+Ah oui, j’ai oublié d’expliquer la finalité de la démarche... L’idée est de collecter des ordinateurs fonctionnels pour en faire don à des élèves dépourvus d’équipements chez eux en leur donnant au passage des notions d’hygiène numérique.

Des enseignants (Mme Ott, Mme Verdier et M. Sahuc) se sont investis dans le projet. Ils identifient les élèves dépourvus d’équipements chez eux, appellent les parents pour leur expliquer le projet... Une fois les élèves identifiés, grâce à l’espace de co-working de la ville de Montlouis (le RubixCo), je fais une matinée IT lors de laquelle je reçois pour chaque session, l’élève identifié accompagné d’un de ses deux parents.

Next, I showed them how to keep the system in shape (updates, adding or suppressing software), setting up Firefox (adding extensions, adjusting parameters, DOH,…), and the handling of their own data on the machine (the creation and manipulation of folders and files).

Going further after the gifts from the STMicroelectronics Foundation, I answered project calls to find the money necessary to buy refurbished machines from specialized companies… It’s crazy or paradoxical to be forced to purchase refurbished machines while there are thousands of sleeping computers in the firms.

+••une sensibilisation à l’impact du numérique sur l’environnement (ressources nécessaire à la fabrication d’un ordinateur portable de 2kg, bande annonce du film « Welcome to Sodom » sur la décharge de DEEE au Ghana...),
+••une sensibilisation aux logiciels libres (origines, principes, sécurité, vs logiciels propriétaires),
+••et un dernier volet plus pratique, l’installation d’un système libre (Ubuntu). Cette partie pratique permet aussi de faire de l’hygiène numérique (robustesse d’un mot de passe, comment bien configurer son navigateur internet Firefox, DNS over https pour filtrer les sites porno...). Ensuite, je leur montre comment maintenir leur système (mise à jour, ajout/suppression de logiciels), configurer Firefox (ajout d’extensions, réglage des paramètres, DOH...), et gérer leurs données sur la machine (création/manipulation de dossiers/fichiers).

 Beginning a year and a half ago, we have succeeded in giving equipment to 30 students. With this article, I’m also sending out a call to the readers: if there are eligible laptops in your firms, I would be happy to have them (ideally and at a minimum: 13 or 14 -inch screens, a 6th generation Intel core i5, and 4 or 8 GB of RAM. A hard drive isn’t necessary since I replace mechanical disks with SSDs).

+Le bilan de ce projet après un an d’existence, c’est que j’ai été très naïf de croire que les entreprises accepteraient de nous donner des machines même celles destinées à la destruction. Au-delà des dons de la Fondation STMicroelectronics, j’ai répondu à des appels à projet pour trouver de l’argent afin de pouvoir acheter des machines reconditionnées auprès de sociétés spécialisées... C’est assez fou/paradoxal d’être obligé d’acheter des machines reconditionnées alors que des milliers d’ordinateurs dorment dans les entreprises.
+Depuis un an et demi, nous avons réussi à équiper 30 élèves. Au travers de cet article, je lance aussi un appel aux lecteurs/lectrices, si vous avez des ordinateurs portables éligibles dans vos entreprises, je suis preneur (idéalement des 13 ou 14 pouces, intel core i5 de 6e génération minimum, 4 ou 8 Go de Ram, pas forcément avec un disque dur puisque je mets un SSD à la place des disques mécaniques).
