 One of my previous complaints about Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS was that, after a fresh boot, its idle RAM was 3.9 GB. Pop!_OS 24.04 Alpha 7 increased that to 4.3 GB and the Beta is 4.7 GB, so this is not a lightweight distribution! In comparison, also running on Ventoy Ubuntu 25.04 and Ubuntu Cinnamon 25.04 both idle at 2.3 GB.

 A desktop setting from the panel menu allows selecting “floating” or “tiling” windows with a simple switch. Despite all the development emphasis on tiling, in my testing I found that Pop!_OS's tiling is not really of much value on smaller screens. Trying it out on a standard 1920 × 1080 pixel laptop screen, it works fine with two application windows open, but the results are not good with six! Tiling two applications puts one on each half of the screen; tiling six results makes most of them too small to use. Tiling may be useful on a really big screen or even a multi-screen setup, but on laptops it does not work well.

Il est assez tard dans le développement pour s'acharner encore à ajouter des fonctionnalités manquantes, mais les notes de la version bêta promettent plusieurs correctifs pour la prochaine version candidate, notamment pour l'implémentation de xwayland afin d'améliorer l'expérience de jeu, l'arrondi des coins de la fonction « info-bulle » pour correspondre à ceux des fenêtres, les suggestions Flatpak dans le COSMIC Store et des améliorations de l'accessibilité pour les lecteurs d'écran. Si ces améliorations sont apportées, la version candidate pourrait contenir de nombreuses nouveautés.
+En attendant l'amélioration de ces applications, de nombreuses alternatives sont disponibles dans les dépôts et peuvent être installées à la place. J'ai testé le gestionnaire de fichiers Nemo 6.0.2 et l'éditeur de texte gedit 46.2, et ils fonctionnent parfaitement sous Pop!_OS.

+Entre la sortie de Pop!_OS 24.04 Alpha 7 le 24 avril 2025 et cette version bêta du 25 septembre 2025, le développement semble avoir ralenti. Il est possible que des travaux supplémentaires aient été menés en coulisses et que la version candidate (R2C) offre des fonctionnalités nettement supérieures.
+Dans cette version bêta, la majeure partie du bureau fonctionne correctement (à l'exception de quelques plantages occasionnels) et seules les applications COSMIC principales nécessitent l'ajout de nouvelles fonctionnalités.
+L'équipe de développement de System76 a consacré trois ans et demi au nouveau bureau COSMIC et nous devrions tous bientôt découvrir le résultat final sous la forme d'une version stable, probablement plus tard en 2025.
