I check German, Russian and Indian sources when compiling the news. (It is usually where you find interesting nuggets) My rudimentary understanding of the languages lets me read the articles, but I rely on Firefox translations to translate them so I can turn them into articles. To my surprise this week, (yes, you will only see this in December and this is mid November) the site - https://www.linux.org.ru/news/  -did not translate any more. The message was that Russian was not supported yet. This is the same plugin/extension I have been using for six months plus, to auto translate the site with. Luckily Librewolf has a built-in translator, so I’m not dependent on Firefox Translate, but it is flawed and does not work if, say the first letter of the article is simply a “B” and you cannot open a translation in a new tab. This means I will have to wash some articles through the abortion that is Google direct translator, meaning I need to get used to the wrong translations again. Not to mention the wasted time and me trying to be free of Google as much as possible. This means I now have to keep two tabs open, one for the translation and the original to be able to copy the page link.  Can tech not be free of politics??? It feels like for every step forward humanity takes, as soon as politics gets involved, we take two steps back. Am I the only one?

Lorsque je rassemble les actus, je vérifie des sources allemandes, russes et indiennes. (C’est généralement là où je trouve des pépites intéressantes.) Ma compréhension rudimentaire des langages me permet de lire les articles, mais je dépends des traductions sur Firefox pour pouvoir en faire une actu. À ma surprise, cette semaine (oui, vous verrez ceci en décembre et nous sommes en mi-novembre) le site - https://www.linux.org.ru/news/ - n’était plus traduit. Le message était que le russe n’était pas encore pris en charge. C’est le/la même greffon/extension que j’utilise depuis plus de six mois pour pouvoir traduire le site. Heureusement, Librewolf a un traducteur intégré, ce qui fait que je ne dépends pas de Firefox Translate, mais il a des défauts et ne fonctionne pas si, disons, la première lettre d’un article est tout simplement une « B » et vous ne pouvez pas ouvrir une traduction dans un nouvel onglet. Cela signifie qu’il me faut mettre quelques articles dans l'horreur du traducteur direct de Google, ce qui signifie qu’il va me falloir m’accoutumer à des traductions erronées à nouveau. Pour ne rien dire de la perte du temps et du fait que j’essaie de me libérer de Google autant que possible.  Cela signifie que je dois maintenant avoir deux onglets ouverts, l’un pour la traduction et l'autre pour l’original pour pouvoir copier le lien. La tech ne peut-elle pas être divorcée de la politique ??? J’ai l’impression que pour chaque pas en avant de l’humanité, dès que la politique s’en mêle, on fait deux pas en arrière. Suis-je le seul ?

 A: I also installed it on vanilla Ubuntu, to test and it does not run. You can open a terminal and type snap run ohmygiraffe and see the output. For me it is some libGL error. You should be able to grab the source code and run it with Love2d. https://github.com/2439905184/oh-my-giraffe

 Q: I just installed yt-dlp on Ubuntu 22.04. It is broken. I then checked Github and saw it is out of date. I did a yt-dlp -U, but it is disabled in Debian based builds. Any idea as to the way forward?

+Q : Je viens d’installer oh my giraffe à partir du magasin d’applis. Rien ne se passe quand je le lance. Peut-on faire questionner les Snaps dans un terminal ? J’ai Ubuntu 22.04, 64 Go de mémoire, un SSD de 1 To et un i9. Cela devrait être plus qu’assez ! Les Snaps sont censés être universels et ça fonctionnait très bien sous Ubuntu 16.04.
+R : Moi aussi, je l’ai installé sur Ubuntu normal pour le tester et il ne se lance pas. Vous pouvez ouvrir un terminal et taper snap run ohmygiraffe et regarder la sortie.  Q: My laptop’s brightness changes automatically the whole time and it is driving me nuts. I read up on it and it senses via the camera. My camera’s in-use light is off, so how is it seeing? Is this a privacy issue with my Dell or is it Ubuntu??

+Q : Je faisais du ménage dans Ubuntu, en supprimant des paquets que je n’utilise pas et, quand j’ai terminé, Ubuntu n’avait plus qu’une option de connexion pour l’interface en ligne de commande. +R : En règle général, il y a un capteur de lumière *à côté de la caméra de votre portable qui détecte la luminosité, mais vous pouvez le désactiver dans les paramètres d’Ubuntu sous alimentation.

 A: Some machines just do not have the ability to boot from SD card. You can go through the BIOS settings with a fine-toothed comb and see if you find anything, (maybe update it) but if there is nothing, there is no way to make it boot from SD card, regardless of OS.

-A: Ubuntu has generic drivers for a lot of printers. If yours works fine as is, I suggest leaving well enough alone. Linux drivers for printers, even from manufacturers, are notoriously out of date and even cause segfaults. Unless there is something your driver does, that the kernel cannot do, be happy and carry on.

+R : Ubuntu a des pilotes génériques pour beaucoup d’imprimantes. Si la votre fonctionne très bien telle quelle, je suggère de ne pas y toucher, car le mieux est l’ennemi du bien. Les pilotes Linux pour les imprimantes, mêmes ceux des fabricants, sont notoirement périmés et peuvent même causer des erreurs de segmentation. À moins que votre pilote ne fasse quelque chose que le noyau ne peut pas faire, soyez heureux et continuez.

 A: OK, right after install, if Ubuntu cannot identify your display it goes to 800x600 as not to damage older screens. I suggest updating first and then only trying to change your display properties, after rebooting it. The path you are editing files in is for X11-sessions, so if you boot into Wayland , as is the default, it will have no effect. Please give a bit more details if you have a question, it helps with identifying the problem. Also, try using 22.04.03 when installing, it fixes some errors.

+R : OK, tout de suite après une installation, si Ubuntu n’arrive pas à identifier votre affichage, il choisit 800 x 600 afin de ne pas endommager des écrans vieillissants. Je suggère de faire une mise à jour d’abord, puis de n’essayer de changer les propriétés d’affichage qu’après le redémarrage. Le chemin dans lequel vous éditez des fichiers est pour des sessions X11 et, si vous démarrez dans Wayland, par défaut, il n’aura aucun effet. S’il vous plaît, donnez plus de détails si vous avez une question ; cela aide à identifier le problème. Et aussi, essayez d’installer la 22.04.03, car elle corrige quelques erreurs.

 A: The mouse cursor only stays on screen if pushed to the top or the left. Try right hand side or bottom.

Quelqu’un m’a suggéré de la mettre hors de l’écran, mais la mienne atteint le bord et reste là.  A: OK if you cannot install anything I suggest trying lspci like so: lspci -nnk|grep -iA3 network  -Just look for “network controller” if you have multiple entries.

 Q: In stock Ubuntu 22.04, when I’m watching a youtube video, and I check something in my gnome-extensions quickly, the sound in the video continues to play, but the motion stops at the point of me fiddling . I have to go back to the video in Firefox and skip backwards a bit for the video to continue. It’s driving me wild.
-A: I have seen this before, and 9/10 times it was the FireFox Snap, especially if you have customized pointers and themes installed. I haven’t gotten to the bottom of it, but you can fix it by installing another browser that is *not a Snap, like Librewolf and keep the Snap browser closed.

 Q: I want to install the latest version of Ardour 7, but the repositories only have version 6. Everywhere it is advertised as “free”, but everywhere I go to get 7, even on the main page, they want lots of money. Where is the free?

+Q : J’ai du mal à trouver comment exécuter xpenguins sur Ubuntu 22.04. J’utilise une session X, pas Wayland. J’ai un i9 avec 32 Go de mémoire et une carte gfx dédiée qui a 3 ans. Ubuntu est mise à jour un max – le problème ne vient pas de là. J’ai installé un commutateur de carte gfx et essayé sur les deux, mais toujours pas de pingouins.
+R : Génial, tout simplement génial. Je me souviens d’avoir obtenu xpenguins de Tucows jadis. Je le soupçonne d’avoir dans les vingt ans et c’était probablement écrit pour GTK2. Je le déteste quand des gens disent gratuit, mais il ne l’est pas.(Windows adore cela, disant « téléchargement gratuit » : le téléchargement est gratuit, mais le logiciel ne l’est pas et cette deuxième partie n’est jamais mentionnée.)
