The first two chapters of “Ubuntu Made Easy” begin by explaining what Linux is, how to try Ubuntu (yes, the book comes with a Live CD), and, if you like it, how to install Ubuntu. There are plenty of screenshots showing every step of the way.
Les deux premiers chapitres du livre Ubuntu Made Easy (Facilitez-vous Ubuntu) démarrent avec une explication de Linux, une méthode pour essayer Ubuntu (oui, un LiveCD est fourni) et, si l’essai est concluant, comment l’installer. Chaque étape est agrémentée de nombreuses captures d’écran.
With Ubuntu installed, the book then explains how the desktop works. This is particularly useful especially with Ubuntu now using Unity rather than the traditional Windows style desktop with ‘start’ button equivalent, taskbar and such-like. Unity is sure to fox new users.
Une fois Ubuntu installé, le livre explique comment fonctionne le bureau. C’est d’autant plus utile qu’Ubuntu utilise aujourd’hui Unity à la place du bureau traditionnel à la mode Windows, avec son équivalent du bouton « démarrer », sa barre des tâches, etc. Unity laisse sûrement perplexe plus d’un nouvel utilisateur.
Chapter five goes into great detail about getting connected to the Internet – whether it be via a modern wireless router or serial cable modem. It even shows a photo of a serial port. How quaint! It then explains browsers, email clients, microblogging and text chatting.
Le chapitre cinq explique avec moult détails comment se connecter à Internet, que ce soit par une connexion sans fil moderne ou un modem sur câble série. Il montre même une photo de ce port série. Assurément suranné ! Ensuite, des explications sont données sur les navigateurs, les clients de courrier électronique, le micro-blogage et le tchat.
From there it gets down to the nitty-gritty of installing and updating apps with the Ubuntu Software Center. Keep your eye out for Full Circle Magazine popping up in a couple of screenshots. Before moving on, the book discusses the Update Manager and adding repositories. A nice touch was the authors taking the time to explain the adding of PPAs.
De là, on embraye sur les aspects pratiques de l’installation et de la mise à jour des applications avec la Logithèque Ubuntu. Soyez à l’affût : vous verrez apparaître le Full Circle Magazine dans quelques captures d’écran. Avant les travaux pratiques, le livre vous éclaire sur le rôle du Gestionnaire de mise à jour et l’ajout de dépôts. À noter que les auteurs ont le bon goût d’expliquer l’ajout des PPA.
The next chapter is about housekeeping with Nautilus, burning CD/DVD discs and using USB storage devices. Nothing too in-depth, but still handy for getting people to do backups.
Le chapitre suivant se consacre aux tâches quotidiennes effectuées avec Nautilus, à la gravure de CD/DVD et à l’usage de périphériques de stockage USB. Rien de bien approfondi, mais toujours pratique pour que le commun des mortels puisse faire ses sauvegardes.
We’re not even half way through the book and we’re getting terminal commands? Hang on, installing pyWings via terminal? But we’ve not even touched on office/graphics/media stuff yet! Only after doing complex terminal stuff does it explain how to change the desktop wallpaper which seems a bit backwards.
Nous n'en sommes même pas à la moitié du livre que les commandes du terminal font déjà leur apparition. Quoi, installer pyWings en ligne de commande ? Alors qu’on n’a même pas encore abordé la bureautique, les logiciels graphiques ou multimédia ! Ce n’est qu’après avoir expliqué des trucs compliqués sur le terminal qu’on nous explique comment changer le fond d’écran - c'est le monde à l'envers.
After installing a printer and changing the localization we get to play with LibreOffice. It does a good job of explaining the different parts that make up the office suite, and quickly explains how to use each part.
Après avoir installé une imprimante et changé la langue du système, on peut enfin jouer avec LibreOffice. Le livre fait bien son boulot en détaillant les différentes composantes de cette suite bureautique, ainsi qu’en expliquant rapidement comment utiliser chacune d’entre elles.
At the halfway mark the book begins explaining how to import photos from digital cameras and how to go about getting images published online. Although, Facebook for publishing photos? Why not Flickr or something more suited to photographs? Next, after some GIMP talk, comes audio with Rhythmbox and the ripping of audio CDs. When the book discusses the connection of Android devices I did like how it mentioned the current trend of using MTP (rather than the old USB storage option) explaining that as of 12.04 MTP is much more Android friendly. Several pages on and we find that some Apple devices fare just as badly with HFS+ formatting which doesn’t get along well with the Linux kernel.
A mi-chemin, le livre explique comment importer des photos depuis un appareil numérique et comment les publier en ligne. Cela dit, pourquoi avoir choisi Facebook pour cela ? Pourquoi pas Flickr ou tout autre service plus spécialisé dans ce domaine ? Ensuite, après quelques mots sur GIMP, c’est le tour de l’audio, avec Rhythmbox et l’extraction de CD audio. Dans la partie sur la connexion d’appareils sous Android, j’ai apprécié la façon dont les auteurs décrivent la tendance actuelle qui consiste à utiliser MTP (plutôt que la vieille option « USB storage »), expliquant que le MTP sous Ubuntu 12.04 rend l’usage d’Android plus convivial. Plusieurs pages plus tard, on découvre que certains appareils de chez Apple s’en sortent, eux, mal à cause de leur formatage en HFS+, qui ne s'accorde pas bien avec le noyau Linux.
After video playback we enter into the realm of Linux games. Several titles are mentioned from various genres.
Après la lecture des vidéos, on entre dans le royaume des jeux Linux. Plusieurs titres, dans des genres divers, sont cités.
It’s inevitable that, at some point, your Linux machine will come into contact with a Windows machine. Chapter 19 explains how to mount Windows drives and touches upon installing and using Wine.
C’est quasiment inévitable : votre machine sous Linux entrera un jour ou l’autre en contact avec une machine sous Windows. Le chapitre 19 vous explique comment monter des lecteurs Windows et évoque l’installation et l’usage de Wine.
Heading into the final straight, the book discusses the community and how to get help. A big thanks to No Starch Press for including Full Circle Magazine in its list of newsworthy sites. Definitely an honor!

The final chapters show what to do if your Ubuntu comes a cropper and you need some assistance or, worse still, safe mode.
Les derniers chapitres vous montrent que faire si votre Ubuntu se met à dérailler et que vous avez besoin d’aide ou, pire encore, d’utiliser le mode sans échec.
I like the information that’s contained in “Ubuntu Made Easy,” but I’m not sure that it’s a good idea to begin with trying to explain what Linux/Ubuntu is. I think a better starting point would have been explaining how to try Ubuntu; then, later on, explaining what Linux is after the user has tried it. The other chapters are great, but maybe a little rearrangement would have been in order. I’d probably have told people how to hook up Apple/Android devices and use the office apps before teaching them about installing pyWings via the command line.
J’aime les informations données dans ce Ubuntu Made Easy, mais je pense qu’il n’est pas utile de démarrer l’ouvrage avec des explications sur Linux/Ubuntu. Il aurait sans doute mieux valu commencer avec l’utilisation d’Ubuntu ; expliquer la nature de Linux aurait été plus approprié ensuite, une fois l’utilisateur acclimaté. Les autres chapitres sont bons, mais une réorganisation n’aurait pas été superflue. J’aurais sans doute d’abord expliqué comment brancher un appareil Android ou Apple ou utiliser la suite bureautique avant d’enseigner comment installer pyWings en ligne de commande.
Definitely a great book for beginners, but you’ll probably have to explain to them not to panic about the early mentions of the terminal.
Ce livre convient sans aucun doute aux débutants, mais il faudra probablement leur expliquer comment ne pas paniquer lors des premières apparitions du terminal.
