I was quite apprehensive about buying this Internet media player as there were so many negative reviews about it, but I decided to take a leap of faith (in Google) and buy it anyway. I’m glad I did! What’s In The Box The box is small! I expected to receive a box about the size of a DVD player, but the cardboard box is about 8” x 6” x 4”. Inside is the Sony box itself, the remote, batteries (for said remote), power cable, and an IR blaster (more on that later). Setting Up Hooking the box up is easy enough. You plug in the power cable and (not supplied) HDMI cable. Plug the power cable into the wall socket and the HDMI cable into your TV. I’m using the box by itself, but you can hook your cable/satellite box into the Sony box. This lets the Sony box control the displaying of your cable/satellite box allowing you to do fancy things like picture-in-picture and such-like.
L'idée d'acheter ce lecteur de média internet me rendait de plus en plus inquiet puisqu'il y avait tant de critiques négatives à son sujet, mais j'ai décidé de faire confiance (à Google) et de l'acheter de toute façon. Je suis très content de l'avoir fait !
Ce qui se trouve dans la boîte
La boîte est petite ! Je m'attendais à recevoir un paquet de la taille d'un lecteur de DVD, mais l'emballage en carton fait à peu près 20,3 cm x 15,4 cm x 10cm. À l'intérieur se trouve la box Sony elle-même, la télécommande, les piles (pour la dite télécommande), un câble d'alimentation et un blaster IR (plus à son sujet plus tard).
La mise en place
Connecter la box est très facile. Il faut connecter le câble d'alimentation et le câble HDMI (non fourni). Ensuite, branchez le câble d'alimentation dans une prise murale et connectez le câble HDMI à votre TV.
J'utilise la box seule, mais vous pouvez connecter votre box câble/satellite à la box Sony. Ceci permet à la box Sony de contrôler l'affichage de la box câble/satellite, ce qui vous donne la possibilité d'utiliser des fonctions sophistiquées comme PIP (image dans l'image), etc.

Configuration When the box is first turned on, it will pair itself with the remote as the remote control is bluetooth. No need to point the remote directly at a sensor. There is none. Using bluetooth means you don’t even need to point the remote, just press the buttons and it’ll be detected as long as you’re within range of the box. You now get a quick introduction on how to use the remote control. This is a very special remote (more on it later), but suffice it to say that it has buttons and touch-pad on one side, and a full QWERTY keyboard on the reverse. Now we’re on to setting up the box itself. You sign in with your Google account, set the language, time zone, connection to the internet (wired, or wireless), and your screen size. You then configure the IR blaster. IR Blaster The IR blaster is a little widget that you get with the box – which you don’t have to use if you don’t want to, but it lets you control another box with the Sony remote. Initially, I was using it with my TV, or so I thought. I had the IR blaster pointing at my TV’s remote sensor. On telling the Sony box that my TV is a Samsung (and model number), I can now switch the TV off/on using the Sony remote. Nifty! It was only when I noticed the IR remote covered up that I realised the Sony box is actually controlling the TV via the HDMI cable. More on that in a second.
Configuration
Lors du premier allumage, la box reconnaîtra la télécommande car celle-ci est bluetooth. Nul besoin de diriger la télécommande vers un capteur. Il n'y en a pas. L'utilisation de bluetooth signifie que vous n'avez même pas besoin d'orienter la télécommande, il suffit d'appuyer sur les touches et elle sera détectée du moment où vous ne vous trouvez pas trop loin de la box.
Ensuite, vous avez droit à une brève présentation de l'utilisation de la télécommande. C'est une télécommande très particulière (et j'en dirai davantage plus tard), mais je me contenterai de dire qu'il y a des touches et un pavé tactile d'un côté et un clavier AZERTY complet de l'autre.
Nous sommes maintenant prêts à configurer la box même. Vous vous connectez avec votre compte Google, choisissez la langue, le fuseau horaire, la connexion au net (câblée ou sans fil) et la taille de votre écran. Puis c'est au tour de l'IR blaster.
L'IR blaster
L'IR blaster est un petit bidule livré avec la box ; vous n'êtes pas obligé de vous en servir si vous n'en voulez pas, mais il vous permet de contrôler une autre box avec la télécommande Sony.
Au départ, je l'utilisais avec ma TV, du moins, c'est ce que je pensais. Je dirigeais l'IR blaster vers le capteur de ma télé. après avoir dit à la box Sony que mon téléviseur est un Samsung (avec le numéro du modèle), je peux à présent allumer/éteindre la télé avec la télécommande Sony. Impressionnant ! Ce n'est que quand j'ai remarqué que le capteur était masqué que je me suis rendu compte que la box Sony contrôlait la télé via le câble HDMI. J'en dirai plus dans une seconde.

Update No sooner had I completed the setup, and searched feverishly for Netflix (which I couldn’t find), I was presented with a pop-up telling me a system update was available. Carry on! After the update, I now had the Netflix application. Phew! I also had Google Play, Chrome (browser), Live TV (only of use if you’re connecting a TV/satellite box through the Sony), Media Player, Photos (viewer), [Google] Play Movies, [Google] Search, Settings, Socialife (Twitter and Facebook only it seems), Sony Entertainment, Twitter, and a couple of other items. I installed [Google] Play Music, to try streaming audio (which worked fine), and Plex which will let me stream media from my desktop PC to the Sony box. The Remote As I hinted at earlier, the remote is very special and took a lot of criticism in reviews, but I love it! On one side you have several on/off buttons (for TV/amp/other) and some selection buttons to control a PVR/TV. Just above center you have a D-pad with selection button in the center. Either side of the D-pad are buttons to do picture-in-picture, back, home, and menu. Taking up about half of the remote is the touch-pad, which is clickable. Touching this brings up a mouse pointer on screen. Below the touch-pad are function, play, pause, and info buttons. Lastly, there are some coloured buttons. Flipping the remote over, you have a full QWERTY keyboard! Pressing function, then search, will enable a backlight to the keyboard, handy for those late night browsing sessions. On the right side of the remote are volume, mute, and channel buttons. The remote is also motion sensitive for controlling games.
La mise à jour
Dès que j'ai terminé la configuration et cherché Netflix fiévreusement (sans succès), une fenêtre contextuelle m'indiquait qu'une mise à jour du système était disponible. Allons-y !
Après la mise à jour, j'avais l'application Netflix. Ouf ! J'avais également Google Play, Chrome (navigateur), Live TV (utile uniquement si vous connectez une box TV/satellite au moyen de la Sony, Media player, Photos (visionneuse), [Google] Play Movies, [Google] Search, Settings, Réseaux sociaux (seulement Twitter et Facebook, me semble-t-il), Sony Entertainment, Twitter et deux ou trois autres.
J'ai installé [Google] Play music, pour essayer l'audio en continu (streaming - ce qui a très bien fonctionné), et Plex, qui me permettra de diffuser des média à partir de mon PC de bureau vers la box Sony.
La télécommande
Comme j'ai laissé entendre plus tôt, la télécommande est très spéciale et a été très critiquée, mais je l'adore ! D'un côté, il y a plusieurs touches on/off (pour la TV/amp/autre) et quelques touches de sélection pour contrôler un PVR/TV. Juste au-dessus du centre, il y a un D-pad avec un bouton sélection au milieu. De chaque côté du D-pad il y a des boutons pour faire PIP, marche arrière, accueil et menu. Environ la moitié de la télécommande est dédiée au pavé tactile, qui est cliquable. Touchez ceci et vous verrez le pointeur d'une souris à l'écran. Sous le pavé tactile se trouvent les touches fonction, play, pause et info. Pour finir, il y a quelques touches de couleur.
De l'autre côté, se trouve un clavier AZERTY complet ! Appuyer sur fonction, puis recherche, activera le rétroéclairage, ce qui est utile pour surfer sur le net tard la nuit.
Côté droit de la télécommande, il y a les touches volume, mute et chaînes. La télécommande est aussi sensible au mouvement, pour le contrôle de jeux.

Video I haven’t tried purchasing/renting videos via Play/Sony, but certainly YouTube and Netflix worked flawlessly and the picture quality was excellent. Audio Again, haven’t tried using Play/Sony stores, but several tracks on my Google Play/Music account worked fine after installing the Google Music app. Streaming Media Most of my media is on my desktop PC. Thankfully, getting this playing on the Sony box was easy enough – after installing Plex (paid app, but is less than £1) on the Sony box and on my desktop PC. Plex on the desktop is a media server which will, after initial set up, run through and catalogue all the media in the folders you’ve given it. Plex will then sit and wait for connections before serving up media. Installing Plex on the desktop either means downloading, and installing, the .deb file from the Plex site (http://www.plexapp.com/), or adding the relevant repo. You then install the Plex media player on the Sony box. On the Sony, you click Plex; it will search for a Plex server, and then let you play your media. Simple as that!
Vidéo
Je n'ai pas essayé d'acheter ou de louer des vidéos via Play/Sony, mais YouTube et Netflix fonctionnaient parfaitement et la qualité de l'image était excellente.
Audio
De même, je n'ai pas essayé d'utiliser les magasins Play/Sony, mais plusieurs titres sur mon compte Google Play/Music fonctionnaient très bien après l'installation de l'appli Google Music.
Média en streaming
La plupart de mes médias se trouvent sur mon PC de bureau. Heureusement, réussir à les faire lire par la box Sony était très facile, après l'installation de Plex (qui coûte moins de 4 €) sur la box Sony et sur mon PC de bureau. Sur celui-ci, Plex est un serveur de médias qui, après la configuration initiale, parcourra et cataloguera tous les médias dans les dossiers que vous avez indiqués. Ensuite, Plex attendra des connexions avant de présenter les médias.
Installer Plex sur l'ordinateur de bureau veut dire soit télécharger, puis installer, le fichier .deb du site Plex (http://www.plexapp.com/), soit ajouter le dépôt nécessaire. Vous pouvez alors installer le lecteur de média Plex sur la box Sony. Sur la Sony, vous cliquez sur Plex et il recherchera un serveur Plex, puis vous permettra de lire vos médias. C'est aussi simple que cela !

Be patient, as Plex can take a while to catalogue your media as it will also fetch metadata and relevant images. Plex can play/stream pretty much any audio/video file you throw at it. Additions Recently a Chrome extension was released called Chromemote (http://www.chromemote.com/). What this does is let you control your Google TV box from within Chrome. For example: on my desktop PC, I can click the Chromemote icon in Chrome, switch on my Google TV box, switch on my TV, and then have full control over my Google TV box without even picking up my remote control! I must say, it’s pretty awesome. Not only that, but it gives you the option to ‘fling’ almost anything to your box. I could start a YouTube video, then think ‘hey, this is pretty cool’ and fling it to my box to watch on the big screen. If you have a guest/partner and want to show them something, you can fling a web page to Chrome on your Google TV box.
Soyez patient : Plex peut prendre du temps à cataloguer vos médias, puisqu'il cherchera également les méta-données et les images correspondantes.
Plex sait diffuser/lire à peu près tout fichier audio/vidéo que vous lui donnez.
Des suppléments
Une extension Chrome, qui s'appelle Chromemote (http://chromemote.com:) est récemment sortie. Elle vous donne la possibilité de contrôler votre box Google TV à partir de Chrome. Par exemple : sur mon PC de bureau, je peux cliquer sur l'icône Chromemote dans Chrome, allumer ma box Google TV, allumer ma télé, puis contrôler parfaitement ma box Google TV sans jamais prendre la télécommande en main. Je dois dire que cela m'a vraiment bluffé.
Et pas seulement ça, mais il vous donne l'option de « fling »(envoyer rapidement) presque tout à votre box. Je peux démarrer une vidéo sur YouTube, puis penser « Eh, c'est très sympa, ça !» et l'envoyer à ma box pour la regarder sur grand écran.
Si vous avez un invité/partenaire et voulez lui montrer quelque chose, vous pouvez envoyer une page web à Chrome sur votre box Google TV.

Conclusion I’ve said many good things about the Sony Google TV box; what’s the down side? Apps. There aren’t that many apps available for the Sony box. While it does use Google Play as its source, you’re limited to only apps that are known to work on Google TV. However, as I write this review, it is possible to ‘side-load’ apps by loading the APK file. There are some good apps in Play like AirDroid, Evernote, and the like. Moving between menus and items feels a bit sluggish, but that’s nothing major. It could be because the box is using Android 3.2 and not the buttery Jelly Bean. Even with those negative points, I’m a happy chappy. It does everything I needed it to do, and more. Previously, I had to use my Xbox for Netflix and TV, and my Acer Revo for streaming media. Now I have everything in one package. Now, if we could have a Jelly Bean update… that’d be the icing on the cake!
Conclusion
J'ai dit beaucoup de bonnes choses au sujet de la box Google TV de Sony ; quels sont les inconvénients ? Les applis. Il n'y en a pas beaucoup de disponibles pour la box Sony. Alors qu'elle utilise Google Play comme source, vous êtes limité aux applis connues pour fonctionner sur Google TV. Cependant, au moment où j'écris cette critique, il est possible de « sideload » des applis en téléchargeant le fichier APK vers votre ordinateur d'abord. Il y a quelques bonnes applis dans Play comme AirDroid, Evernote et ainsi de suite.
Bouger entre les menus et les éléments donne l'impression d'une certaine lenteur, mais ce n'est rien de très important. C'est peut-être dû au fait que la box utilise Android 3.2 et non pas Jelly Bean qui est lisse et fluide.
Même avec ces points négatifs, je suis ravi. Elle fait tout ce dont j'avais besoin et plus encore. Avant, je devais utiliser ma XBox pour Netflix et la télé et mon Acer Revo pour la diffusion des médias. Maintenant j'ai tout en un seul endroit.
Si seulement on pouvait avoir une mise à niveau vers Jelly Bean… ce serait la cerise sur le gâteau !
