My first computer was a used Fujitsu-Siemens with 128 MB of RAM, loaded with Windows XP. It was 6 years old when I got it in 2005. Up to that point I had used machines at work using Windows 95 on a company network, using Lotus Notes. I had a bit of fun with this machine, which eventually died giving me a nice blank blue screen. I searched the support sites but eventually checked the hardware for faults and, lo and behold, poor contact of the RAM modules was rectified and I was back on the air. Up to this point I was working with dial-up, and then I got broadband. I then got a desktop built by the local shop based on an ASRock board with 1 GB of RAM and Windows XP. This was followed by a wireless router from my ISP which I used to set up a network with a Toshiba laptop with Win XP, which both my wife and I could use downstairs while my router and desktop were kept upstairs with the printer. So I got my wife using email! An ability to run iPlayer, and show photos from the laptop on TV, was also well received. There was no way she would allow the living or dining room to be permanently cluttered up with a desktop computer and printer. To improve performance, I successfully upgraded the RAM in the machines.

Jusque-là, au travail, j'avais utilisé des machines sous Windows 95 en réseau d'entreprise utilisant Lotus Notes. Je me suis bien amusé avec cette machine, qui est finalement morte en me gratifiant d’un magnifique écran bleu vide. J'ai fouillé les sites de support, j’ai finalement vérifié le matériel et, ô surprise, un mauvais contact des modules de RAM fut corrigé et c’était reparti. Jusqu'alors, je me connectais en RTC, puis j'ai eu accès au haut débit. J'ai ensuite eu un PC de bureau, assemblé par le magasin local et basé sur une carte ASRock avec 1 Go de RAM et Windows XP. Est ensuite arrivé un routeur Wi-Fi de mon FAI que j'ai utilisé pour mettre en place un réseau avec un ordinateur portable Toshiba sous Win XP que mon épouse et moi pouvions utiliser en bas, tandis que mon routeur et mon PC de bureau restaient à l'étage avec l'imprimante. Mon épouse s’est alors mise à utiliser l’e-mail ! La possibilité d'exécuter iPlayer et de montrer des photos à partir de l'ordinateur portable sur la télévision a également été bien accueillie. En aucun cas elle n’aurait accepté d’encombrer en permanence le salon ou la salle à manger avec un ordinateur de bureau et une imprimante. Pour améliorer les performances, je mis à niveau la RAM des machines.
So, now I had a home network, wireless, powerline ethernet, broadband, printing and laptop. My son’s Fujitsu of the same vintage had by this time also died, so for the fun of it I brought it back from the dead with a new hard drive, which I successfully fitted. But what about the operating system? It was then I discovered that to get the machine back on, I had to buy a Windows XP CD at what I thought was a high price, and had things called product codes which are a pain. As luck would have it, I found a magazine which offered a free CD with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I tentatively installed this, not knowing a thing about live CDs or Linux, and, with fingers crossed, got Ubuntu up and running. It took a while to get a printer working with a suitable driver from the Internet; and then, eventually, I successfully added the machine to the network.
J’avais donc maintenant un réseau domestique sans fil, ethernet sur courant porteur, le haut débit, l'impression et un ordinateur portable. Le Fujitsu de mon fils, du même millésime, rendit l’âme également. Pour me distraire, je l'ai alors ramené à la vie grâce à un nouveau disque dur, que j'ai réussi à installer. Mais quid du système d'exploitation ? C'est alors que je me suis rendu compte que pour faire fonctionner la machine, je devais acheter un CD de Windows XP, dont le prix me semblait élevé et qui avait des trucs appelés « codes de produit », qui sont une véritable plaie. Je suis alors tombé par hasard sur un magazine qui offrait un CD gratuit avec Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. J’en ai donc tenté l’installation, sans rien savoir à propos de live CD ou de Linux et, en croisant les doigts, j'ai réussi à faire fonctionner Ubuntu. Il m’a fallu un certain temps pour obtenir une imprimante fonctionnelle avec un pilote adapté récupéré sur Internet ; enfin, après quelques tâtonnements, j'ai réussi à ajouter la machine au réseau.
The AsRock desktop started crashing, so I loaded this with Ubuntu 10.04, but the problem persisted and was solved only when I replaced the hard drive and reloaded Ubuntu. This worked very well and was added to the network. I then decided to build up an up-to-date machine based on a Asus motherboard package from Maplin with a SATA hard drive. (The local computer shop gave me a case free of charge.) This I also loaded with Ubuntu 10.04, and, when 12.04 was offered as an upgrade, I managed to get that running. I am now pretty familiar with the new desktop, and can switch from one machine to another without too much trouble. When I ran into troubles with the scanner, partitions, antivirus, and others, the help of Launchpad support with Ubuntu was invaluable.
Le PC de bureau AsRock a commencé à planter. J'y ai donc installé Ubuntu 10.04, mais le problème a persisté et n’a été résolu que lorsque j'ai remplacé le disque dur et réinstallé Ubuntu. Cela fonctionnait très bien et je l’ai ajouté au réseau. J'ai alors décidé de construire une machine dernier cri basée sur une carte mère Asus de Maplin et un disque dur SATA (Le magasin d'informatique local m'a cédé un boitier gratuitement). J'ai également installé Ubuntu 10.04 et, quand la 12.04 a été proposé comme mise à niveau, je suis parvenu à la faire fonctionner. Je connais maintenant assez bien le nouvel environnement et je peux passer d'une machine à une autre sans trop de difficultés. S’il m’arrivait de rencontrer des problèmes avec le scanner, les partitions, les antivirus etc., l'aide du Launchpad Ubuntu était des plus précieuses.
So what to do next? The TV to computer interface looked interesting. I already had a basic Sky system, so, using a device called Neuros OSD, available from Amazon, I could record TV onto a USB stick or network. In addition, this is an open system which allowed access via telnet from a networked PC. I thought SSH looked interesting, but it was not installed. This has been a lot of fun to play with, but my wife did not agree and thought upgrading to Sky+, which allowed recording, was a lot more user friendly. I had to agree, but Neuros remains connected to the TV because it plays movies from USB sticks and is a good backup to Sky.
Alors, que faire ensuite ? Interfacer l’ordinateur et la télévision semblait intéressant. J'ai déjà eu un système Sky basique. Ainsi, à l'aide d'un dispositif appelé Neuros OSD, disponible sur Amazon, je pouvais enregistrer la TV sur une clé USB ou via le réseau. Qui plus est, il s'agit d'un système ouvert qui permet un accès telnet à partir d'un PC en réseau. Je pensais que SSH était intéressant, mais il n'était pas installé. Bricoler tout cela m'amusait beaucoup, mais ma femme n'était pas d'accord et pensait que passer à Sky+, qui permettait l'enregistrement, serait beaucoup plus convivial. J'ai dû en convenir, mais Neuros reste connecté au téléviseur, car il lit les films à partir de clés USB et est un bon complément de Sky.
By this time I was struggling up think up another feasible but interesting project, and started reading various Linux magazines. A lot of the content initially seemed beyond me, so I thought I would investigate C programming. It seemed a bit more academic than the projects I had already tried, and it was a job I could fit in at spare moments. A netbook seemed the answer, so I got a Toshiba unit – because my old Toshiba laptop still worked after 5 years of continuous use, although I had recently upgraded to a newer unit which runs Windows 7, which my wife was happy with. The Netbook came preloaded with Windows 7, so I dual loaded it with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I got most of my Windows programs running on it with the current exceptions of the chess program Fritz 8, which I use on the Netbook Windows 7 operating system, and Active sync for my pda, which I use on my old Win XP laptop. The difficulty which I have not solved is that I cannot get Wi-Fi to work on Ubuntu 12.04. I have made do with a Netgear USB wireless dongle to date. I am coming to grips with the terminal and using the command line, and am gradually trying out some of the ideas in magazines such as Full Circle and Linux Format. I am studying the Cloud, Virtual Box, and LXC containers to see what I am best able to make use of.
À cette époque, je tentais d’imaginer d’autres projets intéressants et réalisables, et j'ai commencé à lire plusieurs magazines Linux. Au départ, une bonne partie du contenu me semblait au-delà de mes capacités et je me suis alors intéressé à la programmation en langage C. Cela semblait un peu plus académique que les projets sur lesquels je m’étais essayé et c'était une activité à laquelle je pouvais me consacrer à mes moments perdus. Un Netbook semblait une bonne base, alors j'ai acheté un appareil Toshiba, parce que mon vieux portable Toshiba travaillait encore après 5 ans d'utilisation continue, bien que j’aie récemment effectué une mise à niveau vers un nouveau système qui tourne sous Windows 7 et dont mon épouse est pleinement satisfaite. Le Netbook est arrivé avec Windows 7 pré-installé. J’ai donc installé Ubuntu 12.04 LTS en double amorçage. La plupart de mes programmes Windows fonctionnent dessus, à l’exception du jeu d'échecs Fritz 8, que j’utilise sous Windows 7 sur le Netbook, et Active Sync pour mon pda, que j'utilise sur mon vieux portable sous Win XP. Le problème que je n'ai pas résolu est que je ne peux pas obtenir une connexion Wi-Fi qui fonctionne sous Ubuntu 12.04. Pour l’instant, je l’ai contourné via un dongle USB Wi-Fi Netgear. Je me suis mis au terminal et à la ligne de commande, et j’essaie progressivement quelques-unes des idées glanées dans des magazines tels que Full Circle et Linux Format. J'étudie le Cloud, Virtual Box et les conteneurs LXC pour voir ce qui correspondrait le mieux à mes besoins.
As far as hardware is concerned, I have faulty sectors on my Asus desktop hard drive, so the immediate task is to decide what to do regarding a backup and a new hard disk. I am very disappointed with this 1 TB Samsung hard disk. I have looked at tablets and phones, but apart from perhaps Android based devices, I see no real advantage for me at low cost. I am continuing with the programming tutorial and reading magazines, so perhaps some ideas will emerge from that work. I considered building a router on an old PC but the existing router supplied by my ISP is likely to be far more reliable than one based on a hard drive in an old PC. In fact, I have never bought a new desktop, only revived old ones or built custom units.
Sur le plan matériel, j'ai des secteurs défectueux sur le disque dur de mon Asus de bureau, de sorte que l’urgence du moment consiste à envisager une sauvegarde et un nouveau disque dur. Je suis très déçu par ce disque Samsung de 1 To . J'ai regardé du côté des tablettes et des téléphones, mais à part peut-être un dispositif sous Android, je ne vois rien de réellement intéressant pour moi à moindre coût. En fait, je n'ai jamais acheté de nouvel ordinateur de bureau, j’ai seulement remis en route d'anciennes machines ou j'ai assemblé des UC personnalisées.
In conclusion, I now have a total of 7 machines available to me: 2 running Win 7, 2 running Win XP, 2 running Ubuntu 10.04 and 2 running Ubuntu 12.04. I have one dual booted and one XP virtual machine, one is dedicated to printing and one I use for backup. I am reluctant to install other distros without long term support. I mainly use Linux, but my wife uses Windows 7, which was preloaded in the new Laptop at purchase. The jury is out as to where to go next, but the journey has been great fun.
Pour conclure, j'ai maintenant un total de 7 machines qui s'offrent à moi : 2 exécutant Windows 7, 2 exécutant Windows XP, 2 sous Ubuntu 10.04 et 2 sous Ubuntu 12.04. J'ai une machine en double amorçage et une machine virtuelle sous XP. L'une est dédiée à l’impression et l'autre est dédiée à la sauvegarde. J'hésite à installer d'autres distributions sans soutien à long terme. J'utilise principalement Linux, mais ma femme utilise Windows 7, qui était pré-installé dans le nouvel ordinateur portable. La question de savoir quelle sera la suite reste ouverte, mais cette balade reste très amusante.
