Easier Than Nwipe The last edition (FCM#164) addressed a few aspects of security, which has been growing ever more important. I was interested in your article on using nwipe to wipe the disk of an old computer destined for recycling. There is an easier way, but it needs to be addressed in advance. I purchased a new Ubuntu computer from Dell. After checking that it all worked correctly, I freshly installed Ubuntu 20.04, using LUKS to encrypt the entire drive (with UEFI to check the unencrypted Grub and /boot). This is an option on the standard Ubuntu installer, so it was easy to do. The passphrase that I chose for LUKS is, of course, very strong, otherwise there's no point to the encryption.

Il y a une façon plus facile de faire, mais il faut en être conscient à l’avance. J’ai acheté un nouvel ordinateur Ubuntu auprès de Dell. Après avoir vérifié que tout fonctionnait comme il fallait, j’ai fait une installation fraîche d’Ubuntu 20.04, avec LUKS pour chiffrer le disque entier (avec UEFI pour vérifier Grub et /boot qui ne sont pas cryptés). Il s’agit d’une option disponible sur l’installeur Ubuntu standard et c’était donc facile à faire. La phrase de passe que j’ai choisi pour LUKS est, bien entendu, très forte, sinon il n’y a aucun intérêt à faire le chiffrage.
I occasionally need a couple of other OSes, including Windows, so rather than using dual-boot, I have installed them as virtual machines. As their virtual drives are on the LUKS drive, they are also fully encrypted. Being able to use a snapshot with Windows, given its frequent bugs, is a huge advantage! Another advantage is that I can continue to use my main OS (Ubuntu) while running any of my other OSes. Installing this way means that when the time eventually comes to recycle this computer, I don't have to worry about erasing the drive. All that I have to do is forget my LUKS passphrase, and the data is lost.
De temps en temps, j’ai besoin de deux ou trois autres OS, y compris Windows ; aussi, plutôt que d'utiliser le double amorçage, je les installe comme machines virtuelles. Puisque leurs disques virtuels sont sur le disque LUKS, ils sont également entièrement cryptés. Pouvoir utiliser un instantané avec Windows, étant donné ses bogues fréquents, est un énorme plus ! Un autre avantage, c’est que je peux continuer à utiliser mon OS principal (Ubuntu) tout en exécutant l'un de mes autres OS.
Faire une installation de cette façon signifie que quand, finalement, le moment arrive de recycler cet ordinateur, je n’ai pas besoin d’effacer le disque. Tout ce que je dois faire, c’est d’oublier la phrase de passe de LUKS et toutes mes données sont perdues.
I recommend this way forward for everyone who has a computer with sufficient memory and power: Have your main OS on a disk fully encrypted with LUKS, and all sub-OSes in VMs. It saves a lot of bother! If you're a business, this automatically satisfies requirements for fully encrypted data-at-rest (such as GDPR in the UK or Data Protection in the EU). Paddy Landau Ubports Touch and Pinephone The UB Ports article in FCM magazine was useful. But I bought a Pinephone recently and, having put UBports [Touch] on it, found out that it is still a way behind. I have to reboot the phone every time I want to make a call, I have trouble selecting numbers when in a call (select 2 for sales…), and I get loud static over bluetooth in the car instead of audio. It was all enough for me to put the phone aside until an update fixes all these things. I have my BQ Ubuntu phone to use in the meanwhile. Chris Burmajster
Je recommande cette façon de faire pour toutes les personnes qui ont un ordinateur avec une mémoire et une puissance suffisantes : mettez votre OS principal sur un disque entièrement crypté avec LUKS et tous les sous-OS dans des machines virtuelles. Cela vous épargne bien de la peine ! S’il s’agit d’une entreprise, cela satisfait automatiquement aux obligations du plein chiffrement des données stratégiques (comme la réglementation GDPR au Royaume-Uni ou la Protection des données en Europe).

UBports Touch et Pinephone
L’article sur UBports dans le magazine Full Circle était utile. Mais j’ai récemment acheté un Pinephone et, ayant installé UBports [Touch] dessus, j’ai trouvé qu’il a toujours pas mal de retard. Chaque fois que je veux appeler quelqu’un, je dois redémarrer le téléphone ; j’ai du mal à choisir un numéro pendant un appel (tapez 2 pour les ventes…) et, dans la voiture, je reçois un grand bruit statique par le Bluetooth au lieu de l’audio. Tout cela était assez pour me convaincre de mettre le phone de côté jusqu’à ce qu’une mise à jour remédie à tout. J’utiliserai mon téléphone Ubuntu BQ en attendant.
