Q I have tried to do a 1:1 copy of a CD to a RW blank CD. Both failures.
A Rip the CD to .wav files, using a program such as asunder. Burn a music CD, selecting the .wav files, using a program such as Brasero or K3b.
Q I run: sudo apt update
and get these error messages:
W: An error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. GPG error: http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb stable Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 6494C6D6997C215E
W: Failed to fetch http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/dists/stable/Release.gpg The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 6494C6D6997C215E W: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
A (Thanks to vasa1 in the Ubuntu Forums) To get the public key for Google Chrome, run this command:
wget -q -O - https://dl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | sudo apt-key add -
Q I have a small home network of 5 Windows computers, two Linux computers, one Mac, and one Windows server that I want to be able to authenticate to a Linux-based file and print server. The key for me is synchronizing logins. I don't want individual logins to each computer and server. When I ask questions, I'm not getting any answers.
A I suspect that the reason you aren't getting answers is, 99.99% of people here do not do network authentication. My home network has half a dozen computers running a mix of Linux and Windows. I have a file server and shared printer. People log on to their own computer, not “the network”.
I have set up personal and public shared folders on the file server using Samba.
Assuming you have installed a member of the Ubuntu family, the version of Samba you have is not even close to being the latest and greatest. It meets my needs, but probably not yours.
Have you run across Zentyal? I had a quick look at it more than a year ago, but it didn't solve the problem I was looking at. However, it might be just the thing in your environment.

Maybe time to upgrade
If you are running version 16.10 of any of the flavours of Ubuntu, it is time to upgrade.
Those versions experienced “end of life” in July. I'm not a fan of the nine-month life of Ubuntu's “interim” releases. I think it would be much more productive if Canonical had selected a 14-month life. That would let people have a year of the interim release, plus a couple of months for the required upgrade to settle down.
This doesn't affect me directly, since I'm using Xubuntu 17.04 as my daily driver, but in just a few months I will need to upgrade to 17.10.
