Formalizing the UBports Foundation The final steps to become an official foundation April 2017, the UBports Community took full responsibility for the development and maintenance of the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system. This has led to huge growth of the community. In order to fulfill the growing needs of the community, and support the ambition of sustaining healthy development of Ubuntu Touch and its ecosystem, a formal and legal entity, with proper leadership, would be necessary. And so, efforts to create a Foundation began. As we stand today, approximately one year later, we’re still moving ahead, and are already on the final steps of the long legal/bureaucratic process for the setup of the UBports Foundation. All the paperwork has been submitted, and we patiently await the decision of the authorities. Ubuntu Touch is built by the community for everybody who values freedom of choice. Forming an official Foundation has been a long-time goal for UBports. We are getting very close to this goal; we expect to have the formal UBports Foundation established in August/September 2018.

En avril 2017, la UBports Community a accepté la responsabilité pleine et entière du développement et de la maintenance du système d'exploitation mobile Ubuntu Touch. En conséquence, la communauté a énormément grandi. Afin de répondre aux besoins croissants de la communauté et de soutenir leur ambition de continuer le développement sain d'Ubuntu Touch et de son écosystème, une entité juridique officielle, sous des dirigeants convenables, serait nécessaire. Ainsi, le travail de création d'une fondation démarra. Étant donné notre position actuelle, environ une année plus tard, nous continuons à avancer et sommes déjà arrivés aux étapes finales du long processus légal/bureaucratique de la création de l'UBports Foundation. Nous avons soumis toute la documentation demandée et nous attendons patiemment la décision des autorités.
Ubuntu Touch est construit par la communauté pour tous les gens pour qui le droit de choisir est important. Créer une fondation officielle est un objectif à long terme pour UBports. Nous y approchons de très près ; nous nous attendons à ce que l'UBports Foundation officielle soit établie en août ou septembre 2018.
A bit of history The idea to create a foundation evolved over time. We’d like to shine some light on the history of the project and involvement of the UBports structure. The Beginning In 2015, Marius Gripsgård got an itch; he felt that the Ubuntu Touch project (at that time maintained and developed by Canonical) should be available to everybody. So he forced himself to start porting the OS to a “secret device”. During this period he had first contact with some interested sponsors. Not much later UBports was born. Joint Forces In November 2016, at Ubucon – Essen, the project became more serious. Marius presented his plans to a bigger audience and managed to persuade a sponsor to make financial resources available with the aim of establishing a Foundation. However, the time was not right to take that step. Ubuntu Touch was still supported and developed by Canonical.
Un peu d'histoire
L'idée de créer une fondation a évolué au cours du temps. Nous aimerions illuminer quelque peu l'histoire du projet et l'implication de la structure d'UBports.
Le commencement
En 2015, une idée accapara Marius Gripsgård ; il avait le sentiment que le projet Ubuntu Touch (à cette époque, il était maintenu et développé par Canonical) devrait être disponible à tout le monde. Il s'est obligé alors à commencer à porter l'OS sur un « dispositif secret ». Au cours de cette période, il y a eu un premier contact avec des sponsors intéressés. UBports est né peu de temps après.
Des forces communes
En novembre 2016, à Ubucon - Essen, le projet devint plus sérieux. Marius a présenté ses idées à un plus grand public et a réussi à convaincre un sponsor de rendre disponibles des ressources financières dans le but d'établir une fondation. Toutefois, le timing d'une telle démarche n'était pas judicieux, car Ubuntu Touch était toujours supporté et développé par Canonical.
A couple of months later, a team, including Marius, was invited to join Canonical at Mobile World Congress 2017. From this moment, the dream was ignited! We were ready to join forces and figure out how to move forward with porting Ubuntu to the mobile devices. A Bomb Drop and a New Starting Point Not much later, Canonical dropped some shocking news. In April 2017, they announced that they would no longer be developing Ubuntu Touch or Unity 8 - its “phone and convergence shell”. Unity 8 was central to Canonical's efforts to have one user interface across all devices. At that time, a small group of contributors started to explore the opportunity of restarting the development of Ubuntu on the mobile devices. UBports made its first steps and prepared to “fork” Ubuntu Touch. As you all know now, the brand Ubuntu Touch has seen the light, and, as of today, it is still called Ubuntu Touch. Operating as the UBports Community Since the UBports community took over the full development of Ubuntu Touch, new steps needed to follow. In order for UBports to reach its full potential, there was (and still is) the belief that the establishment of an official legal Foundation would be required to maintain the interests of the community.
Quelques mois plus tard, une équipe qui comprenait Marius, fut invitée de se joindre à Canonical au Mobile World Congress 2017. À partir de là, le rêve prenait forme ! Nous étions prêts à collaborer et à déterminer comment faire avancer le portage d'Ubuntu vers les dispositifs mobiles.
Le lâcher d'une bombe et un nouveau point de départ
Peu de temps après, Canonical lâcha une nouvelle étonnante. En avril 2017, ils annoncèrent qu'ils ne développeraient plus ni Ubuntu Touch ni Unity 8 - son « shell téléphone et convergence ». Unity 8 était au centre des efforts de Canonical pour avoir une seule interface utilisateur sur tous les dispositifs. À cette époque, un petit groupe de contributeurs a commencé à explorer la possibilité de redémarrer le développement d'Ubuntu sur des dispositifs mobiles. UBports a fait ses premiers pas en préparant la création d'une « branche » d'Ubuntu Touch. Comme vous le savez tous maintenant, la marque Ubuntu Touch est née et, à ce jour, elle s'appelle toujours Ubuntu Touch.
Fonctionnement en tant que communauté UBports
Depuis que la communauté UBPorts a repris le développement complet d'Ubuntu Touch, de nouvelles étapes devaient être entreprises. Pour que UBports atteigne pleinement son potentiel, on croyait (et on croit toujours) qu'il serait nécessaire d'établir une entité juridique officielle sous forme d'une fondation pour maintenir les intérêts de la communauté.
Jan Sprinz and Ewald Pierre took upon themselves the task of preparing the required documents and Foundation structure. To do this correctly, a first visit to an accountant took place on June 28th, 2017. On the side, lawyers took care of the legal documentation, including laying out the correct usage of the brand (logo, name, distinctive marks, etc…) and finalizing the Foundation documents. When requested, an experienced partner (LibreOffice) helped us out. Meanwhile the community behind Ubuntu Touch grew fast. New sponsors committed themselves to the project and UBports transformed into a well structured group with a current member count of well over 1600 people. Formalizing the UBports Foundation The UBports Board of Directors (BoD) is excited to announce that UBports has officially sent (June 19th, 2018) her formal request for approval to the local government in Berlin. We are proud that the final steps to become an official Foundation are now completed and we expect to have the formal UBports Foundation established by August/September. A Foundation provides the project benefits such as more structure, and new funding and merchandising opportunities.
Jan Sprinz et Ewald Pierre ont assumé la tâche de préparation des documents nécessaires et de la structure de la fondation. Pour le faire correctement, une première visite fut rendue à un comptable le 28 juin 2017. De leur côté, des avocats se sont occupés des documents légaux, y compris une définition de l'utilisation correcte de la marque (le logo, le nom, les signes distinctifs, etc…) et l'officialisation des documents de la fondation. Sur demande, un partenaire expérimenté (LibreOffice) nous a aidés.
Entre temps, la croissance de la communauté derrière Ubuntu Touch s'est beaucoup accélérée. De nouveaux sponsors se sont impliqués dans le projet et UBports est devenu un groupe bien structuré avec actuellement bien plus de 1 600 membres.
L'officialisation de la UBports Foundation
C'est avec joie que le Conseil d'administration d'UBports annonce que, le 19 juin 2018, UBports a officiellement soumis sa demande d'approbation au gouvernement local à Berlin. Nous sommes fiers que toutes les étapes nécessaires pour devenir une fondation officielle soient maintenant achevées et nous nous attendons à ce que l'UBports Foundation officielle soit établie au plus tard en août/septembre. Les bénéfices d'une telle fondation pour le projet sont, notamment, plus de structures et de nouvelles occasions de financement et de commercialisation.
