The Linux Command Line 2nd Edition: A Complete Introduction William Shotts Published March 7, 2019 504 Pages No Starch Press ISBN-13: 978-1593279523 I have to admit, I purchased this when the first edition came out back in 2012. As with the first edition, the second edition is a must-have for anyone’s computer book library. While many of us would quickly thumb through many of the day-to-day topics, anxious to get to the better stuff, we would be doing ourselves an injustice by doing this. The author has a very good style of taking the things that we might already know (and at least in my case, takes a while to remember how to do it) and use often, and keeping it interesting and up-to-date. The author points out that this book is for the new Linux user. It’s true that is the base target reader for the book. However, as I said before, anyone who uses Linux should have this book in their library, if not on their desk within easy reach.

Je dois avouer que j'ai acheté ce livre lors de la sortie de la première édition en 2012. Tout comme la première, la deuxième édition est un must dans la bibliothèque de livres informatiques de tout un chacun. Bien que de nombreuses personnes veuillent plutôt feuilleter rapidement beaucoup des sujets courants, car impatientes d'atteindre les parties les plus intéressantes, vous ne vous rendriez pas justice en le faisant. L'auteur a un très bon style et réussit à parler des choses que l'on peut déjà connaître (au moins dans mon cas, il faut réfléchir pas mal pour se souvenir de comment faire) et utiliser souvent, tout en faisant le nécessaire pour garder les idées intéressantes et à jour.
L'auteur précise que ce livre est destiné aux nouveaux utilisateurs de Linux et c'est vrai qu'ils sont le lectorat cible de base. Cependant, comme je l'ai déjà dit, ce livre a une place dans la bibliothèque - sinon sur le bureau, à portée de la main - de tout utilisateur de Linux.
If I had to pick just one ‘best’ chapter, that would be very difficult, but if you put my feet to the fire, I would have to say it would be Chapter 19: Regular Expressions. I always thought that I could pretty well handle Regular Expressions, but re-reading this chapter brought home just how much I’ve forgotten. One important thing in this second edition, is that it now covers bash version 4.x, and there are many scripts to help the new Linux user to get a good grasp of the shell scripting process. For me, my battered, torn, highlighted, annotated and dog-eared copy of the first edition may now respectably rest in peace in my bookshelf – as I now move it from my desk only to be replaced by its more mature successor.
Si je devais choisir un seul « meilleur » chapitre, ce serait extrêmement difficile, mais s'il fallait absolument le faire, je serais obligé de dire que ce serait le chapitre 19 : Regular Expressions. J'ai toujours pensé que je savais très bien traiter les expressions régulières, mais la relecture de ce chapitre m'a rappelé toutes les choses que j'avais oubliées.
Une chose importante dans cette deuxième édition, c'est que, maintenant, il parle de la version 4.x de Bash et il y a beaucoup de scripts qui aideront le nouvel utilisateur de Linux à bien comprendre l'écriture de scripts en shell.
Pour ce qui me concerne, mon exemplaire de la première édition, malmené, déchiré, surligné, annoté et écorné, peut maintenant reposer en paix sur mon étagère - puisque je l'enlève du bureau uniquement parce qu'il sera remplacé par son plus mature successeur.

There are four sections (parts), and a total of 36 chapters, so I won’t enumerate each and every chapter, but I will point out some of the chapters that might be of interest to newer Linux users. You can see that the chapters will cover all the basics, and will go into detail when needed to fully explain the subject at hand. Vous verrez que les chapitres traiteront de tous les sujets de base et, au besoin, donneront des détails qui compléteront l'explication du sujet couvert.
