I struggle to find the correct words or phrases for this article. I will start with the simplest answer. My father raised me to look for the best alternative to get a task gone. My father came from a large agrarian family, and I know this shaped his role as my father. I used Linux as an alternative operating system. My old Windows Vista laptop became infected, and was not working. I used Linux to recover the missing files. In time, I found a replacement Windows laptop, and reinstalled the missing files. My wife and I then saved our money to purchase a MacBook Pro. We fell under the impression that Apple was completely better than Windows.

Si je recherche la meilleure alternative pour l’accomplissement d’une tâche, c’est grâce à mon père. Sa famille est grande et agraire et je sais que cela a façonné son rôle de père.
J’utilisais Linux comme système d’exploitation alternatif. Mon vieux portable sous Windows Vista a été infecté et ne fonctionnait pas. En utilisant Linux, j’ai pu récupérer les fichiers manquants. Au fil des jours, j’ai trouvé un portable Windows pour le remplacer et j’y ai réinstallé les fichiers manquants. Mon épouse et moi avons alors économisé pour acheter un MacBook Pro, car nous avions l’impression que Apple était nettement meilleur que Windows.
We were left with an older Windows laptop that was not being utilized. Following a close friend, Mike, I installed Ubuntu onto that laptop. And slowly I became evangelized against Windows. We maintained the MacBook and I began my distro hopping. Always looking at downstream Debian projects. I ran on Ubuntu for 3-5 months, then I drifted over to Linux Mint. I stayed on Linux Mint for a year. In this timeframe, I began looking into Linux magazines, podcasts, and websites. I developed my knowledge. I learned about RPM based Linux, and developed deeper into my Linux Love. And my interest in ChromeOS devices started. Incidentally I started to read Full Circle Magazine. I moved into using openSUSE. I was perplexed by YAST and zypper commands. Yet I was willing to learn. After 3-6 months, openSUSE announced Leap and Tumbleweed as being the main products from SUSE. I was put off by the recent announcement, and I drifted towards Fedora.

Pendant ce temps, j’ai commencé à regarder des magazines, podcasts et sites Web dédiés à Linux ; ainsi, j’ai augmenté mes connaissances. J’ai appris des choses sur Linux basé sur RPM et mon amour pour Linux ne cessait de croître. Puis mon intérêt pour des dispositifs sous ChromeOS a commencé. D’ailleurs, c’est à cette époque que j’ai commencé à lire le magazine Full Circle.
Ensuite, j’ai changé pour openSUSE, bien que les commandes YAST et sypper me rendent perplexe. Pourtant, je voulais apprendre. Après environ 3 à 6 mois, openSUSE a annoncé que Leap et Tumbleweed étaient les produits principaux de SUSE, ce qui m’a défrisé. Je me suis alors tourné petit à petit vers Fedora.
It was at this time I asked Ronnie to write an article to cover Chromebooks. He did not have a Chromebook, but offered me a chance to write an article. Using my work bonus, I purchased a Toshiba Chromebook 2, and I wrote my first article. Fedora felt better, but I was never able to call it home. Using Distrowatch, I came across KororaOS. I installed Korora and felt at home. Eventually, I reached out to the project team and became their social media manager. And, in time, like all small teams, Korora was discontinued. I drifted back to Fedora. I started looking at Arch-based distros and BSD operating systems. Slowly our Macbook became obsolete. I replaced macOS with an Arch-based Linux and continue to write for Full Circle.
À cette époque-là, j’ai demandé à Ronnie d’écrire un article traitant des Chromebooks. Il n’avait pas de Chromebook et il m’a proposé d’écrire l’article moi-même. Avec une prime du boulot, j’ai acheté un Chromebook2 de chez Toshiba et j’ai écrit mon premier article.
Fedora me procurait de meilleures sensations, mais je n’ai jamais pu m’y accoutumer vraiment. Sur Distrowatch, j’ai découvert KororaOS. Je l’ai installé et me suis senti vraiment à l’aise. À la longue, j’ai contacté l’équipe du projet et suis devenu son gestionnaire des réseaux sociaux. Mais, finalement, comme pour toutes les petites équipes, Korora a été abandonné et je suis retourné à Fedora.
J’ai commencé à examiner des distrib. basées sur Arch et des systèmes d’exploitation BSD. Petit à petit, notre MacBook est devenu obsolète. J’ai remplacé MacOS par Linux basé sur Arch et je continue à écrire pour le Full Circle.
In time, like all children, I lost my father. And I spent the last few months recomposing myself for my family. And I make the parallels between my life’s decision to my upbringing. My father gave me two pieces of advice that I strongly reflect upon: “Sometimes the only choice you have left is to be strong.” “Choose the best alternative for you.” -PA Webb I now realize I use Linux due to its inherent strengths and the alternative role it assumes. And now I strongly understand my father will be with me as long as I write about Linux in all forms.
Enfin, comme c’est le cas de tous les enfants, j’ai perdu mon père. Et, ces derniers mois, j’étais en train d’essayer de m’en remettre, pour ma famille. Et je fais des parallèles entre mes décisions de vie et la façon dont j’étais élevé. Mon père m’a donné deux conseils auxquels je réfléchis souvent :

Je me rends compte maintenant que j’utilise Linux à cause de ses forces intrinsèques et du rôle alternatif qu’il remplit. Et maintenant je comprends vraiment que mon père sera avec moi aussi longtemps que j’écrirai au sujet de Linux sous toutes ses formes.
