 A few months back, viruses infected the computer and it became increasingly difficult to use it. The only option was a total reformat and reinstallation of Windows XP (recently orphaned). I was faced with two options, the first being reinstallation of Windows XP, and the more adventurous option of trying a Linux Distro. I was a bit apprehensive about installing Linux because of total lack of knowledge on the subject. I thus decided to play it safe and started off with the 'Run from the CD' distro called OpenSuse 12.2. The result was very discouraging because the computer was very slow and the GUI seemed very primitive.

Le résultat était très décourageant car l'ordinateur était très lent et l'interface graphique semblait très primitive.

 • Getting the mobile broadband mobile to work – this was ultimately solved with the help from the Ubuntu Forum.

 The RAM and the CPU usage is now low (RAM is down to 29%). I actually find Lubuntu to be more interactive and attractive when compared to Windows XP.
-A final word of caution however; installing and getting the distro to run on your particular machine can be difficult, and, in some cases, very frustrating. But the secret is to keep on at it, browse the web, read about other's experiences, and finally fine-tune the distro to your requirements. This effort will pay-off.

+Lubuntu s'est avérée être la distrib. idéale pour mon vieux portable. Maintenant, j'ai complètement supprimé Windows XP et le portable fonctionne uniquement sous Lubuntu. Après l'installation, il y eut quelques problèmes :
+• Faire fonctionner le WiFi, que j'ai finalement résolu avec l'aide du Forum Ubuntu.
+• Installer une imprimante HP, résolu avec l'installation du service d'impression HP.
+Après quelque temps et en prenant mon temps, j'ai installé Cairo Dock et d'autres logiciels que j'avais l'habitude d'utiliser sous Windows. Je trouve que mon portable est stable et vraiment rapide en dépit de la configuration de base du matériel. Tous les logiciels disponibles sous Windows sont aussi disponibles dans la Logithèque Lubuntu, y compris Arduino, Codeblocks, Python, etc... Toutes les applis dans la Logithèque Lubuntu sont bien - j'avais du mal à décider lesquels installer. Toutes les applis fonctionnaient parfaitement sur mon vieux portable.
+L'utilisation de la RAM et du CPU est maintenant basse (la RAM est descendue à 29 %). Je trouve en fait que Lubuntu est plus interactif et plus attrayant que Windows XP.
+Un dernier avertissement cependant : installer et faire fonctionner la distrib. sur votre machine peut être difficile et, dans certains cas, très frustrant. Mais il suffit de persévérer, de parcourir le Web, de prendre connaissance des expériences d'autres personnes et, enfin, de régler minutieusement la distrib. pour qu'elle réponde à vos exigences. Vos efforts se révéleront payants.
