It started with Ubuntu 07.10 when a friend showed me a Knoppix Live-CD, and then I Googled about it, found Ubuntu and asked for a CD from ShipIt. At this time I had an HP laptop with a 1.7 GHz Centrino Mobile processor and 768 DDR Ram. I dual booted it with XP and I loved Ubuntu. I didn't notice big performance gains but I loved the idea of open source software. The only problem was that I couldn't connect Ubuntu to the Internet. I was then in Central Asia and had to connect to the Internet thru PPPoE protocol or something like that, and it was impossible to do it in Ubuntu, for me at least. So I had my laptop connected to a PC with XP thru a wired connection in order to have Internet on my laptop.
Tout a commencé avec Ubuntu 7.10 quand un ami m'a montré un Live CD Knoppix et que, en le recherchant sur Google, je suis tombé sur Ubuntu et j'ai demandé un CD à partir de ShipIt.
À cette époque, j'avais un portable HP avec un processeur Centrino Mobile à 1,7 GHz. Je l'ai configuré en double amorçage avec XP et j'adorais Ubuntu. Je n'ai pas remarqué de grands gains en performance, mais j'aimais l'idée des logiciels Open Source.
Le seul problème était que je n'arrivais pas à connecter Ubuntu à Internet. Je me trouvais alors en Asie Centrale et devais me connecter au Net avec le protocole PPPoE, ou quelque chose comme ça, et c'était impossible sous Ubuntu, du moins pour moi. J'ai donc connecté mon portable par câble à un PC sous XP pour pouvoir avoir une connexion Internet sur le portable.
Also, there was a very powerful dictionary that didn't run in Wine, so eventually I used XP most of the time. However, I started to use open source software in XP whenever it was possible, so I installed Thunderbird, Firefox, OpenOffice, etc. Then I moved to another country in 2009 and bought my current laptop, an Asus K50ij from BestBuy. Ubuntu worked great but the webcam was upside down so I eventually stopped using Ubuntu and used Win7 a lot more. In time, the camera issue was fixed but not in Skype. I Googled a lot and found a transitory solution that fixed the issue, but I had to do it every time I logged into my session*. So, again I eventually started to use Win7 because it didn't have that problem.
Il y avait aussi un très puissant dictionnaire qui ne s'exécutait pas dans Wine et j'ai donc fini par utiliser XP la plupart du temps. Toutefois, j'ai commencé à utiliser des logiciels Open Source sous XP quand c'était possible et j'ai donc installé Thunderbird, Firefox, OpenOffice, etc.
Puis, en 2009, j'ai déménagé vers un autre pays et j'ai acheté le portable que j'utilise encore actuellement ; c'est un Asus K50ij de BestBuy. Ubuntu fonctionnait très bien, mais la webcam était à l'envers et, à la longue, j'ai cessé d'utiliser Ubuntu, me servant beaucoup plus de Win7. À terme, le problème du webcam fut réparé, mais pas dans Skype. En faisant beaucoup de recherches sur Google, j'ai trouvé une solution incomplète qui a résolu le problème, mais je devais le mettre en œuvre chaque fois que je me connectais*. C'est ainsi que, à nouveau, j'ai recommencé à utiliser Win7, parce qu'il n'avait pas ce problème-là.
I wish I could fix that issue and use Ubuntu 12.04, which I really liked. I liked also Lubuntu and Bodhi Linux because I could see significant performance gains, but the issue in Skype appeared on those distros as well. Right now I use only Win7 and I hope to have more luck when I buy another laptop. I don´t think it will be in the near future because my laptop works great so far, and laptops have become very expensive in my country. It´s a pity because I don´t use Russian a lot anymore and there are places like Wictionary and others that do the job very well. However, Skype is a must for me now. My friends don't use Google Talk, which could be a replacement for Skype, so it's Win7 for the moment but I am looking forward to going back to Ubuntu. Also, I don´t like to dual boot.
J'aimerais tant trouver une solution à ce problème pour pouvoir utiliser Ubuntu 12.04 que j'ai vraiment aimé. J'aimais bien Lubuntu et Bodhi Linux aussi, parce que j'y voyais des performances améliorées de façon significative, mais le problème dans Skype était également présent sous ces distrib..
Actuellement, je n'utilise que Win7 et j'ai l'espoir d'être plus chanceux quand j’achèterai un nouveau portable. Je ne pense pas que cela arrivera dans un futur proche, car mon portable fonctionne à merveille jusqu'ici et le coût des portables dans mon pays a énormément augmenté. C'est bien dommage, parce que je n'utilise plus beaucoup le russe et il y a des endroits comme, notamment, Wictionary qui font le travail très bien. Cependant, je suis obligé d'utiliser Skype. Mes amis n'utilisent pas Google Talk, qui pourrait remplacer Skype, et je dois me cantonner actuellement à Win7, mais j'attends avec impatience de pouvoir retourner à Ubuntu. Et, aussi, je n'aime pas le double amorçage.
