KODI Room - Tips and Tricks Over the past couple of years, we’ve had a lot of people coming to our refurbishing project asking for computers to run KODI on. Whether it’s prompted by rising television costs, the low cost of Android TV boxes, Internet-specific streaming shows, or simply being able to better choose the content, programs like KODI and PLEX are changing the way people consume media. Whether you’re using KODI on an Android box or on a PC, there are a great number of things you can do with KODI. This new column is dedicated to the interesting tips, tools and add-ons available for KODI. Each month, we’ll look at several useful KODI tips, add-ons or tools. The first tip, KODI’s System Events, comes courtesy of Team KODI’s Nate Betzen who pointed out this tip in an episode of Kord Kutters (which, by the way, is available as an Add-on in KODI). The System > Events sub-menu option is useful when you’re trying to troubleshoot problems with KODI. If you’ve copied some media to KODI, and KODI isn’t properly scraping it, chances are you’ll see it in Events. In the screenshot, two television shows, Homeland s01e09 and Homeland s01e07, have failed to scan to the television library. The shows are named correctly: <showname> season and episode. The problem in this case is that they’re not in a Homeland named sub-directory. Events won’t tell you this, but it will give you an idea of what might be causing your problems. Finding the Events sub-menu is a bit tricky, it’s just below the word System when you click System in the main menu (provided you’re using the default Confluence KODI skin).

Want to watch television shows and movies, but do it legally? This second tip, the CrackleR add-on in the KODI repositories, lets you watch a selection of mainstream movies and television shows without subscribing to anything. The catch? Advertisements appear at certain points within each movie or television show. Crackle.com, the site the feeds come from, is owned, surprise, surprise, by Sony Pictures Entertainment. Sony has partnered with over 20 studios to help bring more content to Crackle. Crackle also features some original programming content. To install CrackleR, click Video > Add-ons > Get More, and select the CrackleR add-on. If you regularly add media to your KODI system, this third tip will be useful to you. The XBMC Library Auto Update will automatically update your content every 4 hours. This time can be adjusted in the add-on configuration. The Auto Update add-on can also be configured to “clean” the library (though this is not on by default). If you remove (or rename) media from KODI, setting the XBMC Library Auto Update to clean will remove content you’ve removed from your media library. Earlier, I mentioned how Events showed us that the Homeland episodes were not being added to our media library. To fix the issue, we added a folder called Homeland under our tv shows folder and moved the Homeland episodes to that folder. When we installed the XBMC Library Auto Update add-on, it ran for the first time and correctly scraped the Homeland TV show information for all of the Homeland shows.

If we moved or changed the content, the library would adjust accordingly the next time Auto Update runs (4 or so hours). Install the XBMC Library Auto Update add-on by clicking on Programs > Get More > XBMC Library Auto Update. The last tip for this month is a bit more fun if you’ve populated your library with movies and television shows. The Movie Quiz add-on can be found by clicking Programs > Get More > Movie Quiz. Movie Quiz goes through all the movie and television content stored on your computer and asks you questions based on your collection. This is a great add-on when you get a group of movie buffs all in one room. That’s it for this month’s KODI Room.
