Easy Install I have a method for installing a different version of Ubuntu or its derivatives. I gave up doing upgrades a couple years ago when they became unreliable. I do only fresh installs now, so this method works for upgrading or downgrading your computer. The first thing I do is to backup all my files that I want to keep. I do not use a backup tool, I just copy all the files to an external device. In my case, it is a 150GB hard drive. After that is done, I compile a list of all the applications and files that I have added and wish to keep as well. To do this, I open Gedit and list all the applications and files in alphabetical order, separating each one with a space.

J'ai une méthode pour installer une version différente d'Ubuntu ou ses dérivés. J'ai abandonné le fait de faire des mises à jour il y a environ deux ans quand elles sont devenues non fiables. Je fais seulement des installations fraîches maintenant, ainsi cette méthode marche pour une mise à niveau de votre système d'exploitation ou pour revenir à une ancienne version.
La première chose que je fais est de sauvegarder tous les fichiers que je veux garder. Je n'utilise pas d'outil de sauvegarde, je copie simplement tous les fichiers sur un disque externe. Dans mon cas, c'est un disque dur de 150 Go.
Une fois cela fait, je rédige une liste de toutes les applications et fichiers que j'ai ajoutés et que je veux également garder. Pour faire ceci, j'ouvre Gedit et je liste toutes les applications et fichiers dans l'ordre alphabétique, en séparant chacun par une espace.
At the start of the list I type: sudo apt-get install followed by a space. Be sure to use the names of the applications and files that are used to open them from the terminal. Be sure to copy this to your backup file so you will have it to use later. With that’s all done, it is time to install the version that you wish to have on your computer. After that is done, boot into your system and open the terminal and your list of apps. Copy and paste the entire list into the terminal, and press enter. If there are any errors in any of the names, the terminal will let you know. The terminal will ask you if you wish to continue, enter y and press enter. This could take a while so it would be a good time to configure your desktop to your desires.

Quand vous aurez fait tout cela, le moment est venu d'installer la version que vous voudriez avoir sur votre ordinateur. S'il y a des erreurs dans les noms, le terminal vous le dira. Le terminal vous demandera si vous voulez continuer, entrez y (pour Yes) et appuyez sur Entrée. Cela peut prendre un moment ; ce serait donc le bon moment de configurer votre bureau selon vos désirs.
Every time I install a new application, I add it to my list so that when it comes time to change my system the list is ready to go. I have been using Ubuntu on my notebook computer for five and a half years, and truly love it. It is easy to use, fast, and easily configured to fit my tastes. Unfortunately, Ubuntu is going in a direction with Unity that I cannot follow. Unity does not allow me to do what I do as easily as Gnome 2.x. Lucid Lynx is probably going to be the last Ubuntu version that this computer will ever see. I will still use Linux - as Windows and Apple are not options for me. Jim Barber

A Convert I work as a volunteer at a local community centre due to being made redundant last year. They had a Windows 2003 Server and Windows XP workstations. They were moving to a new location, but the company that installed it could not remember the domain admin password. We could move the server but we could not access the files at the new location due to the server using Sharepoint. All attempts failed trying to use password clearing software, so, as a last resort, I installed Ubuntu as a parallel OS. Logging into Ubuntu, I was able to see and copy all the shared files and folders. We then re-installed the Server as a fresh install - with password recorded by them. I have being playing with Ubuntu for only a few weeks as part of my Open University T155 Linux: an introduction course. I have now installed it on a few desktops and an old laptop, and I am really impressed. I am a true convert – and now spreading the word. Mark Sellars

Je travaille comme bénévole dans un foyer municipal suite à un licenciement l'année dernière.
Ils avaient un serveur Windows 2003 et des postes de travail Windows XP. Ils déménageaient, mais la société qui les avait installés ne se rappelait plus le mot de passe d'admin du Domaine local. Nous avons pu déménager le serveur, mais ne pouvions plus accéder aux fichiers dans le nouveau lieu, car le serveur utilisait Sharepoint.
Toutes les tentatives au moyen d'un logiciel qui annule le mot de passe ont échoué et, en dernier ressort, j'ai donc installé Ubuntu en double amorçage. Une fois connecté à Ubuntu, je pouvais voir et copier tous les fichiers et dossiers partagés.
Nous avons alors ré-installer le serveur proprement - avec un mot de passe enregistré par eux.
Je m'amuse avec Ubuntu, dans le cadre d'un cours que je suis, Open University T155 Linux : une introduction, depuis seulement quelques semaines. À ce jour, je l'ai installé sur quelques ordinateurs de bureau et un vieux portable et je suis vraiment impressionné.
Je suis un véritable converti - et maintenant je fais du prosélytisme.

Triple/Quad Boot? Ubuntu is the first choice for almost all windows converts. But after spending some time with Linux, and getting yourself dipped into Linux culture, many people are simply just not satisfied with only one Linux Distro. Can you please explain triple boot / quad boot with one windows XP / 7, and other two are Ubuntu and any other distro like Mint or Debain OS, or any other distro (may be Lubuntu) of your choice. Can you also explain manual partitioning. Once you get a grip on manual partitioning, the fear of installation will go away. So end users like me can upgrade it to the latest versions. A fresh install is a good option, because Ubuntu keeps changing default apps. So, after a successful upgrade, you have many softwares for one application like music. Experimenting inside virtualbox is always preferable. But recent windows converts do not know about virtualbox. Currently, I am dual booting XP and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Sujal

Pouvez-vous également expliquer la partitionnement manuel ? Une fois que vous aurez bien compris le partitionnement manuel, la peur de l'installation disparaîtra. Ainsi les simples utilisateurs comme moi pourront mettre leur ordinateur à niveau avec les dernières versions.
Faire une installation propre est une bonne option, car Ubuntu n'arrête pas de changer ses applis par défaut. Donc après une mise à niveau réussie, vous avez plusieurs programmes pour une seule application comme la musique.
Faire des essais avec Virtualbox est toujours préférable. Mais les nouveaux convertis de Windows ne connaissent pas Virtualbox.
Actuellement je suis en double amorçage XP et Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

Non-Printing Characters I am also having trouble with Garmin GPS and would also appreciate any ideas. I tried a virtual Windows XP box (using VirtualBox) but even that wouldn't work. And of course Garmin Helpdesk are worse than useless. In the Q&A section, there was a question about finding non-printing characters in LibreOffice/OpenOffice. I have found the extension “alternative find and replace” from Thomas Bilek to be very helpful with this. John

Ubuntu Developer Summit If you are like me then you spent some time participating remotely in UDS-P over the past week. I was pretty impressed by the goals that Mark Shuttleworth announced for 14.04 and even more I was delighted to see such a great turnout. I'm hopeful in the future I may be able to travel to physically participate in a UDS because I think the breadth of information you get to take back is well worth the trip not to mention the Ubuntu Community networking opportunities.
