What is screencast? It is actually the digital recording of the computer screen, often with an associated audio. Why would we like to do this? Sounds like a good question. Well, often we need to record the screen to make a tutorial, or record a problem that we are having. There are many programs that can be used for this purpose such as gtk-recordmydesktop, recorditnow, xvidcap, etc. But, out of all the above, my personal favorite is gtk-recordmydesktop. In this article I will explain how to use it to do a screencast. I would also like to point out that I currently use Ubuntu 10.04 on a 64-bit machine. Installing the Software Recordmydesktop can be downloaded from the Ubuntu software center.
Qu'est-ce que le screencast? C'est en fait l'enregistrement numérique de l'écran de l'ordinateur, souvent avec une piste audio associée. Pourquoi voudrions-nous faire cela ? C'est une bonne question. Eh bien, souvent nous avons besoin d'enregistrer l'écran pour faire un tutoriel ou d'enregistrer un problème que nous avons. Il existe de nombreux programmes qui peuvent être utilisés à cet effet tels que gtk-recordmydesktop, recorditnow, xvidcap, etc., mais, dans tout ce qui précède, mon préféré est gtk-recordmydesktop. Dans cet article je vais vous expliquer comment l'utiliser pour faire un screencast. Je voudrais aussi faire remarquer que j'utilise actuellement Ubuntu 10.04 sur une machine 64-bit.
Installation du logiciel
recordmydesktop peut être téléchargé à partir de la Logithèque Ubuntu.
Knowhow of the Software Recordmydesktop can be found in Applications>Accessories>Sound & Video. The layout of the software is quite plain. On the left-hand side, there is a screen which shows the current area which will be recorded. On the right-hand side, we have options to control the video and sound quality. The recording will take up more space if we use higher sound and video quality. On the bottom left-hand corner, we have two options which are 'Select window' and 'Record'. With the first, we can select the area on the screen which we want to record, while the second option will start the recording. On the bottom right-hand side, we have two options, namely 'SaveAs' and 'Quit' - to save our recording, and exit the software. Now, let us explore the 'Advanced' features of this software by clicking on that tab. There are four tabs, and we will cover each one of them one by one:
Connaissance du Logiciel
Recordmydesktop peut être trouvé dans Applications>Accessoires>Son & Vidéo. La mise en page du logiciel est assez sombre. Sur le côté gauche, il y a un écran qui montre la zone actuelle, qui sera enregistrée. Sur le côté droit, nous avons des options pour contrôler la qualité visuelle et sonore. L'enregistrement prendra plus d'espace si l'on utilise une meilleure qualité de son et de vidéo. Dans le coin en bas à gauche, nous avons deux options qui sont « Select window » et « Record ». Avec la première, on peut sélectionner la zone sur l'écran que nous voulons enregistrer, tandis que la deuxième option va commencer l'enregistrement. En bas à droite, nous avons deux options, à savoir « SaveAs » et « Quit » pour sauver notre enregistrement et quitter le logiciel.
Maintenant, explorons les fonctionnalités « Advanced » de ce logiciel en cliquant sur cet onglet. Il y a quatre onglets et nous allons examiner chacun d'eux un par un :
Files Under this tab, the first option controls the overwriting of existing files. By default, if we try to save a file by a name that already exists, then the new file will be renamed. If we checkmark this box, then this functionality will be disabled. Assume we don't want that, and hence we won't check the box. The next option specifies where the working directory is, ie, where the recordings will be saved. We can easily change this option if we want. Performance In this tab, the first option ‘Frames per second’ is self explanatory. The second option lets you encode the video simultaneously while recording, but this will also require a lot more processing power. The third option is checkmarked by default - which means that no compression is done to our recording. The fourth option, if enabled, will reduce the processing power required but may make the recording a bit blurry. The last option should be enabled only while recording 3D windows. Sound In this tab, the first option lets us specify the number of audio channels. The second option sets the sound frequency. The third is set to 'default', which means that the device is discovered by the software automatically. I would not recommend tampering much with settings in this tab.
Fichiers Sous cet onglet, la première option contrôle l'écrasement de fichiers existants. Par défaut, si nous essayons d'enregistrer un fichier avec un nom qui existe déjà, le nouveau fichier sera renommé. Si nous cochons cette case, cette fonctionnalité sera désactivée. Supposons que nous ne voulons pas sa désactivation et, dans ce cas, nous ne cocherons pas la case. L'option suivante indique l'endroit où le répertoire de travail se trouve, c'est-à-dire, là où les enregistrements seront sauvegardés. Nous pouvons facilement changer cette option si nous le voulons.
Performance
Sous cet onglet, la première option « Frames per second », images par seconde, est explicite. La deuxième option vous permet d'encoder la vidéo pendant l'enregistrement, mais cela nécessitera également beaucoup plus de puissance de traitement. La troisième option est cochée par défaut, ce qui signifie qu'aucune compression ne s'appliquera à notre enregistrement. La quatrième option, si elle est activée, permettra de réduire la puissance de traitement requise, mais peut rendre l'enregistrement un peu flou. La dernière option doit être activée uniquement lors de l'enregistrement des fenêtres 3D.
Le son
Sous cet onglet, la première option nous permet de spécifier le nombre de canaux audio. La deuxième option règle la fréquence du son. La troisième est fixée à « default », ce qui signifie que le périphérique est découvert par le logiciel automatiquement. Je ne recommanderais pas vraiment de changer les paramètres souss cet onglet.
Misc I would recommend once again not to change the default options in this tab. But you may change the type of mouse cursor. If the Follow Mouse option is enabled, then the recording area will follow the mouse. Using the software Run the software. Then click on the 'Select Window', select the appropriate recording area, and then start the recording. On the Ubuntu top panel (one where the time is displayed), you will see a circular red object - which you can click to end the recording, or right-click it to pause the recording. Once you stop the recording, you will see a window which is doing encoding as shown in figure-3; don't close it. Then you will be asked where you want to save the video. Hurray! Now go and enjoy your first video recording or screencast!
Divers
Je recommanderais une fois de plus de ne pas modifier les options par défaut sous cet onglet. Mais vous pouvez changer le type de curseur de la souris. Si l'option Follow Mouse est activée, la zone d'enregistrement suivra la souris.
Utilisation du logiciel
Lancez le logiciel, puis cliquez sur « Select Window », sélectionnez la zone d'enregistrement appropriée, puis lancer l'enregistrement. Sur le panneau supérieur Ubuntu (celui où l'heure est affichée), vous verrez un objet circulaire rouge sur lequel vous pouvez cliquer pour terminer l'enregistrement, ou cliquez droit dessus pour faire une pause de l'enregistrement. Une fois que vous avez arrêté l'enregistrement, vous verrez une fenêtre qui fait l'encodage comme le montre la figure 3 - ne la fermez pas. Puis il vous sera demandé où vous souhaitez enregistrer la vidéo. Hourra ! Maintenant, allez profiter de votre premier enregistrement vidéo ou screencast !
