| So, recently we started supplying clients with Illumineye from VXL. Horrible stuff, but we won’t go into it. The players needed “firmware”, and I was surprised to find that it was a 2GB download. You had to use Unetbootin, and only Unetbootin, to write the “firmware” to a USB stick to flash the players. While installing it, I saw the familiar five orange / purple dots move across the screen. My eye caught a file named wubi.exe and I was sure what was being installed was Ubuntu, not “firmware”. (Before you write me letters, to me, firmware is very low level software, something like a ROM BIOS). I later confirmed that it was indeed Ubuntu. | We went to visit a company who makes an IOT interface, which, they claim, abstracts the IOT devices and connects anything to anything. (Recently partnered with Dell to manufacture them). You know what it was running? Ubuntu. Even more recently, I went to drop a tender document, and the system that keeps track of the tenders is an Ubuntu system. All my suppliers have moved their payment (Kiosk) computers to Ubuntu. Even the supplier I used to work for has let its Fedora payment computers transition to Ubuntu. What I am trying to illustrate is that - love Ubuntu, or hate Ubuntu - you will encounter it everywhere. | Récemment, nous avons commencé à fournir Illumineye de VXL aux clients. | Talking to one the owners of an IOT specialization company, I had the distinct impression that his developers preferred working on Ubuntu. It was quick and easy to set up their development environments, and they did not need to add Linux in virtual machines or WSL. To them (the company), their biggest draw is snaps. They publish their applications and it's fire-and-forget. They do not have to worry about your version of Ubuntu or your architecture. The snap store also allows you to hide your software from everyone who is not supposed to have it too. This is called a brand store. This is handy for IOT software suppliers, who would like you to sign an NDA before getting access to their software. The other thing that came up was security. While Ubuntu is often cited as having more CVE’s than other distro’s - you will find it is because they are actively working on security issues. | Nous avons visité une entreprise qui réalise des interfaces pour IoT (Internet of Things, objets connectés) qui, affirment-ils, résument les dispositifs IoT et connectent tout à tout. | Speaking to a representative of a cell phone company, I found out their “early warning” systems at the cellphone towers use Ubuntu too. The cellphone has sensors to detect low fuel. Generators and fuel play an important role in keeping the grid alive during power outages, as well as at remote locations. When the fuel reaches a low level, a signal is sent and a provider comes and fills the fuel. The system is automated so that it takes some of the load off the cellphone provider. Je suis allé voir la démonstration des systèmes de positionnement en temps réel. Vous savez quoi ? Les deux sont des systèmes Ubuntu et leurs logiciels sophistiqués respectifs venaient de fournisseurs différents. | | En parlant à l'un des propriétaires d'une entreprise spécialisée dans les IoT, j'ai eu la nette impression que ses développeurs préféraient travailler sur Ubuntu. Il est rapide et facile de paramétrer leurs environnements de développement, et ils n'ont pas besoin d'ajouter Linux dans des machines virtuelles ou WSL (Windows sub-system Linux). Pour cette entreprise, le plus attirant, ce sont les snaps. Ils publient leurs applications et c'est lance-et-oublie. Il n'ont pas à s'inquiéter de votre version d'Ubuntu ou de votre architecture. Le magasin des snaps (snap store) vous permet aussi de cacher votre logiciel à tous ceux qui sont supposés ne pas y avoir accès. C'est appelé un « brand store » (magasin de marque). C'est pratique pour les fournisseurs de logiciels pour IoT, qui aimeraient que vous signiez un accord de confidentialité (NDA, non-disclosure Agreement) avant d'avoir accès à leur logiciel. | | En parlant avec un cadre d'une entreprise de téléphonie mobile, j'ai découvert que leurs systèmes de « pré-alarme » dans les pylônes de téléphonie mobile utilisent aussi Ubuntu. La cellule téléphonique a un capteur détectant une niveau bas du carburant. Des générateurs et le carburant jouent un rôle important pour maintenir en activité le réseau pendant les coupures d'électricité, tout comme aux emplacements distants. Quand le carburant atteint un niveau bas, un signal est envoyé et le fournisseur vient refaire le plein. Le système est automatisé de sorte qu'il décharge un peu le fournisseur du réseau téléphonique. Le système tourne sous Ubuntu. |
