Ubuntu On A Phone In the Q&A column of September 2019 (FCM#150), a reader asked how he could put Ubuntu on his phone. Erik replied with the suggestion of an app called Drivedroid, available on the Google Play Store. It, however, requires rooting your phone. In a tutorial published in January 2019 (FCM#141), I explained how, through trial and error, I succeeded in putting Ubuntu with XFCE4 on my Honor 5C, which is now over 4 years old. It can go no higher than Android 7 and has a total of 2GB of RAM, with an average of between 600 and 900 MB available at any one time. Today, as we all know, Linux needs at least 1GB to perform well.

Dans la rubrique Q. ET R. du numéro de septembre 2019 (le FCM n° 150), un lecteur a demandé comment mettre Ubuntu sur son téléphone. Erik a répondu avec la suggestion d’une appli nommée Drivedroid, disponible dans la Play Store. Toutefois, cette appli nécessite de « rooter » votre mobile.
Dans un tutoriel publié en janvier 2019 (dans le FCM n° 141), j’ai expliqué comment, en tâtonnant, j’ai réussi à mettre Ubuntu avec XFCE4 sur mon Honor 5C qui a maintenant plus de quatre ans. Il ne se met plus à jour depuis Android 7 et a en tout et pour tout 2 Go de RAM, avec, en moyenne, de 600 à 900 Mo disponible à un moment donné. Aujourd’hui, on sait que Linux a besoin d’au moins 1 Go pour bien fonctionner.
The apps I used were UserLAnd and bVNC. It was NOT necessary to root my phone. The people, especially Corbin, on UserLAnd at Github were most helpful, so here is the address again : https://github.com/CypherpunkArmory/UserLAnd/issues/ Emails may be sent to support@userland.tech On Huawei or Honor phones, with at least Android 9, their team has had no reports of any problems at all. Today, the distributions available are Alpine, Arch, Debian, Kali and Ubuntu. Plus various desktops and software. Might I suggest that before your readers go through the hassle of rooting (that will destroy the guarantee of their phone), they try UserLAnd and bVNC?
Les applis dont je me suis servi étaient UserLAnd et bVNC. Ce n’était pas nécessaire de rooter le téléphone. Sur des mobiles Huawei ou Honor avec au moins Android 9, leur équipe n’a eu aucun rapport de problèmes, quels qu’ils soient. Aujourd'hui, les distributions disponibles sont Alpine, Arch, Debian, Kali et Ubuntu avec, en plus, divers bureaux et logiciels. Pourrais-je suggérer qu’avant de se donner la peine de « rooter » leur dispositif, ce qui en annulerait la garantie, les lecteurs essaient UseLAnd et bVNC ?

Quand mon fidèle Honor 5C mourra enfin et que je m'achèterai un nouveau téléphone mobile, l’une des premières choses que je ferai sera d'y mettre UserLAnd et bVNC dessus (sans doute avec LXDE plutôt que XFCE4). Et, bien entendu, j’en ferai le compte-rendu dans le magazine Full Circle.
