 When I read the magazine, I became exposed to Ubuntu 9.10, Karmic Koala. It sounded so good, as if it was exactly what I was looking for. As a result, I got very excited, took it home, and to my surprise had such an easy time installing it to my PC that I decided to run it along with Windows XP as a dual boot system. All I did was put the live CD in the drive and the instructions were step-by-step—you would have to be pretty slow to not understand how to set things up.

 Since then, I have been very satisfied with Ubuntu in general, and I have been able to check out later versions of it from 10.04 to 12.04.

+Cette histoire commence au début de 2010. À cette époque, j'étais fauché ; j'essayais donc de trouver un système d'exploitation gratuit. J'avais besoin de quelque chose qui pouvait tourner sur les PC chez moi. J'avais fait des recherches sur le Net, mais n'ai rien trouvé d'utile pendant longtemps. Toutefois, un jour je me trouvais chez Barnes and Noble [Ndt : une grande librairie] et j'ai vu une revue pour Linux. Bien qu'ayant entendu parler de Linux auparavant, je ne le considérais jamais comme quelque chose que je saurais utiliser. Quand j'ai demandé à des connaissances, des professionnels de l'informatique, on m'a dit que c'était pour les experts et difficile à utiliser. Je n'ai jamais entendu quoi que ce soit de positif à son sujet. Je suis vraiment étonné de ne pas l'avoir découvert plus tôt.
+Lors de la lecture de la revue, Ubuntu 9.10, Karmic Koala me fut présenté. Il avait l'air vraiment bien, comme si c'était exactement ce que je cherchais.  I posted a help call in Ubuntu FB twice, and suddenly some Chinese fellow told me to re-compile the Kernel to an older version. A bit of a blur, I Google up the Kernel version. I got the answer that it’s an older version of Ubuntu version 10.04. I reposted my question to the Chinese fellow and he told me that it’s the only way to get my laptop running and speaking to me. Well, if that’s the solution to end my sleepless nights and nightmare, let it be.

I knew my laptop was trying to speak to me. Back to combing through Ubuntu Support forum again. I got a suggestion to upgrade the ALSA and Realtek drivers to the latest versions.

Quelqu'un d'autre a sans doute fait les mêmes choses que moi et pourrait me donner les bonnes réponses, non ? C'était le cinquième jour depuis le début de mon aventure avec Ubuntu. Des nuits blanches à parcourir minutieusement le Net et le Forum support Ubuntu pour une réponse. Ni la modification des fichiers de configuration, ni la mise à jour des pilotes, ni l'installation de nouveaux paquets, rien n'y a fait grand chose.
+Par deux fois, j'ai demandé de l'aide sur la page Facebook d'Ubuntu et, tout d'un coup, un gars chinois m'a dit de recompiler le noyau vers une version antérieure. Assez flou pour moi, je cherche la version du noyau sur Google et la réponse est que c'est une version plus ancienne, la 10.04. J'ai renvoyé ma question au Chinois et il m'a répondu que c'était la seule façon de faire fonctionner mon portable. Bien. Si c'est la seule solution pour mettre un terme à mes nuits blanches et mes cauchemars, ainsi soit-il.
+J'ai récupéré Ubuntu 10.04 LTS et nous étions prêts pour un ultime bras de fer ! S'il ne fonctionne pas cette fois-ci, je risque de me porter disparue à nouveau ! À la fin de l'installation, j'ai redémarré mon portable et, en attendant, j'ai utilisé ma vieille machine pour rechercher d'autres réponses en ligne. Il a démarré tout suite dans l'interface graphique, avec de magnifiques couleurs, mais aucun son de mon Altec Lansing. J'ai branché le port son et j'arrivais à entendre une musique douce. Je savais que mon portable essayait de me parler. Encore des recherches minutieuses sur les forums Ubuntu. J'ai reçu la suggestion de mettre à niveau les pilotes ALSA et Realtek vers les versions les plus récentes.

 After a few more days of toying and playing with the system, I got my Ubuntu to look like a Mac OSX! How cool is that? WAY COOL I say! I managed to post on Twitter, FB, chats, emails, played a few simple small games, and it all worked just fine. All the while, the system never hung or froze like my old laptop, which was pretty annoying. Linux, it’s so good to see you again my old friend. There you are. I am glad that I haven’t lost all of my Linux touch yet!
 I have now upgraded to 12.04. Some bugs in Gnome are still fighting inside with Unity, and it’s a work-in-process to find a fix now.

+J'ai redémarré et alors mon nouveau portable a émis des sons ! Il m'appelait, me parlait ! WOUAH ! c'était le plus beau son émis par mon portable Altec Lansing depuis son achat la semaine précédente. Pendant le démarrage, il est allé tout de suite dans l'interface graphique. Puis, j'ai vérifié la résolution de l'écran, la webcam, la connexion USB, le WIFI et TOUT était PARFAIT ! En m'aventurant plus avant dans le système Ubuntu, je me sentais enfin en paix ! C'était déjà le septième jour et j'ai pu dormir tranquillement cette nuit-là. Je me sentais heureuse et pleine de joie que mon voyage se soit enfin bien terminé.
+Après quelques jours de plus passés à m'amuser et à jouer avec le système, j'ai réussi à faire ressembler mon Ubuntu à MacOSX ! Eh, beh, c'est pas génial, ça ? SUPER. SUPER génial, je pense ! J'ai réussi à envoyer des tweets, des messages sur Facebook et des mails, à tchater, à jouer à quelques petits jeux simples et tout fonctionnait très bien. Pendant tout cela, le système ne s'est jamais planté comme mon ancien portable, ce qui m'irritait un max. Linux, cela me fait du bien de te revoir, mon vieil ami. Te voilà. Je suis contente de pouvoir être encore à l'aise avec Linux !
+J'ai maintenant fait la mise à niveau vers la 12.04. Quelques bogues dans Gnome se battent toujours à l'intérieur avec Unity et c'est un travail sans fin de trouver des solutions actuellement.
