The last article I wrote (FCM#97) was about my dual boot Windows 8.1 Pro / Ubuntu 15.04 laptop and Acer Chromebook setup. Well, since then I’ve moved over to a full time Kubuntu laptop and Acer Chromebook setup with my only Windows computer being my HP Stream 7 Windows 8.1 tablet. After trying out Arch Linux on the laptop, which entailed spending the better half of the afternoon trying to install and configure Arch Linux, it ended up giving me a pounding headache and a broken install. I then decided to give the Netrunner rolling release a try as it’s based on Arch and I really wanted to see what Arch was like as I’ve never tried anything other than OpenSuse, Fedora and Ubuntu. It was a far easier install but still left me with a broken install. I then decided to give Ubuntu Studio 15.04 a try. Although Ubuntu Studio is a very polished OS as a whole, the XFCE desktop doesn’t seem as polished as the other desktop environments. KDE Plasma 5.3 seems to be the most polished of the current desktop environments with Unity coming second and Gnome third.
Le sujet du dernier article que j'ai écrit (dans le FCM n° 97) était mes machines, un portable en double amorçage Windows 8.1 Pro/Ubuntu 15.04 et un Acer Chromebook. Depuis lors, j'ai changé pour un portable sous Kubuntu seul plus l'Acer Chromebook avec, pour seul ordinateur Windows, une tablette HP Stream 7 Windows 8.1.
Après avoir essayé Arch Linux sur le portable, ce qui m'a fait passer plus de la moitié de l'après-midi pour l'installation et la configuration d'Arch Linux et a fini par me donner un mal de crâne violent et une installation cassée ; j'ai alors décidé d'essayer Netrunner avec publication en continu, car c'est basé sur Arch et je voulais vraiment voir à quoi ce dernier ressemble puisque je n'ai jamais essayé autre chose que OpenSuse, Fedora et Ubuntu. L'installation même était beaucoup plus facile, mais m'a quand même laissé avec un système cassé.
Ensuite, j'ai décidé d'essayer Ubuntu Studio 15.04. Bien qu'Ubuntu Studio soit un système d'exploitation globalement élégant, le bureau XFCE ne me semble pas aussi poli que d'autres environnements de bureau. Le plus poli des environnements de bureau actuels semble être KDE Plasma 5.3, avec Unity en seconde place et Gnome en troisième.
But due to some strange glitching of the KDE Desktop, the screen flickers when running on my laptop screen and when connected to my external monitor. I’ll have to see if I can live with this weird glitching of KDE Plasma 5.2 or whether to go back to Ubuntu Studio – the brief time that I was using it I had no issues with the screen. That could be due to the low latency kernel used by Ubuntu 15.04 and the low memory footprint of XFCE compared to KDE. Luckily I’ve got my Acer C720 Chromebook with the Gentoo-based Chrome OS that I can use while I decide what to do with my main Linux laptop, but I’ll probably write another article on my Linux adventure when I decide whether to stick with Kubuntu 15.04 or make the switch to Ubuntu Studio 15.04. But until I decide which way to go, I’ll probably download the Ubuntu Studio 15.04 ISO as I only used a 32GB SD Card to install Ubuntu Studio when I briefly tried it and then re-used it for Kubuntu 15.04. As I want to try to get into YouTube content production and maybe more in the future, then Ubuntu Studio might be a good idea.
Mais, par suite de quelques pépins bizarres dans le Bureau KDE, l'écran scintille sur mon portable ainsi que sur un moniteur externe. Il faut que je voie si je peux accepter cet étrange comportement de KDE Plasma 5.3 ou si je préfère retourner à Ubuntu Studio - pendant le bref laps de temps où je l'utilisais, l'écran n'avait pas de problèmes. Cela pourrait être dû au noyau à latence faible utilisé dans Ubuntu 15.04 et à la faible empreinte mémoire de XFCE comparé à KDE.
Heureusement que j'ai le Chromebook Acer C720, avec Chrome OS, basé sur Gentoo, que je peux utiliser pendant que je décide quoi faire avec mon portable principal sous Linux, mais je vais sans doute écrire un autre article sur mes aventures avec Linux quand j'aurai décidé, soit de rester avec Kubuntu 15.04, soit de changer pour Ubuntu Studio 15.04. Cependant, jusqu'à la prise de cette décision, je vais sans doute télécharger l'ISO d'Ubuntu Studio 15.04, puisque je n'ai utilisé qu'une carte SD de 32 Go pour l'installation d'Ubuntu Studio lors de mon bref essai, puis je l'ai réutilisée pour Kubuntu 15.04.
Puisque je voudrais essayer de me mettre à la production de contenu YouTube et peut-être plus encore par la suite, alors Ubuntu Studio pourrait être une bonne idée.
