Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Adel, and I am a Kazakh from China. (Yeah, a lot of us live in China, since China and Kazakhstan are neighboring countries. In fact, my home is just near the intersection of the four countries: Russia, China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan.) I met Ubuntu much later than most Full Circle readers - at version 10.04. When I rolled into college in Beijing in 2009, I didn't know much about computers, and I didn't own a computer, since it was too expensive for me. So, I often went to the netbar to enjoy the computers. The cost is 2 yuan per hour, about $0.31 US. I like collecting different software and other things while others are enjoying computer games. In fact I seldom play games. Then I accidentally came across Ubuntu, version 10.04. At first, I just thought it was a program, but soon I found that it was so popular in the software websites. Yes, it is an operating system.

J'ai fait la connaissance d'Ubuntu beaucoup plus tard que la plupart des lecteurs du Full Circle - lors de la version 10.04. Quand j'ai intégré la fac à Beijing [Pékin] en 2009, je ne connaissais pas grand chose sur les ordinateurs et je n'en avais pas un moi-même, car c'était trop cher pour moi. Je suis donc souvent allé au cybercafé pour m'amuser avec les ordinateurs. Cela coûte 2 yuan de l'heure, environ 0,31 $ US (environ 0,20 €). J'aime bien récupérer différents logiciels et autres trucs pendant que d'autres s'amusent avec des jeux. En fait, je ne joue que rarement sur ordinateur.
Puis, j'ai découvert Ubuntu 10.04 par hasard. D'abord, je pensais que ce n'était qu'un programme, mais j'ai bientôt vu qu'il était vraiment populaire sur des sites web de logiciels. Oui, c'est bel et bien un système d'exploitation.
In China, nearly 100% of computers run Windows, including those in the netbars and schools. When I use a computer in the netbar, it always crashes, which often drives me mad - you never know why they do this. I wanted to buy a laptop for myself because I wanted to try Ubuntu so much, and with one I need not go to netbars, but this was impossible. Then I found a new software called VirtualBox, which I think many of you are familiar with. With it, I could run Ubuntu in the computer in the netbar! This is exciting! Almost every weekend I went to the bar to virtualize my Ubuntu. How I wanted a computer for myself! The things above happened in 2010, and, in December of that year, I finally bought my first computer. It has an Atom D510 CPU and 2GB DDR and a 160GB hard disk. In fact it is a netbook. The second day, I went to the netbar and downloaded the latest Ubuntu 10.10 and installed it on my computer. Yes, I installed it by clearing the whole disk which ran Windows 7 when I bought it, which is so slow when I start it.
En Chine, près de 100% des ordinateurs sont sous Windows, y compris ceux dans les cybercafés et les écoles. Quand je me sers d'un ordinateur dans le cybercafé, il plante toujours, ce qui me rend souvent fou - vous ne savez jamais le pourquoi du plantage. Je voulais m'acheter un portable parce que je voulais vraiment essayer Ubuntu et aussi parce qu'avec ma propre machine, je n'aurais pas besoin de fréquenter des cybercafés, mais c'était impossible.
C'est alors que j'ai découvert un nouveau logiciel qui s'appelle VirtualBox que beaucoup d'entre vous connaissent, je crois. Avec lui, je pouvais exécuter Ubuntu sur l'ordinateur du cybercafé ! C'était passionnant ! J'allais au cybercafé presque chaque week-end pour virtualiser mon Ubuntu. Qu'est-ce que j'avais envie d'un ordinateur qui soit à moi tout seul !
Tout cela s'est passé en 2010 et, au mois de décembre de cette année-là, j'ai enfin acheté mon premier ordinateur, avec un Atom D510 et 2 Go de DDR ram et un disque dur de 160 Go. En fait, il s'agit d'un netbook. Le lendemain, je suis allé au cybercafé et j'ai téléchargé la version la plus récente d'Ubuntu, la 10.10 et je l'ai installée. Oui, je l'ai installée en utilisant le disque entier. Lorsque je l'ai acheté, il y avait Windows 7, qui est tellement lent au démarrage.
Now I have been using Ubuntu more than 3 months. Everything is going so perfectly! I work with OpenOffice.org (can you help me install LibreOffice? thank you!), watch videos with VLC, and chat with Skype since it allows me to do video chatting. Firefox works very well too, and I also installed Chrome. Almost forget one thing - I also installed Macbuntu. I think you must have heard of it? It is so wonderful not only because it looks beautiful, but also you can use “expose” by moving the mouse to the right corner or left corner when you are dealing with many apps. (I had once used my friend's Mac OS, but the expose in it is much less convenient than Macbuntu, for you must use the keyboard and four fingers to use it, not just the mouse.) Yeah, that's all my wonderful experience with Ubuntu. Nearly all my friends envy my desktop when they see my computer. (They just think it is Mac OS, hahahaha.) I love it so, so, so much!!! I will never leave it and never use that heavy and slow Windows!
J'utilise Ubuntu depuis plus de trois mois maintenant. Tout se passe de façon tellement parfaite ! Je travaille avec OpenOffice.org (pourriez-vous m'aider à installer LibreOffice ? Merci !), je regarde des vidéos avec VLC et je tchatche avec Skype puisqu'il me permet d'avoir des conversations vidéo. Firefox fonctionne très bien également et j'ai aussi installé Chrome. Ah ! J'ai failli oublier quelque chose : j'ai aussi installé Macbuntu. Vous devez en avoir entendu parler, non ? C'est tellement génial, non pas seulement à cause de sa beauté, mais aussi parce que vous pouvez utiliser « expose » en bougeant la souris vers le coin droit ou le coin gauche quand vous vous servez de beaucoup d'applis. (J'ai utilisé une fois le Mac OS d'un ami, mais son « expose » est nettement moins commode que celui de Macbuntu, car il faut vous servir du clavier et de quatre doigts - la souris ne suffit pas.)
Et voilà, c'est toute mon expérience merveilleuse avec Ubuntu. Presque tous mes amis sont jaloux de mon bureau quand ils voient mon ordinateur. (Ils pensent tout simplement que c'est sous Mac OS, hahahaha !) Je l'aime tant !!! Je ne le quitterai jamais et je n'utiliserai jamais Windows qui est lent et lourd !
Now my life has really, really changed. With color everyday, Ubuntu gives me so much pleasure and excitement, although I know little about the Linux world. No, Ubuntu shouldn't be treated as Linux, it is Ubuntu, the way it is, which always gives you new convenience, new choices, and new adventure. Thanks for reading my letter.
