 People who have had enough of the problems encountered with word processors, especially Microsoft Word, have found LaTeX to be much easier to use, and a more productive, stable method. At the same time that I am writing this, two researchers from Germany published a paper comparing Latex to Microsoft Word. Their findings favoured Microsoft Word for efficiency, but not only that: the two authors of the paper suggested that researchers at universities be prevented from using Latex. Many scholars weighed in on this strange conclusion and found the study to be flawed, if not manipulated, to favour Word.**

+Il y a quarante ans, quand je faisais encore des études universitaires, j'aurais cru que j'étais mort et au paradis si j'avais pu écrire mes dissertations avec LaTeX. Au cours des ans, j'ai fait des essais avec LaTeX, mais ce n'est qu'après avoir terminé un projet de diapos sur vidéoprojecteur utilisant LaTeX sur mon Raspberry Pi que je me suis rendu compte de la grande puissance de LaTeX, sans grands coûts. Actuellement, j'utilise LaTeX aussi souvent que possible en abandonnant LibreOffice presque complètement. Je dois avouer qu'il y a des trucs qui sont beaucoup plus faciles à faire dans LibreOffice que dans LaTeX, mais le produit final de LaTeX reste nettement meilleur.
+La communauté LaTeX est un bon exemple du mouvement FOSS. En un sens, elle a rendu cet article difficile à faire, car il y a tant d'aide valable sur le Net.

+•  Il n'y a pas de méta-données dans un fichier LaTeX. Cela peut être critique dans certains environnements de travail.
+•  J'ai vu de nombreux témoignages favorables à LaTeX venant d'étudiants qui, après des années de MS Word, ont changé pour LaTeX afin d'écrire leur thèse à l'université.
+•  Oubliez Powerpoint : la classe de documents « Beamer » (vidéoprojecteur) dans LaTeX crée d'excellentes diapositives. Sauvegardez-le en format PDF et présentez-le n'importe où. J'ai vu assez de présentations Powerpoint bâclées parce que le présentateur ne savait pas vraiment utiliser l'application.

+Quiconque a fait du codage en HTML trouvera LaTeX beaucoup plus facile à apprendre que ceux qui n'en ont pas fait, ou qui ont créé de l'HTML uniquement dans un éditeur WYSIWYG.
+Pour l'installer, il vaut mieux aller à la Logithèque Ubuntu et installer TeX Live. Si vous voulez être à la pointe de TeX, vous pouvez installer TeX Live à partir du Tex Users Group.  There are three LaTeX editors that I have liked: LaTexila, TexMaker, and the text editor Geany with LaTeX extensions. LaTeXila would be a good choice to get your feet wet as it looks like many text editors that you have used before. TexMaker looks confusing and complicated, but after you get adjusted to the wide selection of buttons and menus, it is an easy program to use as well. Geany worked well on my Raspberry Pi. You may have to install “latexmk” to get LaTeXzila to run.**

+Il faut sélectionner un éditeur de texte LaTeX pour créer des documents LaTeX. Vous en trouverez beaucoup dans Synaptic ou la Logithèque Ubuntu, et je ne me hasarderais pas à en recommander un de peur de représailles.
+Je préfère tout éditeur ayant des menus déroulants listés de façon logique - le code de formatage nécessaire pour créer des documents. LaTeX est un environnement énorme et des tonnes de code existent. Puisque nous sommes en train d'apprendre, c'est utile de pouvoir voir le code dont nous avons besoin. Une visionneuse intégrée qui affichera le document tel qu'il sera imprimé est aussi très utile.

 Before you write your first LaTeX document, one initial bit of advice: always create a folder for the document that you are working on and keep all of the files related to the document in it. This will serve you well when you try more complex documents. Go get your feet wet, and we will come back to this next issue.
