d'informatique et il utilisait ce beau système d'exploitation !

 I made the jump to Ubuntu on my main machine with Karmic Koala – that was the only CD I had. I later upgraded (fresh install) of Lucid Lynx (2010) , and have never looked back since.
-I am currently on release 16.04, Xenial Xerus. I look forward to many more years with Linux, specifically Ubuntu. I am disappointed with the discontinuation of support for 32-bit systems. Perhaps I will buy a new PC when this LTS runs out of support. But for now, Long Live Linux! Long Live Ubuntu!

+J'avais entendu dire que Windows 8 arrivait et je n'étais pas certain de vouloir obtenir la mise à niveau.
+J'ai laissé Windows 7 sur ma machine principale et j'ai téléchargé et exécuté Puppy Linux sur mon portable. Lors d'une visite chez mon père, j'ai appris qu'il avait eu des soucis avec Windows 7 et avait donc mis à niveau vers Windows 8. Il rencontrait des problèmes significatifs avec des vieilles applis qui refusaient de fonctionner. J'ai réussi à les obliger toutes, sauf une, à s'exécuter, après plusieurs longues heures très frustrantes. C'est alors que j'ai décidé de ne plus jamais acheter un autre OS.
+J'ai enfin migré vers Ubuntu sur ma machine principale avec Karmic Koala, le seul CD que j'avais sous la main. Plus tard, j'ai fait une mise à niveau (une nouvelle installation) vers Lucid Lynx (2010) et n'ai plus jamais regardé en arrière.
+Mon ordinateur tourne actuellement sous la 16.04, Xenial Xerus. Et j'ai la ferme intention de continuer pendant des années avec Linux, et plus particulièrement, avec Ubuntu. L'abandon du support des systèmes 32-bit me déçoit et j’achèterais éventuellement un nouvel ordinateur quand cette version à support à long terme sera en Fin de Vie. Mais pour l'instant, Vive Linux ! Vive Ubuntu !
