-I just love books that do practical things. Learning about Linux while doing practical things is even better. I can say I am not disappointed. Usually the "real world" projects presented in this type of book have no real world applications at all (unless you live under a stone and think that writing a tip calculator is real world). I started reading, thinking I would bump up against hello worlds and tip calculators, but no such luck. This book is solidly written with the modern Linux user in mind. Did I mention that the book is full of illustrations?

+J'aime bien les livres qui font des choses pratiques. Apprendre Linux tout en faisant des choses pratiques est encore meilleur. Je peux dire que je ne suis pas déçu. Habituellement, les projets du « monde réel » présentés dans ce type de livre ne sont pas du tout des applications du monde réel (sauf si vous vivez sous une pierre et pensez qu'écrire un calculateur de pourboire est le monde réel). J'ai commencé à lire, pensant que j'allais me coltiner des « hello world » et des calculateurs de pourboire, mais je n'ai pas eu cette chance. Ce livre est solidement écrit avec en tête un utilisateur de Linux moderne. Ai-je mentionné que ce livre est rempli d'illustrations ?

When the author teaches you something, like setting up a Mediawiki server, he covers everything from the LAMP stack to the choice of database to things like PHP. You just keep learning along the way whilst having fun doing something real. The 'something real' is actually twelve somethings. Go ahead, roll up your sleeves and get into the guts of your system.

+En vérité, je ne peux pas dire qu'il y a eu quoi que ce soit qui ne m’ait pas intéressé. Le troisième chapitre, sur les connexions à distance, commence avec l'importance du chiffrage. Incroyable ? À partir de là, l'auteur monte simplement en puissance et se déplace vers les serveurs Web, l'administration, etc.

+En conclusion, si vous êtes un fan de Linux qui souhaite en savoir plus, ce livre est fait pour vous. Il y a des choses pour chacun dans ce livre. Quand il est dit pratique, c'est vrai. Quand il est dit « monde réel », c'est vrai. Le chapitre six est dédié à la construction d'un dispositif de récupération du système. Le chapitre huit est consacré au paramétrage de son propre serveur OwnCloud. Quand l'auteur vous apprend quelque chose, comme le paramétrage d'un serveur Mediawiki, il parle de tout, depuis la pile LAMP jusqu'au choix de la base de données en passant par des choses comme PHP. Vous apprenez en continu tout en ayant le plaisir de faire quelque chose de réel. Le « quelque chose de réel » compte en fait douze choses. Allez-y, remontez vos manches et plongez dans les arcanes de votre système.
