-Everyone is familiar with the “download more ram” ram story and it goes to show you how gullible people are. I even remember my woes at a friend’s house when he got a “RAM doubler” for his Windows 95 computer and many people “back in the day” were caught out with these scams. These are all tales we can laugh at with 20/20 vision. (or 2022 vision... OK I’ll see myself out) However, not so long ago, I had a friend who got an ADSL connection, before any of our other friends, and would download like there was no tomorrow. To put it into perspective she would buy hard drives to store her downloads on a quarterly basis. She was computer savvy, or so I thought... I had just installed Warty warthog and was trying my best to get my laptop connected to the internet via my new PCMCIA card, when I got the call. Printer issues. It sounded to me like she was out of ink, but I went to look anyway. It was one of those (then) new inkjet printers, Lexmark, I think, and she was one of those people that installed all the software that came on the CD’s accompanying her stuff. I did a quick test print and only Cyan showed up on the paper. I told her that she was out of ink. This was not possible, she assured me as she got new ink two days ago. Thinking she may have swapped the new and old cartridges, I asked to see the old ones. This is where things went bottom-up. She proceeded to show me how she “bought'' new ink. There was a pop-up from the printer software, saying buy more ink, and she had been clicking the OK button to “download” more... Je me souviens même de mes déboires chez un ami quand il s’est procuré un « doubleur de RAM » pour son ordinateur sous Windows 95 et beaucoup de gens « autrefois » se sont fait escroquer par ces arnaques. Ce sont toutes des histoires qui nous font rire en pleine connaissance de cause. Cependant, il n’y a pas si longtemps que ça, j’avais une amie qui a obtenu une connexion par ADSL avant tous nos autres amis et elle ne se limitait pas dans ses téléchargements. Pour replacer les choses en perspective, elle achetait des disques durs chaque trimestre pour pouvoir stocker ses téléchargements. Il me semblait qu’elle s'y connaissait beaucoup en informatique… Je venais d’installer Warty Warthog et faisais de mon mieux pour connecter mon portable à l’Internet via ma nouvelle carte PCMCIA, quand j’ai reçu son appel. Des problèmes d’imprimante. Mon avis était qu’elle manquait d’encre, mais j’y suis allé jeter un œil quand même. C’était l’une de ces nouvelles (à l’époque) imprimantes à jet d’encre, une Lexmark, je pense, et elle était l’une de ces personnes qui installaient tous les logiciels livrés sur les CD avec ses achats. J’ai fait une rapide impression de test et il n’y avait que Cyan qui se voyait sur le papier. Je lui ai dit qu’il n’y avait plus d’encre. Ce n’était pas possible m’a-t-elle dit, car elle avait reçu de l’encre il y a deux jours. En pensant qu’elle aurait pu échanger les nouvelles et les anciennes cartouches, j’ai demandé à voir les anciennes. C’est alors que j’ai tout compris. Elle m’a montré sa façon d’« acheter » de l’encre. Il y avait un pop-up dans le logiciel de l’imprimante, disant « achetez de l’encre » et elle cliquait sans cesse sur le bouton OK pour en « télécharger » plus.  +A: In the router and AP WiFi settings, turn down the power output to say 40% and test. The issue is that the signal is not weak enough for Kubuntu to switch, so it stays connected. This is good if you don’t want “bloat” in your system, (lots of packages installed for one-time use of one application) Thirdly the back end of snap is proprietary and we as Linux users have come to despise that word as it usually means “sneaky s#!te”. However the proprietary part is not on your computer, but at Canonical and does not affect you at all. I do not think they are inherently evil, think of them like dmg’s on an Apple MAC. The point to having them is you avoid dependency issues and installing lots of packages and are generally considered safer, for if you delete a file in the snap while running, you can simply close and re-open the snap and the files are all created fresh again.

Audio works fine. Après tout,  dans Linux, il s’agit de pouvoir contrôler vos logiciels. Deuxièmement, pour certains programmes, un snap peut être inutilement gros, parce qu’il doit contenir toutes les dépendances de ce programme. Cependant, ce n’est PAS toujours le cas. Par exemple, j’ai Blender en tant que snap : il fait à peu près la même taille et n’installe pas les 100 autres paquets chez moi – ils restent à l’intérieur du snap. C’est très bien si vous ne voulez pas gonfler votre système (beaucoup de paquets sont installés pour la seule utilisation d’une application). Troisièmement, l’infrastructure du snap est propriétaire et nous, les utilisateurs de Linux, détestons ce mot qui, habituellement, signifie « de la m#rde sournoise ». Cela étant dit, la partie propriétaire n’est pas sur votre ordinateur, mais chez Canonical et ne vous affecte en aucune façon.  A: I don’t think Jitsi is to blame, or Ubuntu, for that matter. I suspect kids. That specific model in that picture has a red “privacy shield”.  Q: I have been spoiled with Solus in that I haven’t had to reinstall since day one. I have grown to like it so much that I use Ubuntu Budgie now. With Ubuntu 22.04 on the horizon, I am dreading the reinstall as I always forget SOMETHING. I need Ubuntu as Solus does not have the software we use. What can I do about it, I don’t want to always lag behind. Q: I have been spoiled with Solus in that I haven’t had to reinstall since day one. I have grown to like it so much that I use Ubuntu Budgie now. With Ubuntu 22.04 on the horizon, I am dreading the reinstall as I always forget SOMETHING. Voici la pub. Jusqu’ici, je suis heureux de dire que je n’ai pas eu de mises à jour avec redémarrage forcé ni d’écrans bleus. Pendant mon apprentissage de l’écosystème d’Ubuntu, j’ai décidé d’installer Jitsi. Le problème est que la caméra ne montre rien qu’un brouillard rouge. L’audio fonctionne très bien.  +R : Je ne pense pas que ce soit la faute de Jitsi ou , d’ailleurs, d'Ubuntu. Je soupçonne des gosses. Le modèle précis dans cette image a un « bouclier de protection de votre vie privée » rouge. Si vous regardez autour de votre webcam en haut de l’écran, vous verrez le cercle rouge et vous devez faire glisser ce plastique pour révéler l’objectif en dessous.

Il me plaît tant que j’utilise Ubuntu Budgie actuellement. Avec l’arrivée proche d’Ubuntu 22.04, je redoute la réinstallation car j’oublie toujours QUELQUE CHOSE. J’ai besoin d’Ubuntu, car Solus n’a pas les logiciels que nous utilisons. Que puis-je faire – je ne veux pas être toujours en retard.

 +R : Oui et Non. Cela dépend du portable et des logiciels. Cependant, je pense que vous avez un problème plus sérieux. Si le ventilateur ne tourne pas librement, la friction causera de la chaleur. 'habitude, les ventilateurs de portables n’ont pas de roulement à billes ; ainsi, vous pouvez nettoyer et ré-graisser l'axe. Si vous pouvez vous le permettre, achetez-en un autre dès que possible, car le ventilateur doit enlever la chaleur de la machine, pas y contribuer.

 A: You CAN and you have a pretty good chance of it working too, unlike Windows – I would, however, see how it works first, as drivers are unpredictable. Le problème, c’est qu’il s’agit de modèles et de marques différents et il m'a fallu très longtemps pour configurer la machine exactement comme il me la fallait ; elle n’est qu’un peu sous-puissante, et fait en un jour ce que le i7 de mon chef fait en 2 heures.
