 I would like to point out that this is a game from 1991-ish, updated to work on modern displays. It is an excellent game for the young ones, which should keep them busy for ages. (Plus, it wont take up much space on your computer.)
-The PC really lacked for nice platform games in the early 90’s so Crystal caves was considered special, but it was outshone by Prehistorik 1 & 2 and never really floated to the top. It was also riding the wave of Commander Keen from Apogee the year before , that was hugely popular. However, I cannot see it become very popular, even now, in HD, but as I mentioned before, it may keep the kids busy for a fiver. Keep in mind that the original can still be played via DosBox and was free as in “Shareware”.

-I honestly did not like the original, (Coming off titles in the 80’s with soundtracks by the likes of Rob Hubbard / Chris Huelsbeck, it is not hard t see why. ) object sizes were waaaay off, for instance, a mine cart would be smaller than you, but a shoe will be your    (sprite’s) size. This sort of bugged me, as every sprite had to be 16x16 with the odd one larger. Also, because of the limited palette, things would seem to blend into the coloured background. I will include a screen-shot here where you need to spot the main sprite, so you can have an idea what I am talking about. On this front, nothing has changed. It is still the same palette and the same graphics, with sprites that don’t make sense. (Also they were bargain basement sprites compared to other Apogee titles, even compared to 8-bit computer games from the 80’s.)  Do not hold your breath for a story either, then again, a four year old does not need a story. The game-play is simple enough for any kid, you run , you jump, you shoot and you collect colourful objects. No ducking, sliding, double jumping, etc. There are some puzzle elements in the game, but they are very basic – I suppose the targeted audience is under 10 – but kids know when they are being skimped on.

The opportunity here is you can sit down and teach your kids how and play what you made with them. Who knows, you may discover a hidden talent!

If you liked matching gems or clicking on playing cards to sort them into stacks, this is right up your alley. Since the original did not do it for me, the HD version with the music and level editor leaves me with a glass half full and half empty situation. Now here’s the kicker, if what we have now was available in 1992, I may have liked it a bit more.

+L’installation ne s’est pas bien passé et j’ai dû essayer quelques vieilles versions d’Ubuntu avant de pouvoir l'installer.
+Bon, quelles sont les améliorations par rapport à l’original ? Il y a un 4ème monde. Il y a aussi de la musique. Pas de la musique géniale, mais pas non plus des beeps et des boops comme l’original sur les hauts parleurs du PC. Je pense que la musique est importante ici, car le jeu doit être passé à la prochaine génération. Si vous êtes un fanatique inconditionnel des jeux rétro, vous pouvez ne pas aimer la musique et vous pouvez la désactiver.

+Honnêtement, l’original ne m’a pas plu, mais, venant de titres des années 80 avec des bandes son par des musiciens comme Rob Hubbard/Chris Huelsbeck, il n’est pas difficile de voir pourquoi. La taille des objets était complètement erronée. Par exemple, un wagonnet de mine était plus petit que votre personnage, mais une chaussure serait de la taille de votre lutin. Cela m’a un peu irrité, car tous les lutins devaient être 16 x 16 avec un ou deux plus grand de temps en temps. Et aussi, à cause de la palette limitée, des choses semblaient se fondre dans l’arrière-plan coloré. J’inclurai une capture d’écran ici, où vous devez trouver le lutin principal, afin de vous donner une idée de ce dont je parle. Sur ce plan, rien n’a changé. C’est toujours la même palette et les mêmes graphismes, avec des lutins qui ne sont pas logiques. (De plus, c'étaient des lutins au rabais comparés à ceux d’autres titres Apogee, même comparés aux jeux pour ordinateur de 8-bits des années 80.) Mieux vaut ne pas compter sur une histoire non plus ; mais, après tout, un gosse de quatre ans n’a pas besoin d’une histoire. Le jeu même est assez simple pour n’importe quel gosse : vous courez, vous sautez, vous tirez et vous ramassez des objets de toutes les couleurs. Pas d’esquives, pas de glissades, pas de sauts doubles, etc. Il y a quelques éléments d’énigme dans le jeu, mais ils sont très basiques – je pense que le public visé a moins de 10 ans, mais les gosses savent quand ils sont lésés.

+Un plus non négligeable ? Crystal Caves a maintenant son propre éditeur de niveau et vous pouvez partager vos créations avec des copains. Si vous n’êtes pas du genre créatif, jusqu’ici, les niveaux en ligne sont 50/50, ce à quoi on s’attendra puisque la plus part des « créateurs » ont moins de 12 ans. L’éditeur de niveau garantit que vous n’avez pas gaspillé votre argent côté re-jouabilité. L’occasion qui vous est donnée ici est celle de vous asseoir et d'apprendre à vos gosses comment créer des niveaux, puis de jouer ensemble à vos créations. Qui sait, vous pouvez vous découvrir un talent caché !

+Le jeu avance tranquillement et vous apprenez rapidement que vous ne pouvez pas tirer tout le temps, car, d'un, les balles sont limitées et, de deux, vous pouvez toucher quelque chose de vital, nécessaire à votre lutin pour rester en vie. Si vous aimiez apparier des bijoux ou cliquer sur des cartes de jeu pour les trier en piles, ce jeu vous conviendra parfaitement. Puisque l’original ne me convenait pas, la version HD avec la musique et l’éditeur de niveau me laisse avec un verre à moitié plein et à moitié vide. Maintenant, voici le problème : si ce que nous avons maintenant était disponible en 1992, j’aurais pu l’apprécier un peu plus.
