The first time I ever heard about Linux was five years ago, I think. It was in our town library, where they were installing Ubuntu on a PC. That way, everybody willing to learn this new OS could have a go. I even remember multiple CDs lying on the counter waiting for somebody to take them home. And I did. I think it was Feisty Fawn or Gutsy Gibbon. The first time I gave it a try, I was amazed and confused at the same time. Remember, I'm coming from a Windows-only environment. Didn't know the first thing about open source and what it meant or stood for. The only thing I knew was that it was free and not some pirated copy. I'll never forget my first reaction after having taken my first looks at the screen: “what the ……?” This was something I didn't expect. That feeling didn't leave me for a long time. I always thought about Ubuntu in those days as “that other OS.” But it was knowledge that I was missing. Knowledge of what Ubuntu stood for. (And still does.) After playing around with it for some time, I forgot about Ubuntu for a while.
La première fois que j'ai entendu parler de Linux, c'était, je pense, il y a cinq ans. C'était dans la bibliothèque municipale, où ils étaient en train d'installer Ubuntu sur un PC. Comme cela, tout un chacun qui voulait bien apprendre ce nouveau système d'exploitation l'aurait à disposition.
Je me souviens même de multiples CD laissés sur le comptoir, attendant que quelqu'un les rapporte à la maison. Et je l'ai fait. Je pense qu'il s'agissait de Feisty Fawn ou de Gutsy Gibbon.
La première fois que je l'ai essayé, j'étais à la fois étonné et perplexe.
Rappelez-vous, je venais d'un environnement Windows à 100 %. Je ne savais rien au sujet de l'Open Source, sa philosophie et ce qu'il signifie. Tout ce que je savais, c'était que c'était gratuit et légal.
Je me souviendrai toujours de ma première réaction après avoir vu l'écran pour la première fois : « que diable ……? »
C'était quelque chose à laquelle je ne m'attendais pas. Ce sentiment-là ne m'a pas quitté pendant un bon bout de temps. À cette époque, je pensais toujours à Ubuntu en termes de « cet autre système d'exploitation ».
En fait, je n'avais pas assez de connaissances. Des connaissances de ce qu'il représentait (et représente encore).
Après m'être amusé avec assez loguement, j'ai oublié Ubuntu pendant un certain temps.

It was when I attended night-school, for a bachelor’s in IT, that I was again put in contact with Ubuntu. But this time, with much more background to it. This was around the time that Jaunty Jackalope hit the streets. It was there, at school, that I learned much more about the OS itself, about its rich features, the way it works, and so on. From that time on, I've been an enthusiastic user of Ubuntu. Whether it's the desktop version or the server, I'm liking it and using it. At work, there's a mix of Windows and Apple workstations, but I'm glad to see the introduction of Linux. It’s on the server side, but it's a start. When I look back at our town library now, I'm more than happy to see that all of the workstations, public and private, have switched to a Linux OS. Kubuntu, to be precise. So that's my little story about how I came into contact with Ubuntu. It's been some years now, and most of the hardware at home is running Ubuntu and doing just fine. Most people I know these days, consider Linux as their weapon of choice, when it comes to installing a fresh OS on the hardware. I especially like the fact that it doesn't matter whether it's old or new hardware. Just install the OS and run it. (This is a great argument to get people using Ubuntu.)
C'est pendant que je suivais des cours du soir en vue d'obtenir une licence en informatique que j'ai à nouveau rencontré Ubuntu, mais, cette fois-ci avec beaucoup plus d'informations.
C'est à peu près au moment où Jaunty Jackalope est paru. C'est là, à la fac, que j'ai appris bien davantage au sujet du système d'exploitation lui-même, ses très riches caractéristiques, la façon dont il fonctionne et ainsi de suite.
Depuis cette époque, je suis un utilisateur passionné d'Ubuntu. Que ce soit la version pour ordinateur de bureau ou celle pour serveur, je l'aime et l'utilise beaucoup.
Au travail, il y a un mélange de postes de travail sous Windows et sous Apple, mais je suis content de constater que Linux commence à s'y frayer un chemin aussi, côté serveur, mais c'est mieux que rien.
Maintenant, quand je vois la bibliothèque municipale, je suis ravi de constater que tous les postes de travail, publics et privés, ont migré vers un système d'exploitation Linux. Pour être précis, Kubuntu.
Voilà donc l'histoire de ma rencontre avec Ubuntu. Cela fait pas mal d'années maintenant et, à la maison, la plupart du matériel tourne sous Ubuntu et fonctionne à merveille. La plupart de mes connaissances actuelles considèrent Linux comme leur arme de prédilection, quand il faut installer un nouveau système d'exploitation sur leur matériel. J'aime surtout le fait que l'âge du matériel - ancien ou nouveau - n'ait que peu d'importance. Il suffit d'y installer le système d'exploitation et de l'exécuter. (C'est un argument de taille pour convaincre des gens d'utiliser Ubuntu.)
