You Want Game Reviews? Just thought I'd inform you of a book/presentation I have been working on for the past couple of years as a side hobby. It covers roughly 400 games found in USC and Synaptic PM (none of the fatties, just the usual suspects). Couldn't publish it as an epub because it didn't fit formatting rules (over 800 pages and in PDF instead of docx or odf), so I packed it off to lulu.com as a cheap $1.50 book. In addition, due to included screenshots, it came in at over 15MB. There are about 550 games in USC, but some don't work or are actually old hangers on that have been given new names and posted elsewhere. I hit maybe about 60% of the games out there. Oh, and I should clarify that I did it via LibreOffice Impress, so it's one page containing a screenshot and one page with the URL, general info, and USC rating, if any. Je voudrais juste vous parler d'un livre/d'une présentation, que j'écris, depuis les deux dernières années, comme passe-temps. Il traite environ 400 jeux trouvés dans les GP USC (la Logithèque Ubuntu) et Synaptic (pas les gros, seulement les habituels).
Impossible de le publier comme publication électronique parce qu'il ne correspondait pas aux règles de mise en forme (plus de 800 pages et en PDF au lieu de docx ou odf), alors je l'ai posté à lulu.com comme un livre pas cher à 1,50 $. Qui plus est, en raison des captures d'écran, il fait plus de 15 Mo.
Il y a environ 550 jeux dans USC, mais certains ne fonctionnent pas ou sont vieux jeux (c'est le cas de le dire) qui ont été renommées et remises ailleurs. Je couvre peut-être environ 60 % des jeux de la Logithèque. Oh, et je dois préciser que je l'ai fait avec LibreOffice Impress, il y a donc une page contenant une capture d'écran et une page avec l'URL, des informations générales et la note USC, le cas échéant.

Quick DVD Backup May I suggest a trick that delivers a properly installed and clean Ubuntu – otherwise it could contain a lot of waste after repeated program installs and uninstalls. After installing an Ubuntu distribution with all necessary components and cleaning the surplus ones, I use the remastersys program to make a system backup ISO file, and burn it to a rewritable disk to make a Live DVD with username and password, but without personal data. This Live DVD could be used for experimental program installations, while using the same system as the one installed to the HDD. With 4 GB RAM, some 1.7 GB to 1.9 GB additional free space could be made available. This way, I can run tests without any risk of leaving any waste on my installed system since, after rebooting with the Live DVD, I have a clean system again. Based on the results of the tests, I can then be confident that the tested programs will also install and run correctly on the HDD system.

Puis-je suggérer un truc qui permet d'avoir une nouvelle installation d'Ubuntu propre et frâiche ? Sinon, on peut retrouver beaucoup de choses inutiles à la suite d'installations et de désinstallations répétées de logiciels.
Après avoir installé une distribution Ubuntu avec tous les composants nécessaires et supprimé ceux en trop, j'utilise le programme remastersys pour faire un fichier ISO de sauvegarde du système et je le grave sur un disque réinscriptible pour faire un DVD live avec identifiant et mot de passe, mais sans données personnelles.
Ce DVD live pourrait être utilisé pour l'installation de programmes expérimentaux, tout en utilisant le même système que celui installé sur le disque dur. Avec 4 Go de RAM, de 1,7 Go à 1,9 Go d'espace libre supplémentaire pourrait être mis à disposition.
De cette façon, je peux exécuter des tests sans risque de laisser des déchets sur mon système installé puisque, après avoir redémarré avec le DVD Live, j'ai un système à nouveau propre. Sur la base des résultats des tests, je peux alors être certain que les programmes testés s'installeront et se lanceront correctement sur le système du DD.
Using this approach, I can successfully try some Amateur Radio programs, both .deb extension Linux and .exe extension Windows ones (among them SSTV, PSK31, etc.). Moreover, I can surf the Internet without any risk of infection since the DVD is write protected and the RAM memory will be empty after shutting down the computer. If I download any file then it can be saved directly to a pen-drive or to an external HDD after checking it with the “Clamav” anti-virus program already installed on my Ubuntu operating system (and refreshing its database from the Internet). I was using an older computer without a built-in HDD, and the computer was used exclusively with a Ubuntu Live-CD and with a broadband internet connection. This was the less expensive computer I had! Avec cette approche, je peux essayer avec succès des programmes de radio amateur, ayant les deux extensions .deb pour Linux et .exe pour Windows (dont SSTV, PSK31, etc.)
De plus, je peux surfer sur Internet, sans aucun risque d'infection, car le DVD est protégé en écriture et la mémoire RAM sera vide après l'arrêt de l'ordinateur. Si je télécharge un fichier, il peut être enregistré directement sur une clé USB ou un disque dur externe après l'avoir vérifié avec l'anti-virus « Clamav » déjà installé sur mon système d'exploitation Ubuntu (et rafraîchissant sa base de données à partir d'Internet).
J'utilisais un ordinateur assez ancien sans disque dur intégré et l'ordinateur a été utilisé exclusivement avec un Ubuntu Live-CD et une connexion Internet haut débit. C'était l'ordinateur le moins cher que j'ai eu !

My Bad! Sort Of… I have to apologize for not sending in those reviews I promised, here’s the reason why. After I built my new pc system – moving from an AMD cpu to an Intel Ivy Bridge – I then installed 12.04 LTS, and, long story short, it was a complete disaster. Robin reported 12.04 instabilities on his blog a few weeks ago, at the time I was on a AMD 64-bit build and had no problems. The moment I switched to an Intel system it was problems galore with random freezes, crashes, etc from nautilus to firefox, chrome, gwibber – even the software center would crash! So, for a few weeks I could do nothing more than browse the web trying to figure out what was wrong before the system went crazy – and I had already given away the AMD system. Please post the solution to this (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/993187/comments/91) for people who may be experiencing the same problems with the latest Intel architecture. Je dois m'excuser pour ne pas avoir envoyé les analyses que j'avais promises ; en voici la raison. Après avoir construit mon nouveau PC (passant d'un CPU AMD à un Intel Ivy Bridge), j'ai ensuite installé la 12.04 LTS, et, bref, ce fut un désastre complet. Robin a parlé des instabilités de la 12.04 sur son blog il y a quelques semaines ; à l'époque, j'étais sur un AMD 64-bit et n'ai eu aucun problème. A partir du moment où je suis passé à Intel, il y a eu des problèmes à foison avec, au petit bonheur la chance, des gels, des crashs, etc, de nautilus, firefox, chrome, gwibber, même la Logithèque plantait ! Ainsi, pendant quelques semaines, je ne pouvais rien faire de plus que de naviguer sur le Web et essayer de comprendre ce qui n'allait pas avant que le système ne devienne fou ; je m'étais déjà débarrassé du système AMD. Unity, Mint and Tablets. Oh my! I have been using Linux Ubuntu for about 4 years and do not use a Windows dual boot. I do have a Windows machine for a couple of programs, but have “almost” managed to eliminate this necessity with Wine. I was using Ubuntu up to version 11.10 with the Classic login. The Classic login works on Laptops/Desktops, but you are stuck with Unity if you have a net-book. I have an Asus Netbook with 2GB RAM and a 250GB hard disk. I use this a lot while on the move, and got enticed to Linux Mint 12 from articles in other Linux magazines. I installed Mint on my netbook and it even recognized the extra touch-pad button to turn it on and off. Ubuntu did not recognize this button. I also installed Mint on two other high spec laptops and… so far so good. Now on to the Unity-Windows 8-Tablet debacle, so clearly described in the FCM60 article by Art Schreckengost. I can understand why Canonical is going the Unity route as this is the way Windows 8 is heading. It is aimed at tablets, touch-screen computers and TVs. I have an HTC Android mobile phone, which is great and very convenient, with its touch screen, but I cannot see myself swiping the screen of a laptop. On several trips to computer and mobile phone shops, I have checked out the non-Apple tablets on the market. The tablets on sale are very confusing as some have a USB port, some don't. Some have Bluetooth and some don't. They all have a reduced storage capacity and memory. Some are cheap but in general they are very expensive. As someone who is somewhat of a gadget freak, the tablet is one piece of technology that I have not rushed out to buy. Why buy a tablet, with reduced characteristics, when you can get a high spec netbook at a better price. My netbook does all that my laptops do, with the addition of an external DVD drive. J'utilise Ubuntu depuis environ quatre ans, sans Windows en double-amorçage. J'ai une machine Windows pour deux ou trois programmes, mais j'ai « presque » réussi à me défaire de Windows en utilisant Wine.
J'utilisais Ubuntu jusqu'à la version 11.10 avec une connexion Classic. La connexion Classic fonctionne sur les portables/le tours, mais, si vous avez un netbook, c'est Unity ou rien. J'ai un netbook Asus avec 2 Go de RAM et un disque dur de 250 Go. Je m'en sers beaucoup lors de mes déplacements et des articles dans d'autres magazines Linux m'ont convaincu d'essayer Linux Mint 12. J'ai installé Mint sur mon netbook et il a même reconnu le bouton supplémentaire du pavé tactile pour l'allumer et l'éteindre. Ubuntu n'a pas reconnu pas ce bouton. J'ai aussi installé Mint sur deux autres portables haut de gamme et … jusqu'ici, tout va bien.
Maintenant, en ce qui concerne la débâcle Unity-Windows8-les tablettes,si clairement décrite dans l'article par Art Schreckengost dans le FCM n°60 . Je peux comprendre pourquoi Canonical prend la route d'Unity, car Windows 8 semble prendre le même chemin. Ses cibles sont les tablettes, les ordinateurs à écran tactile et les téléviseurs. J'ai un téléphone portable HTC sous Android, qui est génial et très pratique avec son écran tactile, mais je ne peux pas m'imaginer en train d'utiliser mon doigt sur l'écran d'un portable. Au cours de plusieurs visites dans des magasins d'ordinateurs et de téléphonie mobile, j'ai jeté un œil à certaines tablettes non-Apple du marché. Les tablettes en vente sont très déroutantes, car certaines ont un port USB et d'autres pas. Certains ont Bluetooth et d'autres pas. Ils ont tous une capacité de stockage et une quantité de RAM réduites. Certaines ne coûtent pas cher, mais, en général, elles sont très, très chères. Bien que je sois quelqu'un qui adore les gadgets, je ne me suis pas précipité pour acheter une tablette. Pourquoi acheter une tablette, avec des spécifications réduites, quand vous pouvez obtenir un netbook haut de gamme à un meilleur prix ? Avec un lecteur de DVD externe, mon netbook fait tout ce que font mes portables. À mon avis, la tablette ne va pas rester sur le marché longtemps
