Congratulations to Canonical on the release of Ubuntu 24.04, Noble Numbat, earlier this week. On the back of that there is also a new Ubuntu Unity 24.04. All the details are covered in the following short blog by Rudra Saraswat Ubuntu Unity 24.04 “Noble Numbat” has now been released! You can download it from https://ubuntuunity.org. Ubuntu Unity 24.04 continues to use Unity 7.7, which has undergone maintenance. Our primary focus for this release has been to have a working Lomiri variant in collaboration with the UBports Foundation, to serve as an alternative to Unity7 since we're stuck with X11 for the time-being. This requirement arises from certain dependencies, including Nux – the UI toolkit used for rendering Unity7's user interfaces. UnityX, too, uses Nux unfortunately (since it's a fork of the Unity7 codebase), and so, while it can be made to run under stacking Wayland compositors like Wayfire and labwc, it would continue to rely on X (Xwayland in this case), and so would act only as a stop-gap. Getting around this would mean an entire rewrite, and so, while Unity7 isn't going away anytime soon, Lomiri would act as a suitable replacement if a need ever arose.

Ubuntu Unity 24.04 continue d'utiliser Unity 7.7, qui a fait l'objet d'une maintenance. Notre objectif principal pour cette version était d'avoir une variante Lomiri fonctionnelle en collaboration avec la Fondation UBports, pour servir d'alternative à Unity7 puisque nous sommes coincés avec X11 pour le moment. We've moved over to Calamares as the installer included in the ISO (similar to the Lubuntu and Ubuntu Studio installers on previous releases – if you've ever tried them – which for that matter, you definitely should!). We would like to thank Aaron Rainbolt and Simon Quigley for integrating Calamares with our existing Ubuntu Unity live session. Now speaking of Lomiri, we're aware that for the past few years, a lot of you have been eagerly awaiting Lomiri desktop images. And well, for those of you, we have some thrilling news: the first 24.04 Lomiri testing ISO is now publicly available! Over the past few years, the UBports team (special shout-out, in alphabetical order, to Alfred Neumayer, Marius Gripsgard, and Mike Gabriel!) have been hard at work, improving desktop compatibility and getting every single one of the Lomiri packages into the Debian repositories, and subsequently, they made their way into the Ubuntu repositories too. Following which, we decided it would be a good idea to build an installable, daily-driveable ISO, for your viewing and testing pleasure. Unlike the half-broken testing Lomiri ISOs I have built in the past, this one's quite stable and can be installed on real hardware, while also including the Ubuntu Touch LightDM greeter and for that matter, several apps you'd only expect to find on Ubuntu Touch. Do bear in mind, however, that you may encounter occasional crashes here and there. Volla Tablet The new Volla tablet launched the other week on kickstarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/volla/volla-tablet-simplify-your-digital-life The tablet will be available with both Volla and Ubuntu Touch OS, and with 21 days to go, has nearly doubled the original pledge target. This could be a very popular device, so if you want to get involved take a look at the kickstarter page. Volla Community Days UBports have been invited to attend the next Volla Community Days event in Remschied on the 15-16th of June. The event will be broadcast live via the Volla YouTube channel on both days with a recording available after the event.
Contrairement aux ISO de test de Lomiri à moitié cassées que j'ai construites par le passé, celle-ci est assez stable et peut être installée sur du vrai matériel, tout en incluant l'accueil LightDM d'Ubuntu Touch et, de ce fait, plusieurs applications que l'on ne s'attendrait à trouver que sur Ubuntu Touch. Gardez cependant à l'esprit que vous pouvez rencontrer des plantages occasionnels ici et là.
Tablette Volla
La nouvelle tablette Volla a été lancée la semaine dernière sur kickstarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/volla/volla-tablet-simplify-your-digital-life
La tablette sera disponible avec les deux systèmes d'exploitation Volla et Ubuntu Touch, et à 21 jours de son lancement, elle a presque doublé l'objectif initial de promesses de dons. Cet appareil pourrait être très populaire, alors si vous voulez vous impliquer, jetez un coup d'œil à la page kickstarter.
Journées de la communauté Volla
UBports a été invité à participer à la prochaine édition des Volla Community Days à Remschied les 15 et 16 juin. L'événement sera retransmis en direct sur la chaîne YouTube de Volla pendant les deux jours et un enregistrement sera disponible après l'événement.
Planned events include presentations, demonstrations, interviews,and discussions, and a hackathon running alongside the main event, with a prize being awarded on Sunday afternoon. The new Volla Tablet running Ubuntu Touch is sure to get a showing along with a couple of other items we may be involved in. More details as we get closer to the event. voLTE and 5G Marius showed videos of both voLTE and 5G running on UT devices during Q&A 138. A big step forward but not fully resolved yet. We are now using the proprietary Sailfish ofono binder plugin for voLTE, and more work and testing is needed. Of the two, by way of a sort of happy accident, 5G should be available first, and has been tested on FP5 and 4, but should, in theory, work on devicees with Android 9 and above. Both of the videos show these running on qualcomm but, thanks to Nikita, they are also on meditek. This has been a long journey with many false paths but things are really close now.

voLTE et 5G
Marius a montré des vidéos de voLTE et de 5G fonctionnant sur des appareils UT pendant la séance de questions et réponses 138. Un grand pas en avant, mais pas encore totalement résolu. Nous utilisons maintenant le plugin propriétaire Sailfish ofono binder pour voLTE, et plus de travail et de tests sont nécessaires. Des deux, par une sorte d'heureux hasard, la 5G devrait être disponible en premier et a été testée sur FP5 et 4, mais devrait, en théorie, fonctionner sur les appareils avec Android 9 et plus. Les deux vidéos montrent ces appareils fonctionnant sous qualcomm mais, grâce à Nikita, ils fonctionnent également sous meditek.
Cela a été un long voyage avec beaucoup de fausses pistes mais les choses sont vraiment proches maintenant.
