I have a pine phone. To those of you who have not heard of pine phone look at pine64.com. It’s a Linux phone which can run about 20 different Linux OS’s, but it’s not sold as a complete phone, it was sold as a development phone. Until the software is perfect. I will explain why I bought one. I do not like the two main OS’s that phones come with. There’s Android, which is Google and iOS which is an Apple product. Both very lacking in privacy! About 9 years ago Ubuntu reckoned that the world was ready for a Linux phone, and I was very excited by this and ordered one. It was a Spanish company called BQ who made it. I ordered it straight away. It was WONDERFUL to have an Ubuntu phone! The privacy it offered was absolutely staggering. To date, I still have this phone and am using it.
J’ai un PinePhone. Pour ceux qui n’ont jamais entendu parler du PinePhone regardez pine64.com . C’est un téléphone Linux qui peut exécuter environ 20 OS Linux différents. Toutefois, il n’est pas vendu comme un téléphone prêt à utiliser, mais comme un mobile en développement. Jusqu’à ce que le logiciel soit parfait. Je vais expliquer pourquoi j’en ai acheté un.
Je n’aime pas les deux systèmes d’exploitation principaux avec lesquels les téléphones sont livrés. Il y a Android, qui est à Google et iOS, un produit d’Apple. Sur les deux, la protection de la vie privée est quasi inexistante. Il y a environ 9 ans, Ubuntu a estimé que le monde était prêt pour un téléphone sous Linux ; l’idée m’a passionné et j’en ai commandé un. Une société espagnole appelée BQ le fabriquait. Je l’ai commandé tout de suite. C’était FANTASTIQUE d’avoir un téléphone Ubuntu ! La protection de la vie privée y était absolument éblouissante. J’ai toujours ce téléphone aujourd’hui et je l’utilise encore.
I purchased my pine phone last year when I bought my new car for my retirement. It had a feature whereby it had a wireless phone charging app on the car. The salesman chatted about it and put my 9 year old phone on it. Now those of you with 9 year old phones will know that they don’t have wireless! But I didn’t know that at the time. Anyway, my attention was elsewhere! I drove the car back home with the phone on the wireless charging on (I didn’t know how to switch it off). When I got home I took the phone off and it was dead. I was puzzled by this, because everything about the phone was solid.
J’ai acheté mon PinePhone l’année dernière quand j’ai acheté une nouvelle voiture pour ma retraite. Cette voiture avait une appli qui chargeait les téléphones via le sans-fil. Le vendeur m’en a parlé et à mis mon téléphone de 9 ans dessus.
Bon, ceux d’entre vous qui avez des téléphones de 9 ans sauront qu’ils n’ont pas de chargeur sans-fil. Mais je ne le savais pas à l’époque. Quoi qu’il en soit, je faisais attention à autre chose ! J’ai conduit la voiture jusqu’à la maison tout en chargeant le téléphone via le sans-fil (je ne savais pas comment l’éteindre). Arrivé chez moi, j’ai récupéré le téléphone et il était mort. Cela m’a rendu perplexe, car le téléphone était très solide.
So I ordered a pine phone, which came with Manjaro OS, but I installed UBports, which was Ubuntu in all but name. Ubuntu had ceased to develop the OS for the mobile phone and UBports had stepped in to develop the phone. Those of you who have seen UBports will have (hopefully!) a good view of it. Anyway, the pine phone was not a daily phone even with UBports on it. So I looked at my old phone and discovered that it was just the battery that had gone. So I ordered another battery. When it came I fitted it and, hey presto, it all worked! So I was back to an Ubuntu phone.
J’ai donc commandé un PinePhone, qui était livré avec Manjaro OS, mais j’y ai installé UBports, qui était en fait Ubuntu, sans le nom. Ubuntu avait arrêté le développement d'un système d’exploitation pour téléphones mobiles et UBports avait pris le relais. Ceux qui ont vu UBports en auront (je l’espère!) une bonne opinion.
Quoi qu'il en soit, même avec UBports, le PinePhone n’était pas un téléphone quotidien. J’ai donc regardé mon vieux téléphone et j’ai découvert que seule la batterie était morte. J’ai donc commandé une autre batterie. À son arrivée, je l’ai mise dans le téléphone et hop, tout fonctionnait ! Ainsi, je suis revenu à un téléphone Ubuntu.
So I have kept my pine phone all this time looking at UBports website and the pine phone, but so far they have not yet cracked the software. So I decided to put KDE Plasma Mobile on it just to try it and see what had been achieved. This had been the mobile OS of choice for Pine64 and it was interesting to see it. However, one of my computers had given up the ghost, and so I bought a new one just a few months ago. It was a Windows computer to go with the Ubuntu computer that was my main computer. Then came Windows 11 which I put on it and it runs OK.
Tout en regardant le site Web d’UBports et le PinePhone, j’ai gardé celui-ci, mais, jusqu’ici, ils n’ont pas réussi à adapter le logiciel. J’ai donc décidé de mettre KDE Plasma Mobile dessus juste pour un essai et pour voir ce qui avait été accompli. Cela avait été l’OS mobile de choix sur Pine64 et c’était intéressant de le voir.
Cependant, l’un de mes ordinateurs était hors service et j’en ai acheté un nouveau il y a tout juste quelques mois. C’était un ordinateur Windows pour accompagner mon ordinateur principal, sous Ubuntu. Puis est arrivé Windows 11, que j'ai mis dessus ; l’ordinateur fonctionne convenablement.
Now, the last time I used my Ubuntu computer it was rather complex to put an OS on the pine phone, because it came with multiple drives. I didn’t want to go through that again. So I used Windows 11. I downloaded the KDE Plasma Mobile, also downloaded Balena Etcher for the flashing process. My Windows 11 computer is set up according to Rob Braxman’s new computer setup, which means that I have two users, one a local account, which I use regularly, and the admin account which I hardly ever use. I don’t use any anti virus, except for Microsoft’s own. That was going to be the problem. I did everything except turn off the anti virus, and this made Balena Etcher twitchy. It didn’t flash properly. I tried it again and once again, it didn’t work. But then something was wrong with my pine phone. It didn’t work. It was dead! So I got onto Pine64’s forums where I asked why this had happened and was it going to be fixable. I’ll cut the time spent (5 days!) down.
Bon. La dernière fois que j’ai utilisé mon ordi Ubuntu, c’était difficile de mettre un système d’exploitation sur le PinePhone, parce qu'il était livré avec des partitions multiples. Je ne voulais pas subir tout cela à nouveau. J’ai donc utilisé Windows 11. J’ai téléchargé KDE Plasma Mobile et Balena Etcher aussi, pour le processus de flashage. Mon ordinateur Windows 11 est configuré selon la nouvelle configuration de Rob Braxman, ce qui signifie que j’ai deux utilisateurs, l’un, un compte local utilisé régulièrement, et l'autre, le compte admin que je n’utilise guère. Je n’utilise aucun anti-virus à part celui de Microsoft. Cela allait être problématique.
J'ai tout fait sauf éteindre l'anti-virus, ce qui rendait Balena Etcher assez nerveux. Il n'a pas flashé comme il fallait. Je l'ai essayé à nouveau, et, à nouveau, cela n'a pas marché. Mais alors quelque chose clochait avec le PinePhone. Il ne fonctionnait plus, car il était mort ! Je suis donc allé sur les forums de Pine64 et j'ai demandé pourquoi cela est arrivé et est-ce que c'était réparable ? Je ne parle même pas du temps que j'y avais passé (5 jours !).
One thing that worked was Jumpdrive. This was a utility that allowed the eemc to be directly exposed to the flashing process. I had an SD card which ran Jumpdrive and the phone worked with it. But it didn’t offer the computer an emmc drive to which the computer wanted to flash it. Eventually, I got the SD card to be flashed by a mobile OS, KDE Mobile to be precise. This worked because the phone booted from it, but it was very slow. Then I discovered with the back off of the phone, that there was a reset button. I asked what it did and was told that it reset the hardware to factory settings. Oh wow! I immediately used the reset button and found that I could flash UB ports to the phone on eemc! So I did and now all is well. It’s so good that the pine phone has all these features and I’m very pleased with it.
Une chose qui fonctionnait était Jumpdrive, un utilitaire qui permettait à l’emmc d’être exposée directement au processus de flashage. J’avais une carte SD qui pouvait lancer Jumpdrive et le téléphone fonctionnait avec elle. Mais cela ne donnait pas à l’ordinateur un disque emmc vers lequel l’ordinateur voulait faire le flashage. J’ai enfin réussi à faire flasher la carte SD avec un système d’exploitation mobile, KDE mobile pour être précis. Cela a fonctionné, car le téléphone a démarré dessus, mais c’était très lent. Puis j’ai découvert que, derrière le couvercle sur le dos du phone, il y avait un bouton reset. J'ai demandé ce qu'il faisait et la réponse était qu'il réinitialisait le matériel aux réglages usine. Génial ! J’ai utilisé le bouton reset tout de suite et j’ai trouvé que je pouvais flasher UBports vers le téléphone sur le emmc !
Je l’ai fait et maintenant tout va bien. Les caractéristiques du PinePhone sont excellentes et il me plaît beaucoup.
