And yes, I even heard one young lady scream upon seeing Geoffrey-Allen’s robot. He fondly calls it Geetoo.  A When your only interaction with coworkers is a large monitor stuck to a wall, it's awkward. For example, the video conference software we use allows the host to screen-share or show their local camera, so you lose the video of the conference room and see only their presentation. When this happens, it strips away all the visual cues from the people around the table, and you can't read the feeling in the room. With the robot, I'm sitting in the room with everyone, and I can see that the boss had checked-out and started checking his email. Another time the robot has helped was when I needed to consult on a problem in an office where there wasn't a teleconference node, or web camera, or even a telephone, and the problem was so complex that I just had to see the process so I could devise a solution.

We have good coverage in the areas where I roll around, but the authentication scheme on campus causes the iPad to fall off the network. When that happens, someone has to rescue the robot and reconnect me to the Wifi. After the network issues, I think opening doors, and turning lights on or off, are the only other problems I face on a daily basis. Les interactions avec mes collègues qui n'existaient jamais dans d'autres environnement de télétravail, étaient bel et bien présentes ; je suis invité à des événements liés au travail, à des soirées et à des formations continues auxquelles je n'aurais jamais pu assister sans le robot. J'ai même assisté à une conférence médicale nationale avec l'Institut via mon robot, une chose qui aurait été impossible sans.

+R Le problème que j'appréhendais le plus était l'acceptation ou non du robot par mes collègues. Il s'avère que le problème le plus important auquel je suis confronté est le réseau WiFi sur le campus. La couverture est bonne dans les zones où je roule, mais le schéma d'authentification fait que l'iPad est rayé du réseau. Quand cela arrive, une personne doit secourir le robot et me reconnecter au WiFi. À part ce problème de réseau, je pense qu'ouvrir des portes et allumer ou éteindre les lumières sont les seuls ennuis que j'ai chaque jour. En règle générale, les gens sont très gentils et me tiennent la porte avec plaisir, mais parfois, ils me prennent pour un panneau d'affichage et me dépassent rapidement.

Ainsi, la maintenance quotidienne est simple, bien que des mises à jour de iOS sur l'iPad et les mises à jour du firmware sur le robot nécessitent quelqu'un sur place pour pouvoir appuyer sur la tablette.

The robot's height is adjustable, and in both of these pictures, it is at the lowest setting. This lower setting is the height I normally stay at when moving around, but when I stop to talk to people, I increase the height. It feels more natural for people to talk to me, I think.

 When you log in, the middle of the screen shows the view from the camera on the robot, a view of what is displayed to people talking to the robot, just like most other video chat windows, and a view straight down of the robot’s foot or base. That last view is really helpful when docking in the charger or navigating around chairs and cables in offices. Up top, you can see your controls to disconnect the call, battery status, a button to park the robot, so it doesn't have to balance itself, then other controls to share your local screen on the robot’s iPad, and to take a picture from the robot’s camera.

When I started driving the robot around I found myself reacting to movement with rapid twitch gamer moves, that resulted in some unexpected quick turns, but it did not take long to reprogram my hand-eye coordination.

+R Le temps de réponse est assez bon, mais je ne pense pas que l'on gagnerait une bataille entre robots ; toutefois, pour se déplacer sur le campus, il faut moins d'une seconde, ce qui est très respectable. Quand j'ai commencé à conduire le robot, j'ai vu que mes réactions à ses mouvements étaient trop rapides et saccadées. Il en résultait quelques virages inattendus et rapides, mais j'ai pu reprogrammer ma coordination oculo-manuelle en très peu de temps.

 A Yes it has! I was able to attend a conference in Colorado, even worked shifts in a booth with my coworkers. They gave me a conference badge, and put a tee-shirt on the robot, it was a lot of fun. The response from other attendees was fantastic, I was in a lot of selfies, but most people who stopped to talk to me were very interested in how I used the robot for work.

+Q Ce robot, a-t-il quitté le site ? Si oui, où est-il allé ? Des photos ?
+R Oui ! J'ai pu assister à une conférence au Colorado, et j'ai même fait des quarts de travail sur un stand, avec mes collègues. J'avais un badge de la conférence et ils ont habillé le robot avec un tee-shirt ; c'était très amusant. La réponse des autres gens assistant à la conférence était fantastique ; je figurais dans beaucoup de selfies, mais la plupart des gens qui se sont arrêtés pour me parler étaient très intéressés de savoir comment j'utilisais le robot pour mon travail.
+Je n'étais pas qu'une publicité ambulante, car je dirigeais aussi les comptes rendus sur les réseaux sociaux pour le Research Network. Le robot sait prendre de très bonnes photos, et travailler à la maison m'a permis de les retoucher et afficher sur divers comptes des réseaux sociaux beaucoup plus facilement qu'à partir de mon téléphone ou sur un tabouret instable avec un ordinateur portable sur les genoux.
+Q Comment a-t-il voyagé ?
+R Le robot a une valise personnalisée. Il se démonte assez facilement et je pense qu'il n'y a qu'une seul vis à enlever. Il n'a fallu à mon collègue que cinq minutes pour le démonter et le mettre dans sa valise. À l'arrivée, l'assembler a pris environ le même temps. La valise a pris des avions, roulé à l'arrière d'un van, et fut envoyée une fois par messagerie express.
+Q Que faites-vous à l'Institut ?
+R Mon titre officiel est Responsable des données et j'aide à l'organisation et la maintenance de la  collecte de données, mais, en fait, je travaille principalement comme cowboy des connaissances et ingénieur des données. Je développe des entrepôts de stockage, j'écris du code, je crée l'automatisation des tâches et j'essaie d'aider les chercheurs et les étudiants à découvrir des façons plus efficaces d'assembler, traiter, préserver et disséminer leurs données.
