This story begins at the beginning of 2010. I was broke at the time, so I was trying to find a free operating system. I needed something that could run on my PCs at home. I had searched on the Internet, but found nothing useful for a long time. But one day I was at Barnes and Noble, and I saw a magazine for Linux. Although I had heard of Linux before, I never thought of it as something I would ever be able to use. When I asked people whom I knew were computer professionals, I was told it was for people who were experts, and it was difficult to use. I never heard anything positive about it. I am so amazed that I hadn’t came across it sooner. When I read the magazine, I became exposed to Ubuntu 9.10, Karmic Koala. It sounded so good, as if it was exactly what I was looking for. As a result, I got very excited, took it home, and to my surprise had such an easy time installing it to my PC that I decided to run it along with Windows XP as a dual boot system. All I did was put the live CD in the drive and the instructions were step-by-step—you would have to be pretty slow to not understand how to set things up. Since then, I have been very satisfied with Ubuntu in general, and I have been able to check out later versions of it from 10.04 to 12.04. Anthony Venable

Cette histoire commence au début de 2010. À cette époque, j'étais fauché ; j'essayais donc de trouver un système d'exploitation gratuit. J'avais besoin de quelque chose qui pouvait tourner sur les PC chez moi. J'avais fait des recherches sur le Net, mais n'ai rien trouvé d'utile pendant longtemps. Toutefois, un jour je me trouvais chez Barnes and Noble [Ndt : une grande librairie] et j'ai vu une revue pour Linux. Bien qu'ayant entendu parler de Linux auparavant, je ne le considérais jamais comme quelque chose que je saurais utiliser. Quand j'ai demandé à des connaissances, des professionnels de l'informatique, on m'a dit que c'était pour les experts et difficile à utiliser. Je n'ai jamais entendu quoi que ce soit de positif à son sujet. Je suis vraiment étonné de ne pas l'avoir découvert plus tôt.

Lors de la lecture de la revue, Ubuntu 9.10, Karmic Koala me fut présenté. Il avait l'air vraiment bien, comme si c'était exactement ce que je cherchais. Par conséquent, cela m'a enthousiasmé, je l'ai ramené à la maison et, à ma surprise, n'ai eu aucun problème quand je l'ai installé sur mon PC ; c'est pourquoi j'ai décidé de le mettre en double amorçage à côté de Windows XP. Tout ce que j'ai fait, a été de mettre le Live CD dans le lecteur et les instructions étant du genre étape-par-étape, il fallait être vraiment très lent pour ne pas comprendre comment tout paramétrer.

En général, depuis ce temps, Ubuntu m'a pleinement satisfait et j'ai même pu en essayer des versions ultérieures de la 10.04 à la 12.04.

The day I got my brand new Compaq laptop from my local tech shopping mall, I bought some blank CDs to do some burning of the Ubuntu OS. I had also done a little bit of reading about installing Ubuntu before that. It was, errrr, a nightmare revisited! Firstly, my friend Faizal recommended that I install the Netbook version 10.10—without knowing that it should be for netbook, not laptop! I went through the installation process, and… BAMM! Display resolution all wrong; no sound; no nothing! I was, like, OMG, here I go again! When I related my terrible nightmare to Faizal, he said it could be a version problem. Netbooks have limited support in terms of hardware. I was, like, ok, yeah, that makes sense to me. I proceeded to install the Desktop version 10.10, and, BAMM again—another display resolution all wrong, still no sound, I got the X Server bootup problem but it wouldn’t auto boot to GUI.

Le jour où j'ai récupéré mon tout nouveau portable Compaq au centre commercial informatique local, j'ai acheté quelques CD vierges pour pouvoir graver le système d'exploitation Ubuntu. Auparavant, j'avais fait un peu de lecture au sujet de l'installation d'Ubuntu. C'était… comment dire… un vrai cauchemar !

Premièrement, mon ami Faizal m'a recommandé d'installer la 10.10 en version netbook, sans savoir que c'était vraiment pour un netbook et non pas pour un portable. J'ai fait toute l'installation, puis… BADABOOM ! Résolution d'écran vraiment affreuse ; pas de son ; rien du tout ! Et voilà que ça recommençait - j'étais effondrée !

Quand j'ai raconté ce cauchemar à Faizal, il m'a dit qu'il pouvait s'agir d'un problème de version. Le matériel des netbooks est assez peu pris en charge. Bon, d'accord, mais, pour moi, ça n'a aucun sens. J'ai alors installé la 10.10 en version desktop et, à nouveau, BADABOOM : encore une résolution affreuse, toujours pas de son, j'ai eu le problème X server au démarrage et il refusait de démarrer sur l'interface graphique.

I combed through the Ubuntu support forum online, looking for answers and solutions. Perhaps someone out there has done it before, and has the answers I am looking for? It had been the 5th day since I started my venture with Ubuntu. Sleepless nights—digging the internet and the Ubuntu Support Forum for an answer. No luck in my editing of configuration files, driver updates, or new packages installation. I posted a help call in Ubuntu FB twice, and suddenly some Chinese fellow told me to re-compile the Kernel to an older version. A bit of a blur, I Google up the Kernel version. I got the answer that it’s an older version of Ubuntu version 10.04. I reposted my question to the Chinese fellow and he told me that it’s the only way to get my laptop running and speaking to me. Well, if that’s the solution to end my sleepless nights and nightmare, let it be. I got Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, and ready for a final showdown! It has to work this time or I might go MIA again! After the installation ended, I rebooted my laptop and waited a while as I searched for more possible answers online with my old laptop. It booted straight into GUI with beautiful colors but no sound coming from my Altec Lansing. I tried plugging in the sound port, and I could hear soft music. I knew my laptop was trying to speak to me. Back to combing through Ubuntu Support forum again. I got a suggestion to upgrade the ALSA and Realtek drivers to the latest versions.

J'ai scrupuleusement dépouillé les forums Ubuntu en ligne, à la recherche de réponses et de solutions. Quelqu'un d'autre a sans doute fait les mêmes choses que moi et pourrait me donner les bonnes réponses, non ? C'était le cinquième jour depuis le début de mon aventure avec Ubuntu. Des nuits blanches à parcourir minutieusement le Net et le Forum support Ubuntu pour une réponse. Ni la modification des fichiers de configuration, ni la mise à jour des pilotes, ni l'installation de nouveaux paquets, rien n'y a fait grand chose.

Par deux fois, j'ai demandé de l'aide sur la page Facebook d'Ubuntu et, tout d'un coup, un gars chinois m'a dit de recompiler le noyau vers une version antérieure. Assez flou pour moi, je cherche la version du noyau sur Google et la réponse est que c'est une version plus ancienne, la 10.04. J'ai renvoyé ma question au Chinois et il m'a répondu que c'était la seule façon de faire fonctionner mon portable. Bien. Si c'est la seule solution pour mettre un terme à mes nuits blanches et mes cauchemars, ainsi soit-il.

J'ai récupéré Ubuntu 10.04 LTS et nous étions prêts pour un ultime bras de fer ! S'il ne fonctionne pas cette fois-ci, je risque de me porter disparue à nouveau ! À la fin de l'installation, j'ai redémarré mon portable et, en attendant, j'ai utilisé ma vieille machine pour rechercher d'autres réponses en ligne. Il a démarré tout suite dans l'interface graphique, avec de magnifiques couleurs, mais aucun son de mon Altec Lansing. J'ai branché le port son et j'arrivais à entendre une musique douce. Je savais que mon portable essayait de me parler. Encore des recherches minutieuses sur les forums Ubuntu. J'ai reçu la suggestion de mettre à niveau les pilotes ALSA et Realtek vers les versions les plus récentes.

I rebooted and then a sound came from my new laptop! It was calling, talking to me! I was, like, OMG! It was the most beautiful sound coming from my new Altec Lansing laptop since I had bought it a week previously. As it booted up, it continued to go straight into the GUI. Then I double-checked the display resolution, webcam, USB connection, WIFI, and it was ALL PERFECT! As I started to venture around the Ubuntu system, I finally felt at peace! It was already on the 7th day that I was able to sleep a silent night. I felt happiness and joy that my journey of the re-entry has been completed. After a few more days of toying and playing with the system, I got my Ubuntu to look like a Mac OSX! How cool is that? WAY COOL I say! I managed to post on Twitter, FB, chats, emails, played a few simple small games, and it all worked just fine. All the while, the system never hung or froze like my old laptop, which was pretty annoying. Linux, it’s so good to see you again my old friend. There you are. I am glad that I haven’t lost all of my Linux touch yet! I have now upgraded to 12.04. Some bugs in Gnome are still fighting inside with Unity, and it’s a work-in-process to find a fix now. J'ai redémarré et alors mon nouveau portable a émis des sons ! Il m'appelait, me parlait ! WOUAH ! c'était le plus beau son émis par mon portable Altec Lansing depuis son achat la semaine précédente. Pendant le démarrage, il est allé tout de suite dans l'interface graphique. Puis, j'ai vérifié la résolution de l'écran, la webcam, la connexion USB, le WIFI et TOUT était PARFAIT ! En m'aventurant plus avant dans le système Ubuntu, je me sentais enfin en paix ! C'était déjà le septième jour et j'ai pu dormir tranquillement cette nuit-là. Je me sentais heureuse et pleine de joie que mon voyage se soit enfin bien terminé.

Après quelques jours de plus passés à m'amuser et à jouer avec le système, j'ai réussi à faire ressembler mon Ubuntu à MacOSX ! Eh, beh, c'est pas génial, ça ? SUPER. SUPER génial, je pense ! J'ai réussi à envoyer des tweets, des messages sur Facebook et des mails, à tchater, à jouer à quelques petits jeux simples et tout fonctionnait très bien. Pendant tout cela, le système ne s'est jamais planté comme mon ancien portable, ce qui m'irritait un max. Linux, cela me fait du bien de te revoir, mon vieil ami. Te voilà. Je suis contente de pouvoir être encore à l'aise avec Linux !

J'ai maintenant fait la mise à niveau vers la 12.04. Quelques bogues dans Gnome se battent toujours à l'intérieur avec Unity et c'est un travail sans fin de trouver des solutions actuellement.
