Using Photoshop plugins in Gamp Many of you may not know it, but GIMP supports a large number of photoshop plugins, both in the Windows and Linux versions, thanks to this wonderful tool called PSPI. Now, let’s see how to use it and what we can do with our new toy; paying nothing, of course! Getting Started First we need to install WINE on our Linux box (In Ubuntu, look for the WINE package in Synaptic), then we’ll need GIMP and PSPI, of course. We also need at least one Photoshop plugin. To get started and I downloaded two plugins, one commercial and one freeware. The first one is Designer Sextet from the company Flaming Pear and for the second plugin, the freeware one, I’ve chosen Caravaggio from Xero Graphics.
Utiliser les greffons Photoshop dans Gimp Beaucoup d'entre vous l'ignorent peut-être, mais Gimp supporte un large nombre de greffons Photoshop, aussi bien dans sa version Linux que dans sa version Windows. Ceci grâce à un merveilleux outil appelé PSPI. Voyons maintenant comment l'utiliser et comment nous pouvons nous amuser avec notre nouveau jouet. Sans rien payer bien sûr ! Préliminaires Nous devons commencer par installer Wine sur notre machine Linux (Sous Ubuntu, cherchez le package Wine à l'aide de Synaptic) et ensuite nous aurons bien sûr besoin de Gimp et de PSPI. Nous devons également disposer d'au moins un greffon Photoshop. Pour débuter, j'en ai téléchargé deux : un commercial et un libre. Le premier est Designer Sextet édité par Flaming Pear et pour le second, celui qui est libre, j'ai choisi Caravaggio de Xero Graphics.
Installing PSPI and*Photoshop plugins Now it is time to install PSPI on your GIMP. The following is an extract from the PSPI site: 'The Linux packages include three files: README.linux pspi, a small shell script pspi.exe.so, the binary that wine runs' Copy pspi and pspi.exe.so to your personal GIMP plug-ins folder, typically ~/.gimp-2.2/plug-ins . When you run GIMP it will issue a warning “wire_read(): error” as pspi.exe.so can’t be started directly. (The pspi script can, though, and is from GIMP’s point of view a GIMP plug-in.) This warning is harmless (GIMP just ignores that file then), but if you want to avoid it, move pspi.exe.so somewhere else and modify the pspi script to point to its new location instead. After starting GIMP, go to the Xtns:Photoshop Plug-in Settings and enter the folder where you are going to keep the 3rd-party Photoshop plug-ins (.8bf files) that you want to use in GIMP.
Installer PSPI et les greffons Photoshop
Maintenant il est temps d'installer PSPI sur votre Gimp. Voici un extrait de la documentation sur le site PSPI :
« Le package Linux inclut trois fichiers : README.Linux, pspi (un petit script shell) et pspi.exe.so (les binaires qui s'exécutent avec Wine). » Copiez pspi et pspi.exe.so dans votre répertoire personnel de greffons Gimp, typiquement ~/.gimp-2.2/plug-ins.
Quand vous lancerez Gimp vous aurez un avertissement « wire_read() : error » car pspi.exe.so ne peut pas être démarré directement (le script pspi le peut, lui, et est considéré par Gimp comme un greffon utilisable). Cet avertissement n'est pas important (Gimp se contente d'ignorer le fichier) mais si vous voulez l'éviter, déplacez pspi.exe.so et modifiez le script pour le faire pointer vers le nouvel emplacement.
Après avoir démarré Gimp rendez-vous dans le menu Filtres > Photoshop Plugin Settings et ajoutez le répertoire où vous aller ranger les greffons Photoshop que vous souhaitez utiliser avec Gimp (fichiers .8bf).
Preferably you should use an empty folder for this, and then install (copy) Photoshop plug-ins there one by one, verifying that each works. It isn’t really useful to rush and install a great deal of Photoshop plug-ins at once and assume they all will work under pspi. So I did what they wrote in the instructions and also copied my freshly downloaded PS Plugins to a folder in my home that I called ~/.gimp-2.2/psplugins. Remember that this GIMP folder we are referring to is a hidden folder, therefore, you’ll have to set your file browser so that it shows hidden files. In my case, I use GNOME and Nautilus. I can see hidden files by using the Nautilus menu View > Show hidden files.
Vous devriez, de préférence, utiliser un répertoire vide et y installer les greffons un par un (en les copiant) en vérifiant à chaque fois qu'ils fonctionnent. Il n'est pas vraiment utile de se précipiter et d'installer une masse de greffons en une seule fois en supposant qu'ils vont tous fonctionner avec PSPI. J'ai donc suivi les instructions du site et copier mes greffons fraîchement téléchargés dans un répertoire de mon home : ~/.gimp-2.2/psplugins.
Souvenez vous que le répertoire auquel nous nous référons est un répertoire caché, vous devrez donc paramétrer votre explorateur de fichiers pour qu'il puisse l'afficher. J'utilise Gnome et Nautilus et je peux afficher les fichiers cachés avec Affichage > Afficher les fichiers cachés (ctrl + h).
Setting The GIMP UP As the guide says, I start GIMP and it hangs up for some seconds analyzing the newly installed plugin: But once GIMP is loaded I get no error message as expected (The PSPI guide suggested that an error may have occurred but I didn’t see any). All works fine for now. Proceeding with the settings, I open the GIMP Menu Xtns > Photoshop Plug-in Settings and this window shows up: Hit the New button (In my screenshot it is the white sheet of paper with an orange star over it, on the upper left corner of the above screenshot) and choose the path where you put your Photoshop plugins. In my case we saw that it is /home/darkmaster/.gimp-2.2/psplugins. Push the OK button and a message will appear warning you that the new plugins will be loaded next time you restart The GIMP.
Paramétrer les préférences utilisateur
Comme indiqué dans la documentation, Gimp marque un temps d'arrêt au démarrage pour analyser le nouveau greffon. Mais une fois le chargement terminé, je n'obtiens pas de message d'erreur comme je m'y attendais (la documentation suggérait cette possibilité). Jusque là, tout va bien. Pour effectuer les réglages, je vais dans Filtres > Photoshop Plugin Settings et cette fenêtre apparaît :
Cliquez sur Nouveau (sur la capture d'écran, la page blanche avec une étoile orange dans le coin supérieur gauche) et choisissez l'endroit où vous voulez stocker vos greffons Photoshop (
: on l'a pas déjà fait ça ?). Dans mon cas : /home/darkmaster/.gimp-2.2/psplugins.
Cliquez sur OK, et un message vous informe que les greffons seront chargés au prochain démarrage de Gimp.
Testing the new PS Plugins To complete the operation I close and then reopen The GIMP. Even now I don’t get any error message. I then load an image from my HDD and then click on the Filters menu. The plugins are at the bottom of the menu. Let’s test them! Will they work? I start with Flaming Pear > Aetherize and… wow it works! Here’s a screenshot! Now it’s Caravaggio’s turn and wow, it works too! Another screenshot for the press: This is the result of applying the Caravaggio filter (right) Now doesn’t that look like a real painting? This Caravaggio plugin is excellent and it’s freeware.
Test des nouveaux greffons
Pour terminer l'opération, je ferme et redémarre Gimp. Même maintenant je n'obtiens pas de message d'erreur. J'ouvre une image depuis mon disque dur et j'ouvre le menu Filtres. Les greffons sont situés en bas de celui-ci.
Essayons-les ! Marchera, marchera pas ? Je commence par Flaming Pear > Aetherize et… ouais ! Ça marche ! Voici une capture d'écran :
Maintenant, au tour de Caravaggio et, champagne ! ça marche aussi ! Une autre capture pour la bonne bouche :
C'est le résultat de l'utilisation de Caravaggio (à droite).
Est-ce qu'on ne dirait pas un véritable tableau ? Ce greffon est excellent et il est gratuit.
Conclusions So I tested two random Photoshop plugins from around the net and two of two worked. Guess there’s a very high compatibility thanks to Wine getting better and better with each release.. What can I say now? Enjoy, and say goodbye to one of the most deprecated defects of GIMP, the lack of good and professional plugins! If you have the money, you can buy and use serious plugins like those from Alien Skin in Linux with The GIMP and PSPI now! Rating and Credits Ok, it's not a review but none the less I rate this PSPI extension for GIMP as a 5 out of 5, it does what it promises to do and it adds vital functionalities to The GIMP. Conclusion
J'ai donc essayé deux greffons Photoshop trouvés sur la toile, et les deux ont fonctionné. La compatibilité semble donc très bonne, grâce à Wine qui s'améliore sans cesse à chaque nouvelle version. Que dire de plus ? Amusez-vous et dites adieu à l'un des défauts les plus saillants de Gimp : le manque de bons greffons de niveau professionnel ! Si vous en avez les moyens, vous pouvez maintenant acheter des greffons de qualité comme ceux d'Alien Skin et les utiliser sous Linux avec Gimp et PSPI.
