 I actually wanted to try Ubuntu GnuStep 22.04 – but it did not work, so on the same download page at Sourceforge I found this gem. I can say from the onset that it is visually stunning, but that is where the excellence ends. I installed this on my test laptop, not a virtual machine. I replaced Ubuntu Budgie 22.04 that actually worked great.
-Ubuntu Cinnamon ships with Nemo and Thunar, Nemo set as default. Thunar is included for its excellent bulk renaming capabilities, and I honestly prefer Thunar. From the operation side, it all seemed to be in order; however, the laptop had a 160GB, 5400rpm drive, and I knew that opening Firefox would be slow. I was prepared for this and asked my girlfriend if she wanted a quickie, she opted for the full thirty seconds, and afterwards I looked at the screen, still nothing! We played a quick game of Rummy, and made lunch, still waiting. Just as I was about to reboot, Firefox appeared. This was not on. As this was a fresh install, with updates as well, it was odd to see more updates, but I did them too, just to have more after the first restart. Fine, let me search DuckDuckGo for speed-up tips. There was more nothing. I closed and reopened Firefox to see if it would now be faster... It never opened again.

Puisque c’était une installation fraîche, avec des mises à jour aussi, c’était bizarre de voir encore des mises à jour, mais je les ai faites, histoire d’en avoir davantage après le premier redémarrage. Très bien, je vais rechercher des astuces d’accélération sur DuckDuckGo. Il n'y avait encore rien. J’ai fermé et rouvert Firefox pour voir s’il serait plus rapide ... Il ne s’est jamais rouvert.

 I know what, I will uninstall it. Just to find that I could not uninstall many of the pre-installed applications. (This may be due to Gnome in a Snap). If this mildly irritates me, what about the poor kid taking his first steps with Ubuntu?

-The software seemed to be my biggest gripe with something like Lazarus showing 8.6 MB in the Snap store, yes, this distribution ships with 2 software centres - and installing 150MB. To put the cherry on the cake, it did not work, citing a missing executable. So I installed Lazarus IDE from the command-line, to get a “downgrade” message when launching it afterwards, with both being version 2.2.0. Uninstalling the snap store version caused the command-line installed one to work flawlessly. Now imagine what a newbie to Linux would say? This is junk! and promptly go back to Bill Gates’ wallet.

Je ne veux pas parcourir des pages et des pages de polices spaghetti pour en trouver une dont je ne pouvais pas me souvenir du nom, je ne sais pas pour vous ? Par souci de justesse, j'ai essayé l'installation OEM puisque je voulais installer un système et l'envoyer à quelqu'un par courriel, et le problème aurait pu être dû à cela. Comme référence ultérieure, une installation OEM ne doit même pas être envisagée.

Cerise sur le gâteau, il ne fonctionnait pas, à cause d'un exécutable manquant, paraît-il. J'ai donc installé Lazarus IDE à partir de la ligne de commande pour voir un message « rétrograder » quand je l'ai lancé après, les deux étant la version 2.2.0. Quand j'ai désinstallé la version du magasin des snaps, la version que j'avais installée en ligne de commande fonctionnait sans aucun problème. Maintenant, imaginez ce qu'un débutant sous Linux dirait ? C'est de la merde ! et il retournerait tout de suite vers le porte-monnaie de Bill Gates.

Bien que la barre tactile fonctionne, il y avait un délai d'une ou deux secondes, puis une accélération. À nouveau, pas l'idéal, mais pas quelque chose qui me ferait abandonner non plus. Pour mettre cela en perspective, tout ça fonctionnait sans problème sous Ubuntu Budgie 20.4. Puis j'ai essayé de le mettre en veille en fermant le couvercle et cela ne fonctionnait pas non plus. Arrêter ? Non plus. L'écran clignote allumé/éteint. Me déconnecter. Même chose. Un redémarrage a fonctionné. Mais, après avoir bricolé avec les réglages de l'alimentation et forcé la vérification des disques et fait des ajustements, mais il ne fonctionnait toujours pas, s'est gelé et j'ai dû enlever la batterie. (Stabilité, vérifiée...). Après cela, tout semblait fonctionner : redémarrage, me déconnecter, etc. Pour une quelconque raison, j'ai trouvé que apt se plantait même après un redémarrage, que venez-vous de dire ? Je ne sais pas si c'était à cause de la mise à jour automatique, puisque cela s'est produit quatre fois pendant un seul soir, ce qui m'empêchait d'installer des logiciels. Cela étant dit, c'était aussi beaucoup plus lent que l'installation dont j'ai parlé auparavent.

 This brings me to my other issue, my laptop got hot, very hot, and the fan tried its best to cool it for a long time. It did settle eventually when the evening became cool, suddenly the laptop decided to calm down too. Jumping into Mint’s speed-up guide, it also helped to cool down the little dragon breathing fire on my lap. The new Gnome screenshot tool is really cool, I just wish it did not “remember” the last setting when using the PrtSc-key, but I am sure I am just being a noob with this good looking new tool. Though Cinnamon does give you the option to create more panels, it is no match for XFCE in that space, only allowing you to make a picture frame around your desktop, instead of dock-like panels. The plus point is all the applets you can add here, like JIRA and Docker integration. Also, with 160GB of disk space, giving up 11% to an installation is starting to feel like Windows… just putting it out there.

+Snapd était le coupable, je pense pour le processus d'amorçage, en ajoutant davantage de dispositifs en boucle. On pourrait penser que, puisque mon portable a une carte graphique ATI dédiée, le système se déchargerait d'une partie de son travail dessus et ce portable-là devrait être plus rapide que mon autre portable identique, mais sans une carte graphique dédiée..., mais, hélas ! non. Après tout, on était en 2022, pour l'amour de Dieu !).
+Cela m'amène à l'autre problème : le portable est devenu chaud, très chaud, et le ventilateur a fait de son mieux pour le refroidir pendant longtemps. Quand la soirée a apporté de la fraîcheur, tout d'un coup le portable a décidé de se calmer aussi. Quand j'ai sauté dans le guide d'accélération de Mint, cela m'a aidé à rafraîchir le petit dragon respirant le feu sur mes genoux. Le nouvel outil de capture d'écran de Gnome est très chouette, mais j'aimerais qu'il ne se souvienne pas du dernier réglage quand j'ai utilisé la touche « impécr ». Toutefois, je suis certain que c'est tout simplement moi qui débute avec ce bel outil nouveau. Bien que Cinnamon vous donne la possibilité de créer davantage de panneaux, il ne peut pas concurrencer XFCE dans le domaine, car il vous permet seulement de créer un cadre autour de votre bureau, au lieu de panneaux du type dock. Le point positif, c'est tous les applets que vous pouvez ajouter, comme JIRA et l'intégration de Docker. De plus, avec 160 Go d'espace disque, en consacrer 11 % à une installation commence à donner un sentiment de Windows... je le dis, tout simplement.
