I have a broken keyboard and the guy will insist that I hold down the “D” key when booting to initiate diagnostics. Stupid nonsense like that. On the one hand I cannot fault them, having run a call center myself, but on the other hand sometimes you need someone who is not TOTALLY green. So I had a machine where the fans did not come on and it got hot to the point of shutting down. I called Dell to basically request a replacement board, as everything is on the board, and the firmware was the latest already. After and up-n-down, they agreed to send me a heat sink and two fans. I accepted, knowing I will have to let that machine lie for two weeks then log another ticket. The hardware arrived and I went to install it. After I installed it, and tested it with a stress test, the fans came on. I was surprised and put the old fans back. They also came on. How now brown cow? I put the original heat sink back and the problem returned. This made no sense. I went back and forth a few times and while I was trying different heat sink compounds, I noticed a kink in the heat pipes of the original installation – very slight, but visible at a certain angle. How this affects the heat sensor I have no idea, but it does, somehow. Are we reaching a point where technology is resting on a knife edge? Could the user have damaged it? Certainly, but how does a little kink in semi-round pipes (they are supposed to be round, but Dell flatten them to make the laptops thinner) cause so many issues? The original complaint was that the machine was slow when parsing git pipelines.

+Travailler avec de l’assistance à l’étranger peut être extrêmement irritant. Malheureusement, je dois travailler avec Dell en Inde. C’est vraiment pénible. Mon clavier est cassé et le mec insistera pour que j’appuie sur la touche « D » tout en démarrant pour commencer les diagnostics. Des trucs bêtes comme ça. D’un côté, je ne peux pas les blâmer, car, j’ai moi-même dirigé un centre d’appels, mais, de l’autre côté, parfois vous avez besoin de quelqu’un qui n’est pas un TOTAL débutant. Bon, j’avais une machine sur laquelle les ventilateurs ne démarraient pas et elle devenait tellement chaude qu’elle s’éteignait toute seule. J’ai appelé Dell pour demander une carte de remplacement, car tout est sur la carte et le micro-logiciel était déjà le dernier. Après avoir bien discuté, ils étaient d’accord pour m’envoyer un puits thermique et deux ventilateurs. J’ai accepté tout en sachant que j’allais devoir ne pas utiliser la machine pendant deux semaines, puis enregistrer une autre plainte. Le matériel est arrivé et je l’ai installé. Après, quand je l’ai soumis à un test de stress, les ventilateurs ont démarré. J’étais surpris et j’ai remis les vieux ventilos. Eux aussi ont démarré. Qu’est-ce que c’est que ça ? J’ai remis le radiateur d'origine et le problème a recommencé. Ce n’était pas du tout logique. J’ai fait des aller-retours plusieurs fois et pendant que j’essayais des radiateurs différents, j’ai remarqué un entortillement dans les conduits thermiques de l’installation d’origine ; c’était très léger, mais visible sous un certain angle. Je n’ai aucune idée de comment cela agit sur le capteur thermique, mais, d’une façon ou d’une autre, il le fait. Sommes-nous en train d’atteindre un point où la technologie repose sur une arête vive ? L’utilisateur aurait-il pu l’endommager ? Bien sûr, mais comment un tout petit entortillement dans des tuyaux ovalisés (ils sont censé être ronds, mais Dell les aplatit pour amincir les portables) peut-il engendrer tant de problèmes ? La plainte du départ était que la machine ralentissait en analysant des pipelines git.

+R : Honnêtement, je ne suis pas certain de ce que vous essayez de dire ou faire. Il faut installer Ubuntu à partir d’un média d’installation, que ce soit sur USB ou une carte SD, la première fois, pour l’INSTALLER. Après, vous devrez pouvoir démarrer d’une partition.

To the guy who had the ACPI error – update your BIOS. To the guy getting stuck on GRUB – turn secure boot off, maybe even set your computer security to audit mode. I cannot remember all of them. The guy with the USB issue, it is not your USB drive or ISO if it works on an older computer, it is BIOS again. I seriously cannot remember the other question, I’m sorry. The guy with the code::blocks issue on Ubuntu 23.04 I tested and you are correct, I also only see a red trash can and it will not load, you can run: sudo apt install codeblocks-contrib and you will be golden.

+Q. ET R. : Lecteurs/Lectrices, mon portable s’est planté pour la première fois. Quand il a refonctionné et que LibreOffice a été récupéré, toutes les Q auxquelles je répondais avaient disparu. Pour le gars qui avait une erreur ACPI : mettez votre BIOS à jour. Pour le gars qui se bloque sans cesse sur GRUB : désactiver « secure boot » et peut-être même réglez la sécurité de votre ordinateur en mode audit. Je ne peux pas toutes me les rappeler. Pour le gars avec le problème de l’USB : ce n’est pas votre disque USB ou l’ISO si cela fonctionne sur un ordinateur moins récent ; il s’agit à nouveau du BIOS. Je suis désolé, mais je n’arrive pas à me souvenir de l’autre question. Pour le gars avec le problème de code::blocks sous Ubuntu 23.04 : j’ai fait des tests et vous avez raison. Moi aussi, je ne vois qu’une poubelle rouge et il refuse de se charger. Vous pouvez lancer : sudo apt install codeblocks-contrib et tout ira bien.

+R : Oui, dites à votre père de cliquer sur l’icône en forme d’engrenage quand il se connecte, puis de choisir une session X11 à la place de Wayland. Wayland ne peut pas faire ce genre de choses encore. Anydesk devrait fonctionner lors d’une session X11.

 A: I need a little more info here, are you trying to import from a different account? If so, check on the Betterbird forums, just to be sure. From what I can see, there *should be no problem provided the versions are compatible, as Thunderbird has a tendency not to import newer versions when copied across.

D’après ce que je vois, il ne devrait pas y avoir de problème SI les versions sont compatibles, car Thunderbird a une tendance de ne pas importer de versions plus récentes lors des copies.
