SPEECH TO TEXT

While translating the Q&A column of FCM#161 (for the French version of the magazine), I read with interest that there are two speech-to-text applications for Ubuntu; Simon (from KDE) and Deep Speech (from Mozilla). After a bit of searching on the KDE site, I came across a download button for the beta of Simon. I was also able to watch a bit of the training video. When I followed the link to Deep Speech, all I got was a page full of code. Because of this, it seems logical for me to conclude that neither is 100% usable, except for people with advanced knowledge of Linux.

That being said, how can Android provide speech-to-text with almost no problem at all? Once you have realized you need to speak naturally, rather than dictate your text. The training was apparently by doing. As with even written texts, where the automatic corrections can be catastrophic, you must, of course, go over the message/letter before sending it, to put in periods and capitals where necessary and to correct the (relatively few) misunderstandings.

Is there any way to use Android’s speech-to-text capacities in Ubuntu?

Perhaps I should have sent this email to Erik for the Q. and A. column, but you rarely receive letters, so I decided to do it this way.

With very best wishes and many thanks for the FCM, AuntieE (French Translation Team)
