With great passion, I spent quite a lot of time to set up the system before I really began to “use” it, because at that time many settings can not be modified in a graphic interface. One of the most attractive things was that when you need special software, you can find almost any program you want and download it without difficulty, rather than search for it and its crack all the way around the Internet, and jump from site to site in order to locate a faster server. However, the system broke down several times, and finally it became unbootable. I tried to fix up the problem myself, but did not make it because I was not familiar with Grub. So I gave up, and sadly shifted back to the risky pirated Windows XP.

They had many defects in function and looks, unlike Ubuntu. This time, Ubuntu worked well and works well up to the very moment I write this sentence with OpenOffice. The system has been updated from 8.04 to 10.10 all the way. I am very surprised but so happy to find that Ubuntu really has made so much progress as it upgraded. For example, I can select any popular source server in a GUI instead of beginning with “sudo gedit...” So many applications like R-Kward (package for scientific statistics, and its GUI), Chromium, Adobe PDF reader, have been added to the Software Center or Synaptic package manager, so that I have almost forgotten how to type “sudo apt-get...” :-P. For a none-skillful user, using commands to do everything is really difficult, though now I can use them a little when necessary. Also, I am able to use OpenOffice Writer and Bibus (an application for bibliography management) to write my papers. To write in Chinese, I choose IBUS, a more convenient input method compared to SCIM, as the default input method. Also, I can make use of Jemboss (a package for biological research) to make alignments of the DNA sequences as soon as I get them in the laboratory, but without worrying about having the system infected by any trojan or virus. Another thing to be emphasised is that I can finally read Full Circle Magazine through Chromium (alias for Chrome web browser in Linux), and all the bookmarks and settings are cloned intact. Of course, I should not forget “gconf-editor”, with which I can easily set so many parameters that we might have set with gedit or vi.

I selected a nice wallpaper from a KDE wallpaper package I downloaded through Synaptic Package Manager. I also made a dock which I had always been crazy about since I first saw it on an Imac, docking all those commonly used programs on it as you can see in the first snapshot. I love the gmail gadget. It looks nice and will check mail for me every time I log in and tell me how many messages are left unread. On the system panel, I placed as few buttons as possible since the screen is relatively narrow. I set the background color to brown, for I would for once or twice miss the classic style of Human too. I reduced the number of working areas to only two, one for working, the other for entertainment. Simple is the best, isn't it? Thanks to god, in spite of the integrated graphic card, it can still display some special effects, for example, switching between working areas like what Windows 7 can do (see picture 2). I think this is even cooler. So I could always be somewhat flattered when I showed of my desktop to my friends. By doing that, I hope they would be struck by Ubuntu and began to use it too.

J'ai également mis à jour le système d'exploitation de mon deuxième PC vers Windows XP. Petit à petit, J'ai cependant remarqué que ces fichiers étaient toujours bourrés de trojans et de programmes « backdoor » visant à surveiller nos informations privées comme le code des cartes bancaires, des courriels ou des comptes Warcraft, etc.

+Pour me débarrasser de ces risques, j'ai essayé un système Ubuntu sur mon ordinateur, c'était Ubuntu 7.04 ou 7.10. Le logo de démarrage était vraiment agréable ; plus joli que celui de maintenant. Avec beaucoup d'enthousiasme, j'ai passé pas mal de temps à configurer le système avant de l'« utiliser » réellement, car, à ce moment-là, beaucoup de paramètres ne pouvaient pas être modifiés dans l'interface graphique. L'une des choses les plus attirantes : quand vous aviez besoin d'un logiciel particulier, vous pouviez presque trouver n'importe quel programme et le télécharger sans difficulté, plutôt que le chercher lui et son « crack » partout sur internet en passant de site en site pour dénicher le serveur le plus rapide. Toutefois, le système s'est planté plusieurs fois et, finalement, je ne pouvais plus le redémarrer. J'ai tenté de résoudre le problème moi-même, mais n'ai pas réussi car je ne connaissais pas Grub. J'ai donc abandonné et suis tristement retourné à mon Windows XP piraté et risqué.

+Environ un an plus tard, j'ai appris qu'une version du système Ubuntu était disponible pour les netbooks. J'ai donc, à nouveau, installé ce système, mais cette fois-ci sur mon ASUS EeePC-1000HE. C'était il y a à peu près un an et demi. Avant cela, j'ai testé l'OS que le fabriquant proposait et Moblin 2.0 (un système pour les netbooks développé initialement par Intel, mais désormais repris par Meego). Je n'ai été satisfait par aucun des deux. Ils étaient défectueux en fonctions et en apparence, contrairement à Ubuntu. Cette fois-ci, Ubuntu fonctionna bien et fonctionne toujours bien au moment où j'écris cette phrase avec OpenOffice. Le système a été mis à jour à chaque fois depuis la 8.04 jusqu'à la 10.10. Je suis très surpris, mais si content qu'Ubuntu ait réellement fait autant de chemin au fil des versions. Par exemple, je peux sélectionner n'importe quel serveur de sources populaire dans l'interface graphique au lieu de commencer par « sudo gedit… ». Tant d'applications, comme R-Kward (un paquet pour les statistiques scientifiques et sa GUI), Chromium, le lecteur PDF d'Adobe, ont été ajoutées à la Logithèque ou au gestionnaire de paquets Synaptic, que j'ai presque oublié comment saisir « sudo apt-get… » :-P Pour un utilisateur non-initié, utiliser les commandes pour tout faire est vraiment difficile, bien que, maintenant, je sache les utiliser un peu si nécessaire. Je suis également capable de me servir d'OpenOffice Writer et de Bibus (une application de gestionnaire de bibliographie) pour écrire mes rapports. Pour écrire en chinois, j'ai choisi IBUS par défaut, une méthode plus pratique que SCIM. Je peux aussi exploiter Jemboss (un paquet pour la recherche biologique) pour faire des alignements de séquences ADN dès que je les récupère dans le laboratoire, mais sans craindre l'infestation du système  par un trojan ou un virus quelconque. Une autre chose à souligner : je peux enfin lire le magazine Full Circle dans Chromium (alias le navigateur Chrome pour Linux) et tous les marque-pages et les paramétrages sont clonés parfaitement. Bien sûr, je ne dois pas oublier « gconf-editor », avec lequel je peux facilement paramétrer beaucoup de choses que nous avions sans doute configuré avec gedit ou vi.

+En plus de tous les avantages mentionnés ci-dessus, cette fois, Ubuntu est devenu de plus en plus beau que jamais, bien que le thème classique Human manque sans doute à beaucoup d'anciens utilisateurs. J'apprécie le style donné par le créateur pour les netbooks, ces icônes sont assez larges pour les utilisateurs ordinaires et elles ont des couleurs claires et sont vraiment belles. Quoi qu'il en soit, j'ai abandonné cela, car mon netbook s'est avéré vraiment lent. Je suis donc revenu à l'interface originale de Gnome. J'ai sélectionné un beau fond d'écran depuis un paquet KDE téléchargé depuis le gestionnaire de paquets Synaptic. J'ai également mis un dock dont j'ai toujours été fou depuis que je l'avais vu sur un iMac, pour y mettre tous les programmes habituellement utilisés. J'adore le widget gmail. Il est beau, vérifie mes courriels à chaque fois que je me connecte et me dit combien de messages n'ont pas été lus. Sur le panneau du système, j'ai placé le moins de boutons possible puisque l'écran est relativement étroit. J'ai mis la couleur du fond en marron, au cas où le style classic Human me manque aussi de temps à autres. J'ai réduit le nombre d'espaces de travail à deux seulement, un pour travailler et l'autre pour les loisirs. Le plus simple c'est le mieux, non ? Grâce à Dieu, malgré la carte graphique intégrée, je peux toujours afficher quelques effets spéciaux, comme par exemple changer d'espace de travail comme le fait Windows 7. Je pense que c'est même plus cool encore. Comme cela, je peux toujours être félicité quand je montre mon bureau à mes amis. En faisant cela, j'espère qu'ils seront captivés par Ubuntu et commenceront à l'utiliser eux aussi.
+Tout compte fait, je suis plus que satisfait de mon système actuel. Mais arrivez-vous à croire qu'il y ait encore à en attendre ? Bien que ma vie de médecin et d'étudiant en médecine puisse être en quelque sorte mécanique et barbante, Ubuntu y ajoute quand même vraiment beaucoup de joie et de passion.
