Even though my main Computer is an Acer C720 Chromebook, I've got a secondary Laptop that normally runs Windows that has been recently running Windows 8.1 Pro alongside the Windows 10 Technical Preview in a dual-boot setup. But today, the Windows 8.1 Install has been playing up and I decided to wipe the HDD and start again with ether Windows 8.1 only, Windows 10 Technical Preview only, or using the same dual-boot setup.

While backing up my Windows 8.1 Partition (mostly personal files and downloads), I came across the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS .iso that I downloaded ages ago. So, instead of going with a Windows Install, I made an Install DVD for Ubuntu 14.04 to go back to Ubuntu on my secondary Laptop.

Bien que mon ordinateur principal soit un Acer C720 Chromebook, je possède également un ordinateur portable secondaire qui, en temps normal, fonctionne sous Windows, récemment sous Windows 8.1 Pro à côté de la « Technical Preview » de Windows 10 sur une installation en dual-boot. Mais aujourd'hui, mon installation de Windows 8.1 avait un comportement étrange et je décidai d'effacer le disque dur et de réinstaller, soit seulement Windows 8.1, soit seulement la « Technical Preview » de Windows 10, ou de remettre la même installation en dual-boot.

Tandis que je sauvegardais ma partition Windows 8.1 (principalement des fichiers personnels et des téléchargements), je suis retombé sur le fichier .iso d'Ubuntu 14.04 LTS que j'avais téléchargé il y a déjà quelque temps. Ainsi, au lieu de partir sur une installation de Windows, je fis un DVD d'installation d'Ubuntu 14.04 pour le remettre sur mon ordinateur portable secondaire.

The Ubuntu 14.04 Install went as smooth as Ubuntu Installs always go, and it even detected that I was connected to the Internet which hasn't happened for a long time when Installing Ubuntu. Once I'd rebooted, I thought I'd burn the Video DVD that was giving me no end of problems in Windows, so I opened up the Brasero CD/DVD burning program and this is where I ran into a few problems.

It seems as though Brasero doesn't come with a couple of dependencies for DVD Video burning installed, and threw up an error when trying to burn the DVD. Brasero requires the mplex (GStreamer Plug-in) and dvdauthor (Application) installed to burn video DVDs. A quick search in the Ubuntu Software Centre didn't find either of the required dependencies, so I tried using the sudo apt get command in the Terminal – which threw an error as it has been that long since I last used the Terminal to do installs (back when Saucy Salamander was being Developed). I'd forgotten the exact apt command to get and Install a package via the Terminal, probably due to using Chrome OS – the only Linux based OS other than Mac OS that doesn't require much in the way of working in the Terminal (so much so that the Terminal is hidden away in the Chrome OS Developer Mode). I then Installed the Synaptic Package Manager and was able to find dvdauthor, but was unable to find mplex.

L'installation d'Ubuntu 14.04 se passa simplement, comme toute installation d'Ubuntu, et elle détecta même que j'étais connecté à Internet ce qui ne m'était pas arrivé depuis longtemps pendant une installation d'Ubuntu. Une fois que j’eus redémarré, je pensai que je graverais le DVD vidéo qui me posait de gros problèmes sous Windows, j'ouvris donc le programme de gravure de CD/DVD Brasero et c'est à partir de là que les problèmes commencèrent.

Il semble que quelques dépendances requises pour la gravure de DVD ne sont pas installées avec Brasero et ce dernier affichait une erreur pendant l'essai de gravure du DVD. Brasero requiert le mplex (plugin Gstreamer) et dvdauthor (une application) pour pouvoir graver des DVD. Une rapide recherche dans la Logithèque Ubuntu ne trouvant ni l'une ni l'autre de ces dépendances, j'essayai donc en utilisant la commande apt-get dans le terminal - qui afficha une erreur puisque cela faisait longtemps que je n'avais pas utilisé le terminal pour effectuer des installations (à l'époque la version Saucy Salamander était en développement). J'avais oublié la commande apt exacte pour récupérer et installer un paquet via le terminal, probablement à force d'utiliser Chrome OS - le seul système d'exploitation basé sur Linux autre que Mac OS qui ne nécessite pas une grande utilisation du terminal (à tel point que le terminal est caché dans le mode Développeur de Chrome OS). J'installai alors le gestionnaire de paquets Synaptic et fus enfin capable de trouver le programme dvdauthor, mais pas mplex.

So I've currently put my venture back into fully using Ubuntu on my secondary Laptop while I either do some full-on digging around in Synaptic Package or the Software Centre or even dig around for the correct apt command to download and install mplex via the Terminal. But, since I needed the DVD burning for Friday 24th October, and another copy for Tuesday 28th of October, I ended up doing the only viable option until I've got the time to sort it out properly, and installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview. But, as I tend to use only my Chromebook, I don't know how long my secondary Laptop will end up with Windows back on it.

I love using Ubuntu and Linux over Windows, but the problems that I've encountered after having a long absence from Ubuntu and the full Linux experience, have done only one real thing – which is show me how simple and easy it can be to use Linux – if it's done in a consumer orientated and consumer friendly way Like Google has done with Chrome OS. Windows is ok for people who want something that just works, but is proprietary and prone to viruses; Chrome OS is for people who want something that just works, is Linux based, and who don't mind living in the Cloud; Mac OS is for people who want something that just works, is more mainstream like Windows along with being a proprietary OS, but also *nix based, whereas Linux based OS's like Ubuntu are more of a nerdy OS for someone who doesn’t mind getting their hands dirty in the Terminal, and don’t mind spending hours getting things all working. I'm the nerdy type, but since using Chrome OS, I don’t seem to be able to find the time to mess around in forums and in the Terminal trying to find what I need to get something done, then have to spend twice as long troubleshooting why the command didn’t work.

Je mets actuellement mon énergie dans l'utilisation complète d'Ubuntu sur mon portable secondaire pendant que je fais des recherches très approfondies sur Synaptic ou la Logithèque ou même la bonne commande apt pour pouvoir télécharger et installer mplex via le terminal. Mais, puisque j'avais besoin du DVD gravé pour le vendredi 24 octobre, et d'une autre copie pour le mardi 28, je finis par envisager la seule option viable jusqu'à ce que je trouve le temps de résoudre ces problèmes dans les règles de l'art, et j'installai la « Technical Preview » de Windows 10. Mais, comme j'ai tendance à utiliser uniquement mon Chromebook, je ne sais pas pour combien de temps Windows restera sur mon ordinateur portable secondaire.

J'adore utiliser Ubuntu et Linux à la place de Windows, mais les problèmes que j'ai rencontrés après une longue absence d'Ubuntu et de l'expérience Linux en général n'ont accompli qu'une seule chose : me montrer comme il peut être simple d'utiliser Linux, si c'est orienté consommateur et convivial, ce que Chrome a réussi avec Chrome OS. Windows est un bon choix pour les personnes qui veulent quelque chose qui fonctionne, mais il est propriétaire et sujet aux virus ; Chrome OS est un bon choix pour les personnes qui veulent quelque chose basé sur Linux qui fonctionne tout simplement, et pour qui vivre dans le nuage importe peu ; Mac OS est un bon choix pour les personnes qui veulent quelque chose qui fonctionne, cependant, comme Windows, il est propriétaire, mais plus généralisé que Linux, tout en étant basé sur *nix, tandis que les systèmes d'exploitation basés sur Linux comme Ubuntu tiennent plus d'OS de passionnés pour qui ce n'est pas un problème de mettre les mains dans le cambouis en utilisant le terminal, et pour qui passer des heures à tout faire fonctionner n'a aucune importance. I really love having a free and Open Source OS on my secondary Laptop, but if I can't get it to do something as simple as burn a DVD video – without the hassle of having to troubleshoot and figure out how to get a missing dependency – then I don't know if I should go back to Ubuntu any-time soon. It’s ok for now – with Windows on my secondary Laptop until I've got the time to figure things out in Ubuntu, or just go for the next best thing when I next have to wipe the slate on my secondary Laptop and start again and dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows, or just attempt a triple boot setup of Windows 10 Technical Preview, Windows 8.1, and Ubuntu.

j'aime vraiment profiter d'un système d'exploitation gratuit et Open Source sur mon ordinateur portable secondaire, mais si je ne peux pas m'en servir pour faire quelque chose d'aussi simple que de graver un DVD - sans le tracas d'avoir à résoudre et comprendre comment satisfaire une dépendance - alors je ne sais pas si je devrais retourner sous Ubuntu dans un futur proche. Cela va bien pour le moment, avec Windows sur mon ordinateur portable secondaire jusqu'à ce que je trouve le temps de résoudre des problèmes sous Ubuntu, ou juste choisir la deuxième meilleure option quand l'occasion de tout recommencer à zéro se présentera et revenir à un dual-boot Ubuntu et Windows, ou juste essayer un triple-boot de la « Technical Preview » de Windows 10, Windows 8.1 et Ubuntu.
