&I have been using the Ubuntu strain of Linux for about six years. I dabbled with SuSE in the mid-nineties but did not get very involved as this was the start of the age of Microsoft and Windows.
J’utilise la distribution Linux Ubuntu depuis environ six ans. Au milieu des années 90, j'avais joué un peu avec SuSE, mais je n'étais pas très motivé et ce fut le début de l'ère Microsoft et Windows.
Since my incursion into the world of Linux, the scenario has changed completely. Gone are the days of having to fight with the software to get it to recognize certain hardware. As did many other Ubuntu users, I switched to Linux Mint as soon as Unity came to light. Now, after the years, I am more up-to-speed with the command line and the intricacies of Linux.
Depuis ma découverte du monde Linux, le scénario a complètement changé. Il est loin le temps où je me battais avec les logiciels pour faire reconnaître certains matériels. Comme beaucoup d'autres utilisateurs d'Ubuntu, je suis passé à Linux Mint dès qu'Unity est apparu. Maintenant, après des années, je connais nettement mieux la ligne de commande ainsi que les subtilités de Linux.
An interesting development, in my case, has to do with kids and my eleven year-old grandson and all of his mates. When he was six, he was given an old laptop with Windows ME. An organ grinder would be a friendly description. I installed PC/OS Linux and it worked a treat, well enough for him to play Club Penguin. He was then given, as a present, a netbook with Windows XP. I changed this to Ubuntu and subsequently to Linux Mint. So he has been using Linux for five years with no complaints. That is until a couple of months ago when he started at an up-market and very demanding Secondary School in London with a very noticeable uniform and strong dress code. His IT Teacher told him that as a Linux user he is very much on his own as the school uses Macs and MS products; no Linux. This was a serious setback to someone just starting a secondary education. The face of my grandson said it all.
Dans mon cas, un développement intéressant avait trait à des enfants ainsi qu'à mon petit-fils de 11 ans et à tous ses copains. Quand il avait six ans, on lui a donné un vieux PC portable sous Windows ME - ou plutôt un vieil « orgue de barbarie », ce qui conviendrait mieux comme description. J'ai installé PC/OS Linux dessus et cela a très bien fonctionné, en tous cas assez bien pour qu'il puisse jouer à Club Pingouin. On lui a ensuite offert un netbook sous Windows XP. J'ai installé Ubuntu dessus à la place, puis Linux Mint. Donc, il utilise Linux depuis cinq ans maintenant, sans aucune plainte. Jusqu'à il y a quelques mois avant qu'il ne commence ses études secondaires dans une école réputée de Londres, connue entre autres pour son uniforme et son code vestimentaire très exigeant. Son professeur d'informatique lui a dit que, en tant qu'utilisateur Linux, il serait seul, puisque l'école utilise Mac et les produits Microsoft, pas Linux. Ce fut un revers sérieux pour quelqu'un qui débute à l'école secondaire et le visage de mon petit-fils en disait long…
I decided to give a helping (if not devious) hand. A dual boot computer would solve this anomaly. However, finding a computer that does not have Windows 8 pre-installed is not so easy. There was an article in FCM about companies in the UK that sell computers with no operating system, but I live in Spain and all the major department stores and computer suppliers here insist on selling you Windows 8. I managed to find a computer consultancy company that supplied me with a high-spec notebook with no OS and a Spanish keyboard. There is very little difference between an English and Spanish keyboard.
J'ai donc décidé de lui donner un coup de main : un ordinateur en double-amorçage permettrait de résoudre ce problème. Cependant, trouver un ordinateur sans Windows 8 pré-installé n'est pas si facile. Il y avait un article dans le FCM sur des sociétés au Royaume-Uni qui vendent des ordinateurs sans système d'exploitation, mais je vis en Espagne et tous les grands magasins et les fournisseurs d'ordinateurs insistent pour vous vendre Windows 8. J'ai réussi à trouver une société de conseil en informatique qui m'a fourni un ordinateur portable haut de gamme sans OS avec un clavier espagnol. Il y a en fait très peu de différences entre un clavier anglais et un clavier espagnol.
I used a boot-able Gparted CD to format the hard disk and then installed Windows 7. Using the Windows Disk Manager, I shrank the MS partition and then using Gparted again to create a swap partition and an extended partition for Linux. The Windows installation was a nightmare as it would not recognize Wi-Fi, LAN, bluetooth, or the keyboard, out of the box. You have to download the drivers, which takes forever to find the right ones. There is also the added frustration of having to install some kind of anti-virus software. The Linux Mint 15 64-bit installation worked like a dream, instantly recognizing all hardware at a glance. With the dual boot installation, Linux Mint boots by default, with a 10-second delay if you want to boot into Windows. I installed all the extra packages that would be of use to an eleven year-old school boy and sent it off to the UK.
J'ai utilisé Gparted sur un Live CD pour formater le disque dur et ensuite j'ai installé Windows 7. Avec le gestionnaire de disque de Windows, j'ai réduit la partition Microsoft, puis j'ai utilisé à nouveau Gparted pour créer une partition de swap et une partition étendue pour Linux. L'installation de Windows a été un cauchemar car il ne reconnaissait ni les adaptateurs Wi-Fi, LAN, Bluetooth, ni le clavier dès l'installation. Vous devez télécharger les pilotes et, pour trouver les bons, cela prend une éternité. Il y a aussi une frustration supplémentaire : celle d'avoir à installer un anti-virus quelconque. Linux Mint 15 64 bits s'est installé comme dans un rêve et a reconnu tout le matériel immédiatement. Avec l'installation en double-amorçage, Linux démarre par défaut, ou, si vous voulez démarrer sous Windows, il faut attendre 10 secondes. J'ai installé ensuite tous les paquets qui me semblaient utiles à un écolier de 11 ans et je l'ai envoyé en Grande-Bretagne.
The feedback I have had so far from my grandson is: “awesome, all my classmates are very jealous, and my IT teacher is really impressed.” I am sure over the coming months the school may change tack when they see the huge advantages of Linux.
Les commentaires que j'ai eus de mon petit-fils là-bas ? « Trop bien, tous mes camarades de classe sont très jaloux et mon professeur d'informatique est vraiment impressionné. » Je suis sûr que dans les mois à venir, l' école pourra changer de politique quand ils verront les énormes avantages de Linux.
Regarding the saga of MS and Windows 8, the company is going in the wrong direction. I can state my opinion with respect to the Spanish market. People are not buying Windows 8 computers because it is for touchscreens and these are so much more expensive. It also requires a lot of RAM. The 28% unemployment in Spain may also be another reason. If you want to install Windows 8 on a machine running XP, Vista or 7, you have to get a bank loan to buy the software as there is no upgrade available. In several major stores that sell computer equipment here in Spain, I asked about the sales of Windows 8 machines and the answer was a very negative look that they are not selling.
En ce qui concerne la saga de MS et de Windows 8, l'entreprise va dans la mauvaise direction. C'est mon opinion en ce qui concerne le marché espagnol. Les gens ici n'achètent pas d’ordinateurs sous Windows 8, car ce système est conçu pour les écrans tactiles et ceux-ci sont beaucoup trop chers. Windows 8 exige aussi beaucoup de RAM. En Espagne le taux de chômage atteint les 28 % et c'est peut-être une autre raison. Si vous voulez installer Windows 8 sur une machine fonctionnant sous XP, Vista ou 7, vous devez obtenir un prêt bancaire pour acheter le logiciel puisqu'il n'y a pas de mise à jour de disponible. Dans plusieurs grands magasins qui vendent du matériel informatique ici, en Espagne, j'ai demandé comment étaient les ventes de machines sous Windows 8 et la réponse a été très négative puisqu'ils ne se vendent pas.
