| I have to start this month with an apology about the state of the previous issue (FCM#79). To cut a long story short: I ran a dd command without properly checking drive letters, and completely annihilated my 1TB drive partitions and lost all my data. Including, of course, the Scribus file for FCM#79. Needless to say, I've written up an article on how to backup your data and a brief article on data recovery. Take it from me, don't sit there and think (like I did) that it'll never happen to you. It can! | You'll see from the cover this month that I've put focus on Charles' Linux Lab article. I'm a firm believer in reusing old hardware. Just because it's not the latest and greatest doesn't mean it should go unused or abandoned. Someone out there, especially the elderly, could use it to keep in touch over the Internet. Even you, yourself, could put it to use as a file/printer/web server. That old PC shouldn't go unloved! |

| Anyway, enough doom mongering. We have a full house of articles for you again. If you're a Blender fan, don't panic, Nicholas will be back next month. With Python, and LibreOffice, and there's a great article on using the Logical Volume Manager. I'm not even going to pretend I know much about it. Give it a read and see what you think. | If you miss the good old days of Gnome 2.x, then you might want to have a look at Lucas' Command & Conquer article on Cinnamon. Think of it as Gnome 3.x, but made to look and function like 2.x. It's one of the desktop environments that come with Linux Mint. I'm pretty sure you can install it on any distro to coincide with, or replace, your current desktop. Lucas' article will tell you for sure. |

| Needing a review, I wrote up a quick article about my USB Microscope that I bought a couple of years ago. It's great fun and recently came in handy when I was cataloging a bundle of old coins I have. It may seem like a cheap USB gimmick (I always get asked about it when I post images from it on Google+), but this is one instance where it really did come in handy. | It's almost the end for 2013, but fear not. There'll still be a December issue to help you see in 2014. Especially if you're a Christmas grinch like me... |

| For you gamers, we have a review by Oscar of Bastion. At the moment, I'm trying out Starbound which is fun. It looks (and plays) very like Terraria, but has its own little quirks. It's still in beta, but I may review it next month. | All the best, and keep in touch! |

| | En regardant la couverture de ce numéro, vous verrez que j'ai mis l'accent sur l'article du Labo Linux de Charles. Je suis un fervent supporter de la réutilisation du vieux matériel. Ne pas être le plus récent ou le plus génial ne signifie pas devoir être inutilisé ou abandonné. D'aucuns, surtout les personnes âgées, pourraient l'utiliser pour garder le contact par Internet. Même vous, vous pourriez le transformer en serveur de fichier, serveur web ou serveur d'impression. Les vieux PC ne méritent pas d'être mal aimés ! |

Pensez que c'est un Gnome 3.x, mais faites-le ressembler et fonctionner comme un 2.x. C'est l'un des environnements de bureau livrés avec Linux Mint. Je suis presque sûr que vous pourrez l'installer sur n'importe quelle distribution pour aller avec, ou remplacer, le bureau actuel. L'article de Lucas vous le dira, c'est sûr. |
