Home Server Would it be possible for someone out there to write an article(s) on setting up a home server? It should be running Ubuntu (of course), machines will do a network boot, data would be available on the server and the Internet will be too. Something that would be cheap, feasible and useful. Danish Lala Ubuntu Is Too Hot! My Dell Vostro 1550 laptop dual boots with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Windows 7 running side by side. I am a huge fan of Ubuntu, who tries to get things done in Ubuntu alone, and I always try to convince other people to switch to Ubuntu. But I am afraid of the overheating problem in Ubuntu systems. When I am working in Ubuntu, my laptop overheats quickly and seldom cools down to normal state, and the processor fans run almost all the time to cool down the processor. Besides the noise from the fan, the battery drains quickly due to the same reason. When compared to PC running in Windows 7, the battery drains out quickly when it runs in Ubuntu. I wish someone could write an article on solutions for this problem. Which may help me in making more Ubuntu fans Saravanan M
Un serveur domestique
Serait-il possible que quelqu'un écrive un/des article(s) sur la configuration d'un serveur domestique. Il devrait tourner sous Ubuntu (bien sûr), les machines démarreraient sur le réseau et les données, ainsi que le Net, seraient disponibles sur le serveur aussi. Quelque chose qui soit peu cher, faisable et utile.

Ubuntu s'échauffe trop !
Mon portable, un Dell Vostro 1550 est en double amorçage avec Ubuntu 12.04 LTS et Windows 7 qui tournent côte à côte. Je suis un énorme fan d'Ubuntu, j'essaie de tout faire en me servant uniquement d'Ubuntu et j'essaie toujours de convaincre les autres de changer pour Ubuntu. Mais j'ai peur du problème de surchauffe dans les systèmes Ubuntu.
Quand je travaille sous Ubuntu, le portable surchauffe rapidement et ne refroidit que rarement jusqu'à un état normal ; le ventilateur tourne presque tous le temps, essayant d'en refroidir le processeur. À part le désagrément du bruit, la batterie se vide rapidement aussi. Si je compare avec le PC tournant sous Windows 7, la batterie se vide plus rapidement sous Ubuntu.
J'aimerais bien que quelqu'un écrive un article donnant des solutions au problème de surchauffe, ce qui pourrait m'aider à faire plus de fans d'Ubuntu.

Scanning Gord, regarding your checklist for checking new distros. You could add scanning. This was the one problem that prevented me from ditching Windows until Ubuntu 11.04 came along and solved my problem. Michael Davies Chinese in LibreOffice A few days ago a friend asked about writing Japanese in LibreOffice. I pointed him to the article in FCM#43 (Command & Conquer by Lucas Westermann). He came back saying that it didn't work. Testing, I found that all I could get was a row of rectangles. Like the author of this piece I found: “Although Japanese entry worked perfectly on everything else, LO refused to show any Japanese characters (just empty/blank boxes) even though I had set the default Asian language to Japanese and checked the Asian languages option.” The author had a solution: “Turns out there’s another set of options under Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > Basic Fonts (Asian). Switching the font to Droid Sans Japanese solved the problem.” Although I haven't tried it (yet) the same method will probably work for Chinese and Korean (using Pinyin and ?Hangul). Brian

Gord, au sujet de votre liste des choses à vérifier dans les nouvelles distrib., vous pourriez ajouter la numérisation. C'était le seul problème qui m'a empêché d'abandonner Windows jusqu'à l'arrivée d'Ubuntu 11.04, qui a résolu mon problème.
Le chinois dans LibreOffice
Il y a quelques jours, un ami m'a demandé s'il était possible d'écrire en japonais dans LibreOffice. Je lui ai dit d'aller voir l'article dans le FCM n° 43 (Command & Conquer de Lucas Westermann). Il est revenu me dire que cela ne fonctionnait pas. Quand j'ai essayé moi-même, tout ce que j'avais était une rangée de rectangles.
Tout comme l'auteur, j'ai découvert que :
« Bien que la saisie en japonais fonctionnait parfaitement partout ailleurs, LO refusait d'afficher tout caractère japonais (que des cases vides), malgré le fait que la langue asiatique par défaut soit paramétrée au japonais et l'option langues asiatiques soir cochée. »
L'auteur avait une solution :
« Il s'avère qu'il y a d'autres options dans Outils > Options > LibreOffice Writer > Polices de base (asiatiques). La modification de la police en Droid Sans Japonais a résolu le problème. »
Je ne l'ai pas (encore) essayé, mais la même méthode devrait fonctionner pour le chinois et le coréen (avec Pinyin et ?Hangul).
