 Most of the devices require a mobile phone with the Meshtastic app, but you need only Bluetooth enabled to send the message from the phone to the device. The message is then sent from the device. You can have no SIM card and wifi off on the phone, and it’ll still work. Remember: the message is going via radio. The phone is not sending the message. There is at least one device (the T-deck) that has a built-in keyboard and is completely standalone.

+J’ai découvert Meshtastic tout simplement à cause d’une suggestion des algorithmes de YouTube puisque, par le passé, j’avais recherché des trucs sur la radio. L’idée derrière Meshtastic est d’envoyer des messages texte d’un dispositif à un autre sur les ondes radio, mais, plutôt que d’aller simplement de point à point, vous pouvez router votre message à travers d’autres nœuds (alias dispositifs) pour atteindre votre destination. Cela veut dire que vous pouvez atteindre des dispositifs qui sont beaucoup éloignés que ceux que l’antenne de votre dispositif peut atteindre. Au besoin, vous pouvez aller du point A au point B via les points F et Q.

Initially I was getting, at most, about 1km. Which is actually pretty good considering the placement of my home unit and the area I was testing in.

+J’ai acheté deux appareils et j’en laissais tourner un à la maison en emportant l’autre au bureau avec moi ; j’envoyais sans cesse des messages vers l’unité à la maison pour voir la distance que je pouvais obtenir. Au départ, ce n’était qu’environ 1 km au plus. Ce qui est en fait pas mal en tenant compte de l’emplacement de l’unité à la maison et de la zone dans laquelle je faisais les tests.

I bought an 868 compatible yagi from Amazon and mounted it on my roof with V2 of my tupperware box now containing the connection to an external antenna and a larger USB battery pack that lasts for a good 5 or 6 days. For my other Heltec (that I take with me) and my T-deck, I bought a case that came with a battery pack and antenna from eBay.

 With the new external antenna in place I started testing. I mounted the Heltec in its new case to the handlebars of my bike and peddled around sending messages to myself.

+Si vous voulez que votre signal aille plus loin, vous devez utiliser une bonne antenne externe. J’ai acheté une Yagi compatible 868 chez Amazon et l’ai montée sur mon toit avec le V2 de ma boîte Tupperware qui contient maintenant la connexion à une antenne externe et un plus gros bloc de piles sur USB qui dure un bon 5 ou 6 jours. Pour l’autre Heltec (que j’emmène avec moi) et mon T-deck, j’ai acheté un boîtier avec un bloc de piles et une antenne sur eBay.

+La nouvelle antenne étant en place, j’ai commencé mes tests. J’ai monté le Heltec dans son nouveau boîtier sur le guidon de mon vélo et j’ai pédalé à droite et à gauche en envoyant des messages à moi-même.
+A ma grande surprise, je pouvais facilement envoyer un message à mon dispositif à la maison d’environ 2,40 km ! Et j'étais au milieu de la ville. Je n’ai eu des problèmes pour envoyer un message que sur une seule route qui était largement entourée d’arbres.

 I’m still testing my devices. I’m hoping to go further afield during the nice weather and test the range to find my absolute limit. But even that changes as more and more nodes appear to extend the range. Remember, the more nodes online, the bigger the mesh gets and the more range everyone in that area gets.

 So what’s the point of this? Well, imagine if you’re in a city where you experience power outages or natural disasters? Your power is out, maybe the cell towers are down (or overloaded), and you’ve no internet. How do you message people? Meshtastic. Gift some to your friends or relatives. As long as your area has enough people running a device(s), then, if nothing else, you might be able to even message a stranger to ask for assistance.

+Je continue à tester mes dispositifs. J’espère aller plus loin pendant qu'il fait beau pour tester les distances et trouver la limite absolue. Mais cela change au fur et à mesure que des nœuds supplémentaires apparaissent pour étendre la distance. Souvenez-vous que, plus il y a de nœuds en ligne et plus le maillage devient grand, plus la distance que tout le monde dans la zone obtient grandit aussi.
+Bon. A quoi ça sert ? Imaginez que vous êtes dans une ville où il y a des coupures de courant ou des catastrophes naturelles. Vous n’avez plus d’électricité et peut-être que les stations cellulaires ne fonctionnent pas (ou sont surchargées) et vous n’avez pas de Net. Comment envoyer des messages à des gens ? Meshtastic. Donnez-en à vos amis ou famille. Du moment où votre zone a assez de gens qui font tourner un/des appareil(s), vous pourriez même, à défaut d'autre chose, envoyer un message à un étranger pour demander de l’aide.
+Bien entendu, je ne dis pas que vous devriez compter sur ces choses. Puisque, si tout dégringole, les gens qui font tourner ces appareils pourraient être trop affairés pour vous aider à router vos messages ou pour vous répondre, mais cela vaut sans conteste mieux que de dépendre des stations cellulaires ou du Net si tout dégringolait.
